  • One of our viewers wanted a triple-grafted mango tree, so we thought we would show everyone how to do it! Also known as a cocktail tree, mango trees with multiple varieties grafted on them produce multiple varieties of mangos. It's a great way to maximize a small space and get different kinds of mangos from one tree.
    In this video Chris grafts onto a small 3-gallon potted mango tree. However the same techniques can be applied to larger trees in the ground.
    For more information about our farm and the mangos we grow, check out www.themangopl...

    So kind of you to make the video for the requested tree. It has provided a much needed distraction while waiting for Irma to pass north Miami. The tree has really good structure and it gives me something to look forward to in the future. Thanks! Hoping for the best outcome for all of us...

      Truly Tropical My coconut cream was completely snapped off pretty low to the ground. If any of it survives above the rootstock will be a matter of time -otherwise I'll be requesting another cocktail!

      Hi Chris, how is the cocktail tree? When do you think it will be ready for me to pick up? No hurry- just looking forward to planting it. Irma snapped my coconut cream off at ground level so I have a vacant spot. Happy holidays!

      We do a lot of grafting in early fall, but the best time to graft depends on what kind of graft you're using and what kind of facility you have. Spring is usually a good time.

      @@TrulyTropical Thanks mam. I'v done six graftings on mango tree and hibiscus in this month i.e. March in India ( temperature is about 20 degree Celsius) & got success four out of six. Has any probability for the unsuccessful remaining two ?

    Have you ever used a Choc Anon mango tree as the mother tree for grafting? If so did the grafted varieties flush and fruit more often?

    • @TrulyTropical

    Cocktail mango trees need regular pruning to keep a balance between the different varieties. Without regular pruning, within a year or two some grafts invariably grow much faster than others, capturing more light and inhibiting growth of the less vigorous grafts. Grafting is the easy part - maintaining the balance demonstrates good horticulture.

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, monitoring and pruning to balance are important steps. It's a lot easier when the growth rates are similar.

    Chris, for the first graft (at 7:28 sweet tart). after the graft took, do you cut off the top portion pineapple pleasure branch ?

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  7 лет назад +1

      Yes. We will show a final video on that plant. That project is taking much longer than it normally would because of the distraction of Hurricane Irma.

    • @zatara5299
      @zatara5299 7 лет назад

      is this method better than a wedge graft where the top portion is cut off?

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  7 лет назад +3

      For many years I used a top cleft graft. Now I almost always used a side cleft graft. My success rate has improved significantly.

    when remove the grafting tape in tree

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  6 лет назад +1

      When using Buddy Tape and grafting elastics, the sun will degrade them so there's no need to remove.
      When using grafting tape, wait until at least one growth flush has mature leaves before removing.

    • @TrulyTropical

      One was successful and the other was not ...because Hurricane Irma diverted our attention and energies. Basically the plants in containers were neglected when we cleaned up the damage etc.

    Do you get true cultivar fruits this way? I mean what if flowers of one breed is fertilized by pollen of another, given how close they are located. This should result in lots of cross-pollinated fruits.
    Please share your findings. I didn't find an answer anywhere. I want a cocktail tree of 2 breeds but want to avoid cocktail fruits. Thanks.

    • @jasonjayalap
      @jasonjayalap 2 года назад +2

      Seeds are the result of pollination, but fruit is the result of the parent's genetics.

      It depends on the weather. Right now I'm not grafting potted plants because of the cold snaps that we're getting. If we have mild weather after this next cold snap and my grafts were successful, the new growth from those grafts would be vulnerable.
