Watch him do this on Rick Beato’s channel. H discusses why he changes the string tuning then transcribes it into D. Gives him stronger bass notes and better chord inversions. Absolutely a master of his guitar. And his finger style gives it a whole different feel.
Mike Dawes is very well known among Moody Blues/Justin Hayward fans. We've been blown away by his playing since he started touring with Justin several years ago. The guy is phenomenal!! I've been fortunate enough to see him live on 12 occasions and he just gets better and better. Thank you so much for sharing this, Doug. I'm so glad you featured it because Mike deserves to have a much wider audience. He's done solo albums that are well worth hearing and buying too!
Mike is just a treasure within the guitar community and his tribute to Eddie was so very heartfelt (and appreciated). Check out Mike's version of John Mayer's "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" for another treat.
Doug during that listen through, especially in the second half, you look like a kid discovering rock and roll for the first time and just in awe. The ability of music to elicit such joyus and giddy emotions in people is an incredible and invaluable quality. I have no doubt that your genuine enthusiasm and energy will be infectious, leading many who watch to perhaps delve into Van Halen for the first time, or to discover Mike Dawes' excellent music. Keep up the hard work and the sincere, genuine love of music and the power it has! EDIT: Also, love the technical analysis, breakdown, and personal stories. They are what make you a great content maker instead of just some youtube chanel.
Edward had that ability like all great composers to make music that sounds both simple and elegant, and then you go to learn how to play it, and you realize how much stuff is going on in there. It's alchemy. Lots of love for Mike and this style of guitar playing too, and his tone is gorgeous. Clearly I need to find more time to play, these younger guitarists are amazing. Thanks for the video.
I'm a friend of Mike's, and I can tell you that he's as genuine and cool as he is talented- which is saying a lot! I urge you to check out his original work= he''s simply incredible!
I cry every single time I hear this arrangement. So wonderfully played. At 65, Mike has really inspired me to work hard at my fingerstyle. I've been away from the guitar for 40 years. I recently purchased an acoustic 12 string and an acoustic electric 6 string along with a practice amp and some pedals... SO much to learn, so little time...
@@bidyutdatta5042 yup. I practice daily for as long as my fingers will allow, multiple times a day. I do it on both my 6 and my 12 string. Slo and steady, trying to get perfect before fast... My first go around when I was in my early 20s, I did not focus on fundamentals. Even today, that muscle memory remains and requires retraining for proper technique.
Heard this when it was released, and it really is the ultimate tribute. So warm, such a celebration in his own words(so to speak), and even more fitting given Eddie's love of tone. It is an exultation of the man's life and contribution to music. Mike did a great job.
When Mike put this performance up as a tribute shortly after Eddie Van Halen passed, it was my favorite tribute. His son Wolfgang released a song with a video montage that made me tear up for different reasons, but it was Mike Dawes Jump tribute that made cry smiling, because you have an acoustic player who's genre is so very different showing the reach of the influence through this incredible arrangement.
Awesome Video Doug.I really enjoyed Mikes guitar playing on Jump.I have always been a Van Halen fan.I enjoy watching you get in to the music.Keep up the Great work Doug.RIP Eddie Van Halen.
A true virtuoso who has not only mastered the instrument, he has mastered all the modern day tech gear needed to pull off a performance like that. He integrated the science in with the art flawlessly. Well played indeed.
honestly speaking... your reaction is the kind of reaction that i like... and as for mike, i always listen to travis meeks and mike dawes. these two gets me hyped every single day
Thank you for doing this video. That was truly amazing. Kudos to Mike Dawes!!! That was just so inventive, well though out and all around beautifully played. Thanks again Doug and thanks to Mike. Definitely a nice little gift.
Doug, all I was able to keep thinking while you enjoyed this was 'This is how one reacts to Mike Dawes.' No nonsense, the appropriate amount of awe, joy, and respect ... all reinforced by your own masterful understanding of music. Good stuff man.
fantastic video about a fantastic cover of a fantastic song by a fantastic man...have you reacted to any other Van Halen stuff????? If not PLEASE DO...I'm searching right now...WELL DONE, Sir!
If you think Mike Dawes is amazing and you haven't heard him cover Somebody That I Used to Know prepare to have your mind blown. Hoping to see him with Justin Hayward again, they were terrific together.
He is simply unbelievable ! My happiness knew no bounds when I learnt that he accompanied one of my most favourite bands Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward on his solo tour.

Oh wasn't expecting this! Mike is one of the absolute best fingerstyle players ever. Such an awesome arrangement. I've slowly been trying to figure it out but not easy! Tuning is DADGAD
I agree Doug. I have listened to several songs played by Mike Dawes now and he takes Acoustic Guitar playing to a whole new elevated level. Sad to hear that guitar legend EVH has passed away. RIP.
When Ed passed I watched hundreds of tribute type videos and to be honest Mike's rendition of Jump is hands down the most sincere and beautiful masterpiece for a tribute to VH. Not knocking anyone elses work or video tributes but this piece is absolutely perfect... jus my opinion..😉
I love how happy this made you feel. Put the biggest smile on my face. I also loved when you accompanied him on the piano. Would love to see you make a video playing along with him.
Been following mike for years. Such a pleasure all over when he plays, and whatever he plays. Not sure if you know about the community/youtube-channel called "candyrat", but they have all these insane guitarplayers collected up there.
Tommy Emmanuel is someone l think is the best I've ever seen who incorporates several voices at once, it's worth checking out his version of while my guitar gently weeps.
Tommy is amazing i agree but mike dawes in my humble opinion is on a different level . Its guitar evolution , same as comparing hendrix to SRV and mayer.
Elle403 After watching a few more videos l kind of agree with you. He does use the whole of the guitar front back sides of the body, many fret techniques, under neck sounds and I've noticed some Spanish styles incorporated as well as advanced playing position and techniques. He did play with Tommy Emmanuel a while ago so l will look at that later.
Hi Doug - I don't know where you're doing these latest videos from, but that room has a GORGEOUS natural reverb to it (especially with headphones on)...and that piano was so stunning in that room when you started playing along with Nightwish in the last video...SOO good - 1970s Kansas immediately came to mind from what you were playing.
This is magnificent! Thanks so much for sharing it! I can’t believe it’s taken this track to remind me, but you should check out some Rodrigo y Gabriella when you have time. They do some superb things with a pair of classical acoustic guitars!
Not sure if i enjoyed that more for the musicianship or your pure enjoyment and appreciation of it. I was never really a fan of Van Halen but that was impressive and beautiful.
Amazing rendition. What confused me was trying to figure out how he videographed it. Many of the hand movements looked sped up, but it didn't sound particularly sped up. Minor detail but got me intrigued, maybe the framerate or just the replay here? Really fascinating that he managed to put everything together in one solo track including percussions. I must have heard the name or seen Mike Dawes before. Makes me think of Petteri Sariola's Prime that I saw as a teenager and never saw guitar the same way again.
Mike Dawes plays with and opens for Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues solo tour. I saw Mike live in June. He is amazing. A very engaging fellow and a brilliant guitarist.
One of the greatest ways we can honor music and its creators is to take a piece and make it our own. No matter the skill level, even if it is just for you, keep playing, keep singing, keep writing, and you will be richer for it.
Thanks so much for the nice words Doug! Really appreciate your time and support. RIP EVH ❤️
You’re welcome! Great playing!
@@Doug.Helvering You're a master, thank you.
Mike you absolutely floor me. Carry on brother, carry on!!
I see Eddy smiling while you’re playing this.
Thanks to you and to Doug for sharing this.
I've just become acquainted with your work Mike. Simply superb! Thanks for honouring such a great legend like Van Halen with an astonishing version
