To be abandoned? Final months of train BO-1 to Rousselot, Peabody, MA - 4/13/2023
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 сен 2024
- With the impending closure of the Rousselot Plant on the S. Reading Industrial Track in Peabody, MA I made another effort to capture the train BO-1's normal operations on the line. With the closure date estimated to be in June or July approaching I decided to get a few different shots than I got in the previous chase for better historical documentation. Given the various factors like no other customers, rumors about redevelopment of the plant property, and history of other closed lines it could easily become a bike path making this train's last days extremely significant, enough so that I spent the day filming again. This video starts in Salem, MA and chases the train to/from Rousselot and ends at the Swampscott MBTA Train Station.

Thank you for the coverage on an obscure line like this in it's death throes. To think of how New England's railroads have retrenched in the last 50 years it's getting hard to find any Industries still using rail. This line is reminiscent of some the Northwestern ran in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin with numerous small Industries and some paper mills. Last Autumn went by an area and felt something was missing and it was one of the bigger paper mills completely leveled and now they build condos on the site including where the tracks went. Sad to see it in this condition but at least your footage preserves it for history
Thanks for watching!
it is not that industry does not use railroads or any other mode of transportation, it's the fact there is no industry................thank the government and especially democrats for their tax, regulations, and myths. there is a reason industry is in China, Mexico, and other nations, low wages, taxes, and regulations. but in this nation, you pay as much as if the product was produced here. Just listened to a report regarding overtime regulations placed on farmers in Washington State. Democrats pushed through laws forcing vegetable farmers to pay overtime to workers, prior that the workers were making an above-average salary, today, that same farm worker is taking on a second job because the farms are now working through a labor pool, Democrats are the root cause of the industrial decline and inflationary costs.
You can thank the democrats for that high taxes and assine regulations drove industries overseas not to mention bill Clinton and nafta !😡
So sad to see any railroad come to an end. So far the train we have up here comes through our small town in Michigan. Mainly for hauling logs and for storing cars during the winter on the rails. I’m so glad people like you take the time to videotape the last days of this train running.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for recording this. At one point the city of Peabody was trying to attract more business to their industrial park further down the now dormant line. I wonder how much longer customers will last in Chelsea and Everett, would be a good video to see. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching!
Chelsea and Everett aren't going anywhere.
? Why would it be destroyed. Rail roads are neat and help move goods. Govt. Might hurt rail from working properly.

Nice video, Thanks
Very sad, In the 70s there were 12-15 Businesses on that part of the line and up to 30+ cars !! And the small yard at North St. had about six long tracks and always a Switcher working and as you know the Engine house tracks were at the wye (Parking lot now) and Tunnel. I grew up in East Boston & Lynn in the 1960s -70s and Railfanned the many Boston and Salem switcher moves and freights over this area (Everett, Chelsea, Lynn, Salem, Peabody, Beaverly, Danvers, Danversport, Lynnfield, Wakefield also to Ipswich, Topsfield, Newburyport & Gloucester) from 1974' to the late 1990s Started with mt late Father in the late 1960s getting an Ice Cream with him in Salem and driving to the B&M Castle Hill yard there an watch the many Switching & Freight moves for an hour or so at that very busy yard then, many industries back then into the 70s !! My Grandfather worked for the B&M from 1923' to 1958' it was a Hard job in those days my Father went into different work but we still took great interest in the RR. Later in the mid 70s my older Brother and I started Railfanning. I always Love the New England Branch lines in Towns & Cities !! I lived in Exeter, NH for the last 28 yrs now, my Apt building is right on the Tracks just 60 ft away and I moved here to see every train daily Lol. Well I'm just glad I have my B&M/Guil memories especially of the B&M GP7/9/18/38s , F units all the NW/SW types and Alco RS-3/ S-Types . It's almost all gone now, I'm 65' now 👍
Thanks for watching! It’s sad to see how much has disappeared over the years.
@@SouthCoastRailVideos Yes it is, now it's just the same old CSX GE/EMD Wide-Cab computer on the mainline out my widow and if I see a GP38/40 or SD40 it's a good day Lol. Thankfully there are still about 20 Pan Am painted units with a few PAR SD40's left !!
Thank you for doing this. Mass doesn’t have a lot of major freight railroading left and railfanning sucks here. Sad to see this one go
Thanks for watching!
I grew up in a house that was short walk down to the Grove St. crossing. I took some pictures for my last album (I'm a musician) on those tracks. I remember going to school and seeing them almost every day in the Salem yard. Now it's down to Tuesdays and Thursday's. Sorry to see them go...
Thanks for watching
Grove Street is listed as a station in my century old timetable.
@@interstellarphred I feel like a got one of those somewhere too.
How depressing. I'd say "it's a highly urban area! It should be repurposed for light rail!" but, unfortunately, the line doesn't really go anywhere. Even the abandoned section where the ROW is still mostly intact peters out in a condo park a few miles south in Lynnfield. Still, it's a shame - I never want to see any freight operation close, especially one in New England (where they are hard to come by at the best of times).
Thanks for watching
I worked for Guilford in Maine several years ago. I hated seeing traffic decline and lines essentially abandoned.
Thanks for watching
Excellent capture. And with (finally) money being put into rail infrastructure, I find it odd that more effort wouldn't be put into taking advantage of something that is already in service.
Thank you! The last customer on the line is closing so realistically this is it.
Very good point. Peace
Great video! I live about four blocks from Salem station, so this was fun to see.
Looks like a ex cn rail gp38 dash 2 comfort cab unit😊

Fly high…. The Rail line that got me into fright rail fanning. The stories my parents told me about how floods used to lift up the cars off the rails and my grandfather telling me he used to climb on the cars during his childhood O_O. I don’t think I’ve heard the bells of the railroad crossing signal in person but definitely loved watching the cars getting parked in several instances.

Like so much the picture at the begining. Pure joy for model railroader. Urban location with buildings, plenty of cars and trucks on roads just above tunnel with track below surrounding ground. Track signal with "Atlas" tower with window shades at different height already in. A modeler paradise that scene but not for tofay railroading. Not enough graffitis everywhere. In modern urban decay it should be covered (sadly) !!
Good catch

When grandparents lived in Danvers, my father and I would got Salem and photograph the operations in that area.

😭😭😭 thanks for documenting the last days for us. I still remember watching trains on the Clearwater line in Florida through holiday and new port richey as a kid. I wish there was some video of that ❤

great train video bro
Thanks for watching!
I completely understand this channel is about trains but I have a childhood memory playing around this track and the white building you were standing next to filming at. I remember saying to myself at that young age how close that building was to that track. Your video just strangely appeared on my feed and it gave me a strange feeling so I had to check it out. My aunt lived in Peabody until here death. Many memories of that area and the Salem Willows Park. What I wouldn't give for a box of peanut butter kisses from E.W. Hobbs! Sucks living in Colorado sort of. All the good food is back east.
Thanks for watching! It’s always nice to hear someone having a connection to the area filmed that invoked memories.
google knows everything about you, and the youtube app on your phone listens to our conversations! Have a conversation about something that you would never talk about and see what shows up on your feed?
Superb video!
Thank you!
It's amazing to see the train going right down the middle of the downtown and I wonder what used to be there
There must have been a train station and a Depot maybe some ware houses and businesses that used the trains
All long gone now. Are there old photos of the area from back then ?

That is just a damn'd shame! Progress my ass! Maybe there's a chance that this line and these men's jobs will be saved...

I drive and walk past the tracks at Peabody Square almost every day with hopes that I would see a train go by just once, and today I finally saw a train go by. So sad to hear that the tracks will go out of service soon. I've been taking walks along the old rail lines all over the Peabody/Danvers area just to imagine what it was like in the old days when train travel was popular.
Thanks for watching
Love the old style crossbuck at the plant. A railfanner should try and get that before someone steals it. Only one of those I see anymore is on a post in someone's front yard near Genoa OH.
Thanks for watching
Great one again. love your layout, A complete tour would be fun
What?
Boy that train crosses EVERYTHING...Yeah, I tell everyone that if you have a small business that take rail you should video that right away. Things are changing all the time. There is rail growth resurgence happening. But there is more pressure on the small businesses as railroads seek to get more train to fewer destinations. This cycle will eventually end but how long that will take and how many more operations like this jewel here will disappear? Who Knows?
Thanks for watching!
Always sad. When I was a boy a local freight shunted the local lime mills but then CN decided to cut off the local for a yard run. it changed everything.

I was tracing back some abandoned rail lines that either PRR or Conrail closed. I found one town barely holding it together where at one time there was a large grain facility and sawmill. There was a doctor's office and probably a pharmacy. They are down to an antique store and General Dollars. It still has its own company but the damage was done. Thank you for sharing the sadness. I get sad, too. because I know what happens.
It would be nice to see if CSX could drum up something before the tracks get ripped up. I doubt it’d occur before Rousselot closes but they seem to be a more willing business partner with smaller industries than Pan Am was, so who knows what might happen.
Maybe, the line does continue past the plant but is overgrown and OOS. Perhaps there’s some real estate in that direction for new business.
There is some industrial development at 1st avenue/2nd street. I wouldn’t make any final claims about permanent ends of potential freight until the tracks are ripped up and the ROW is sold. We only know so much.
I was under the impression that most of the real estate along the tracks is industrial space, if not zoned for industrial. I doubt that unless one of the current abutters wants to cough up cash for rail service it’d go anywhere, but who knows if others might show up at some point. Not us, that’s for sure.
@@djldrumsKeep it active? Certainly no reason to keep it running after Rousselot closes. Keep it in place? That I find more likely. No obligation to run down the line but no full reason to abscond of it. I think railroads like St. Lawrence and Altantic with the southern end of their Berlin Sub had a similar approach.
CSX will have a chubby while ripping up the tracks. It's been their favorite pastime since the SCL days. Many ACL branches were abandoned or sold in segments from the 70's-early 80's, they abandoned huge sections of the S Line in the mid 80's, and sold off the Tallahassee Sub in 2019. Plus, with PSR, they've shuttered operations at many yards. Some abandoned, and sold outright. These smaller branch lines don't fit in with their PSR b.s. Realistically, if it wasn't for Amtrak Silver Star, CSX would surely either abandon or sell the S Line (Hamlet Sub) from Hamlet, NC to Cayce, SC.
What was that at 4:00 sounded like a supercharged Bumblebee LOL
Haha, sped up video
@South Coast Rail Videos Yeah I know...Just made me laugh when I heard it....
Really nice paint scheme on those locos. Black with red stripe.
Thanks for watching
Actually--- dark gray, with an orange stripe.
How many Guilford family line locomotives are still left in operation? I’m very curious.
There’s a few but unfortunately I don’t know the exact number
Guilford painted locos left on the roster are MEC 305
MEC 306
MEC 315
MEC 316
MEC 319
MEC 321 out of service at Waterville
B&M 330 out of service at Waterville
MEC 351
MEC 353
MEC 507
MEC 509
MEC 510
MEC 514
As of the otherday 350 351 & 353 were placed OOS at Waterville. Supposedly 306 might be done for good too I saw a comment on Facebook about it yesterday 5/1. It was leading on M426 headed to Waterville..not sure what may be wrong with it tho.
Very interesting shunting puzzle here.

Does this section have derailment from time to time? Seems like the buildings are growing over the line. Good you got it while still Rollin and rocking 😢.

By chance was there some kind of rails to trails initiative going on? I am seeing that in many places.
Not sure
4:09 look at the bridge flex under that weight its needs to be supported a lot more tbh
Not for long
Track quality seemingly not an issue 😮
Thanks for watching
Actually, they are an issue. There's even worse out there. A lot of track in the USA is in poor shape. More likely to lead to derailments, track failures and reduce efficiency. hence, the loco has to go even slower. Look at Euro and Asian rail tracks, and they're very straight. We don't have high-speed rail. We don't have good service for cargo and passengers. USA has the most dangerous rail in the world. For the trains themselves, passengers and road accidents. 24m55s is a good spot to show how wonky that track is. Again, there's YT vids with tracks far far worse.
I still love trains thou.
And good footage on this video.
3:45 how can a track in such a poor condition be still in service? I've seen tracks abandoned for more than 2 decades which are still in better shape than that!
The zoom exaggerates the condition

Shame the MBTA has zero interest in restoring passenger services to Peabody or Danvers
There is some interest on the Danvers track but it has only gotten as far as a study.
Doing some advocacy a few years back, I caught the ear of some MPO members, and the "T" actually held a public reach out about creating a branch operation to Rt. 128 to establish a park and ride. It was quite a positive reception (in Peabody at least) compared to the usual NIMBY fusillades I have witnessed. The GM actually used my term "interceptor" at some of the public forums. So guys, get out from behind your telephoto cameras, and show up at meetings. Three letters to a state legislator is a big thing. This cycle commuter considers trail conversion a failure of public policy, given these lines were acquired by the Commonwealth to expand rail transit in the wake of the I95 cancellation.
Are theses the Salam tracks to the ones that go to newbury or rockport.
No, these go Salem to Peabody

why is hte plant closing?
The company that owns it listed economic reasons and there were some lawsuits about the smell of the factory.
@@SouthCoastRailVideos they can sue them for smell? this facotry has had to been their for decades
You can sue for anything, just doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll win.
@@SouthCoastRailVideos we have a cocnrete plant nearby and they like to burn tires and junk as a fuel source. covers the entire city with dust and obivously it stinks. i assume theirs nothing we can do about it lol
One can sue over smells. The Sriracha plant in California almost closed because his neighbors could not stand the smell.
This is called PROGRESS. Not.
It is unfortunate but it was the customer’s decision
Rails to trails is great thing, at least that still gets some use out of the old railbed. Here in Wisconsin we have a bunch of old railroads that are now state trails.
Deferred maintenance
@@eringardner4962. Railroads maintain track to profitably meet the service requirements of the customers. Looking at the consist of the manifest train, it’s all bulk material which generally is not time sensitive so minimal maintenance is all that is needed to maintain a dependable service that is acceptable to the customer. The capacity of the cars means the track will handle 100 tons; why would a railroad spend maintenance money on a branch line for one customer if it would mean operating it at a loss? You do remember that railroads are in business to make a profit, don’t you? Railfans need to wake up and look at the business so they can get a better picture of why things happen the way they do on a railroad.

Why is a "railway" company littering, ? by abandoning its unwanted machinery on sections of track that no one bothers to maintain ???????
Littering? What machinery are they abandoning? The train won’t be abandoned, just the line.
