"Nowhere does the game tell you how to make bomb bridges!" God, when did people stop bothering to talk to NPCs? Sirius tells you how to do it in the first freaking level. The whole thing is a giant tutorial.
Okay, first of all many of us were like 6 when this game came out, chill. Second, the game never requires you to build any complex bridges to beat the game, simply one to two jump sections so the more difficult stuff to find requires some ingenuity that most kids probably don’t think of.
Lol people not talking to every NPC is crazy weird. Especially in the 90s when even NPCs existing as plot devices became way more of a thing than ever before.
Yeah, I was surprised he said that the soundtrack was forgettable. I played the game a shit-ton too and even twenty-ish years later I can hum about 80% of the soundtrack. The miniboss music, "Masker", is a freaking classic.

Oh man, this was one of my favorite games growing up and I had no idea there was a “true” ending. I hope to finish the Bomberman 64 the Second Attack some day.
Hero is definitely a step down in my eyes but it seems to be the favorite of most people so I still say give it a shot if you have an N64 (the game itself is very cheap to purchase). As for The Second Attack, I've never played it myself and it looks like I'm never going to be able to since the physical cart alone costs over $100 online.
Hey! Bomberman 64 had some great music IMO. Blue Resort, Altair 1 & 2, & White Glacier to name a few. Though, Completeing this game back in the day SUCKED if you didn't have a memory pack.
I never finished this game as a child. You mentioned the secret true boss and didn't explain it. The one thing I wanted to know wasn't included. Great review but now I must search for another video.
Since two of my favorite video game characters (Mimi and Nyami from Pop'n Music) got introduced into Super Bomberman R recently, having never played a Bomberman game before, I decided to look into this video. Bless your heart, but also thanks for telling us to attempt to pick up the original release instead of the Wii U version!
I see Bomberman 64 the second attack in the background. Why does nobody talk about this game? It is one of my favorites to this day. It was excellent back then and in my opinion holds up really well today. It is far from perfect but I am sick of it living in the shadow of the incredibly inferior Bomberman 64.
I think that's going to change soon hopefully, same with Hero, even Bomberman 64 isn't talked about all that much really. Only downside is that once it gets "discovered" the price will go up even more, get it while you still can.
It's probably because, like the other bomberman games, it doesn't hold up very well in general (and the 2D bomberman games tend to age better in comparison). It's ok, but I got it when it was cheaper than it is now and was still very underwhelmed. I think these games were a bit niche at the time and more so now. I traded my copy not long after getting it, maybe it's just not my thing. Can't imagine paying what it goes for now.
Bomberman 64 and Hero have aged visually, but not as much in TSA Saturn Bomberman is great, it's easily one of the best Bombermn games. The N64 games had more experimentation and variety, though obviously there is some age to them with inconsistent framerate, but that's to be expected on N64
The only thing that frustrated me as a kid with second attack is that pommy couldn't help with boss battles so your player 2 had to basically sit there and watch. It was really bad in the final boss battles because it ended up being an hour of your friend or family watching you try to win.
Wow this video just jarred a memory loose. I definitely played Bomberman 2 on the original Gameboy. It’s so strange forgetting I played an entire game and then have it all come rushing back. Thanks.
My memory of this also includes Blockbuster video. We had a sleepover at a buddy’s house. We rented this and we were stoked to it. My buddy fell asleep with controller in hand while we were attempting the co op section. Fast forward twenty years. The same dude stays at my house. We played some co op Gears 4. Fell asleep again the same way.
HEY! Does anyone remember Bomberman 64: The Second Attack!? LOOK IT UP It exists!(and is incredibly expensive these days) Also, BTW, Bomberman Hero is a nightmare to complete. At least for me it was.EDIT: HEY Jirard has Second attack! ^^!
Yeah, Goemon's Great Adventure was one of my favorite platformers for the N64. Jirard should definitely do a review of the N64 Goemon games so they have more public exposure. I was ticked off that so many games in the franchise are exclusive to Japan.
@@wyn9693 I'm not on Jirard's level and I didn't have too hard a time with it. I will say the hardcore platforming took an extreme amount of patients. That was hell.
@@DevilGiga except the Godmaster dlc was disappointing. Basically boss rush mode and extra hard boss battles (including 1 hit deaths). I gave up there at 107% complete.
Man, when we played this as kids, we LOVED the multiplayer. What was unique is that, even after you die, you stay on the field as a "ghost" that can latch onto someone still in the game and take control of his/her movements. So even though you are out of winning, you don't actually stop playing... and can get some sweet, sweet revenge on your older brother who just knocked you out. Mwahahaha!
Another episode without a visit to Skull Island, huh? I'm glad that, as bad as the destruction of nostalgia can be sometimes, nothing about this classic treated you outright unfairly. Thanks for the video, Jirard, and I'll be looking forward to the next one!
This brought me back. Thank you for reminding me how much a pain this game was. And how my friends and I would punch each other out of anger upon getting killed in multiplayer.
Nice to see you didn't lose that copy of Bomberman 64: The Second Attack that I sent you some years back. Those are hard to find and the game hasn't been rereleased digitally, and may never be. I know Bradley loves that game too, so now that you've done this, he and I are both counting down the minutes to when you complete that.
To be completely honest, you're better off playing the sequel, Bomberman 64: The Second Attack. The story mode has more diverse level designs; a better narrative; more bomb weapons; armor upgrades; an upgradeable second player character; and much more manageable puzzles. There are far fewer instances of having to use overly complex bomb bridges or bomb ladders to find hidden items as I recall. Having to collect all gold cards at once in a stage under a time limit is utterly asinine. Regarding multiplayer mode, The Second Attack has more match types, but I personally found the circular bomb explosions in the first game to be harder to avoid in multiplayer mode and it therefore felt more frantic and fun to me.
I will always be peeved at that one because of the hidden pet evolutions. They are just so much better than all of the others and you'd never find them accidentally. Otherwise it's okay.
2:31 O M F G I PLAYED THAT!!! There was a really small retro gaming convention, where people could display their own games and stuff. Sirius tells you about bomb bridges in-game, even including pictures. The bad ending also displays some useful ones. Still, it is certainly frustrating and challenging. You do not forget those bosses, for a spectrum of reasons. At least the tiled surfaces, 8-direction limit to movement, easy-to-use camera, and tiered toss distances make bridges and combat a matter of measurement to some degree. After having played Super Mario 64, that had been a huge relief.
Great video! Bomb bridges are actually one of my favorite parts of the game, and figuring out some of the Rainbow Palace puzzles felt incredibly satisfying. Interesting to hear people didn't enjoy it as much haha
Sorry, man, but I simply cannot agree with your opinion about the music. My family rented Bomberman 64 once in 1999 when I was 8 years old. Even after returning the game after our rental period was up, I was still whistling tunes like Green Garden, Blue Resort, the boss battle theme and multiplayer battle theme all the way until I got my own copy of the game in 2017 at age 16. It is, to date, my favorite Bomberman OST followed closely behind by Bomberman Tournament. Oh and, before anyone comes in here with that "Dur hur hur you got it confused with Bomberman Hero, bruh" crap that I've seen so many times in this very comment section, no. In fact, for the longest time, I thought Bomberman Hero as a game was gutter trash and didn't bother remembering any music from it with the exception of the File Select theme (which is just the theme from the original Bomberman so... yeah). A couple of years back, I replayed the game from start to finish and got more of an appreciation for it though I still don't think Hero, the game or the music (including Redial), comes close to 64.
The game does teach you how to make bomb bridges, but only if you beat the game without all of the gold cards. Two of the gameplay scenes during the credits demonstrate how to make bomb bridges, but those are replaced by other scenes in the true ending. This is the only reason I ever knew how to do it back in the day.
I SEE THAT BOMBERMAN 64 THE SECOND ATTACK IN THE BACKGROUND! One of my absolute favorite games on the entire console. So much more polished than the first game.
Tons of nostalgia for this one as it was one of the very first games me and my brothers got for the N64. Played it a lot. And I actually really like the music. It's simple, but catchy. I especially LOVE the credits music, gets stuck in my head all the time.
BRUH I 100% completed this game years ago as a teenager, having revisited it years after "beating it" as a kid. My mind was blown looking at nearly how much I missed as a kid.
"Music is just okay" he says. XD As a non-Nintendo fan who loves video game music, this game has some of the best music I've heard in a while. "Blue Resort" is a wondrously good track. It's actually what made me curious to check out this episode of your show. Cause I had no idea what this game looked like.
Glad you beat BomberMan 64, I absolutely loved this game as a kid. Wish I could have helped, if you ever want to play it on the N64 with the costumes I still have my completed copy. I saw you guys talking about best N64 games and could only think of this game.
I think the first time the game "tells" you about bomb bridges is during the incomplete ending credits. Lots of little gameplay snippets in there of bridges being made and used, and I remember my mind being blown as a kid when I realized just what the possibilities were.
Yes yes yes yes one of my favorite games of all time. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing it will almost bring me to tears hearing it....I wish this is what Bomberman R could’ve been for the switch
Loved this game when I was a kid. I got it for my birthday, I had asked for Super Mario 64 but got Bomberman 64 instead, and honestly, it wasn't a bad trade off. Though yeah, there are rough points in the game, I remember one particular boss fight on a raft that if you didn't have an extra heart and bomb upgrades, you were in for a rough fight.
Ah my first bomber man game, never reached the 120 gold card mark but I did love the 3D adventure it provided along with the fun multiplayer where if you stun someone, you can just throw them to their doom.
First off, while I can't say anything about the instruction manual since I originally borrowed it from a friend when I was little, the tutorial character Sirius does tell you how to do everything INCLUDING how to build and use Bomb Bridges in the first level. (Green Garden: Stage 1). I never saw the instruction manual, but I knew how to do that and I was a stupid little kid. Second, since you mentioned that the Wii-U version doesn't support multiplayer costumes, I would like to point out that this game emulates very well. There's an issue with the introduction video the last time I tried it, but everything in-game works flawlessly with no graphical issues. If you want to play this, I'd recommend doing it that way so that you still get the costumes. Finally, for anybody playing multiplayer, if you mash the Start button as fast as you can until you hear a chime on the Main Menu, you'll unlock the extra multiplayer stages without needing 100%.
This is random but would you be able to make a Top Ten games within games list? Mini games or maybe even video games like Night in the Wood's Demontower. Thanks for constantly putting up such fantastic videos! I'm always blown away by your passion!
I remember drawing a lot of bomberman fan art after I played BM64, maaaan. . I had a BLAST playing it. Would love to play it again. Had some sick tunes!

Well planet Vegeta was named after the King when they made it their home, their original planet was called Sadla.
How do we know Bomberman wasn't named after the planet?
Thank you for covering this game. This and Bomberman 64 The Second Attack are 2 of my absolute favourite N64 games.
Great! Will you ever play "Bomberman 64 second attack"?
It's wayyy Darker than the original game!
Great video! Bomb bridges are actually one of my favorite parts of the game, and figuring out some of the Rainbow Palace puzzles felt incredibly satisfying. Interesting to hear people didn't enjoy it as much haha
YUP ITS HIM
Worst way to introduce Bomberman in a game
Agustin Leguiza Not really. At least Sakurai didn’t kill him on screen like Waluigi and Alucard.
@@smeck2067 lol. Still Sakurai killed his chance of being playable.
@@smeck2067 also Alucard had way more screen time than Bomberman...
GOTTA SAY you are the best, your appearance in Retropalloza was the highlight of my weekend
Legendary
I SEE THAT BOMBERMAN 64 THE SECOND ATTACK IN THE BACKGROUND! One of my absolute favorite games on the entire console. So much more polished than the first game.
(Obligatory “This was the bomb” joke)
Tons of nostalgia for this one as it was one of the very first games me and my brothers got for the N64. Played it a lot. And I actually really like the music. It's simple, but catchy. I especially LOVE the credits music, gets stuck in my head all the time.
jirard you let a cuss word through noooooooo honey whyyyyyyyyyyyy
fuck
BRUH I 100% completed this game years ago as a teenager, having revisited it years after "beating it" as a kid. My mind was blown looking at nearly how much I missed as a kid.
Love Bomberman Heroes better.
I do prefer that gameplay style a bit more to this one, yeah.
My favorite is 2nd Attack.
"Music is just okay" he says. XD
As a non-Nintendo fan who loves video game music, this game has some of the best music I've heard in a while. "Blue Resort" is a wondrously good track. It's actually what made me curious to check out this episode of your show. Cause I had no idea what this game looked like.
I own all 4 BomberMan games on the N64. Love them.
Jirard can I just say you have the best script out of most review channels
FINALLY! The highlight of this episode was Jirard teasing a Hollow Knight episode! This game is the best Metroidvania out there.
God, seeing Artemis and Regulus in the thumbnail hurled me back about two decades. I really miss this game.
Glad you beat BomberMan 64, I absolutely loved this game as a kid. Wish I could have helped, if you ever want to play it on the N64 with the costumes I still have my completed copy. I saw you guys talking about best N64 games and could only think of this game.
Wait... Did they not censor the curse at 16:26? I had to go back and hear it again. Weird to hear it not bleeped out.
I think the first time the game "tells" you about bomb bridges is during the incomplete ending credits.
Lots of little gameplay snippets in there of bridges being made and used, and I remember my mind being blown as a kid when I realized just what the possibilities were.
I always loved the character designs for this one. Wish they would bring them back!
Yes yes yes yes one of my favorite games of all time. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing it will almost bring me to tears hearing it....I wish this is what Bomberman R could’ve been for the switch
All of the N64 bomberman games were my introduction to being rewarded for completing games. So stoked to watch this.
Bomberman 64. Bomberman Hero. 64: The Second Attack. Max 2.
Aaah, good games.
And then you had the Jetters anime~
Such feels.
Ah my first bomber man game, never reached the 120 gold card mark but I did love the 3D adventure it provided along with the fun multiplayer where if you stun someone, you can just throw them to their doom.
oh man, I was just thinking about bomberman generations for the gamecube! I am so glad this came out today!
That Hollow Knight foreshadowing XD. Great video, always been curious about the Bomberman series.
Holy crap! 20 years and I had no idea there were unlockable multiplayer maps!!
Dr.Strangelove? What a pull. Great show guys.
This is random but would you be able to make a Top Ten games within games list? Mini games or maybe even video games like Night in the Wood's Demontower. Thanks for constantly putting up such fantastic videos! I'm always blown away by your passion!
Glad i finally got around to watching your videos! Love em!
I remember drawing a lot of bomberman fan art after I played BM64, maaaan. . I had a BLAST playing it. Would love to play it again.
Had some sick tunes!
This game is iconic! Should have been on madness for dat story, the completion bonus AND that amazing multi-player!
Never played this one but I remember playing my dad's copy of Super Bomberman on the SNES. That game has some super memorable music
It's really awesome you have the rare Bomberman 64: Second Attack. If you can do a Completionist episode on that, that'll be pretty cool.
