Oxhorn, you misunderstand the concept of the book. It is a mirror, as in, a mirror to the person who reads it. The same page you read that spoke of zane killing himself is the same page that Zane read, that would have shown something else to his eyes. Its an 'eye of the beholder' sort of thing. The writing on the page changes to REFLECT the current situation, and the consqeuences of your actions. You would never be able to read what Zane or connor of the others read, because you are not the mirror of them. The page is your mirror, just like it is their mirror. A mirrors image changes depending on who is looking into it.

@ Joshua Tercero - By the same token though, if the Krivbeknih was a mod rather than part of the fallout universe, then i'm sure the same argument would be made about that as well.
I wonder if maybe the Dev team has a somewhat different vision of the game than the players seemingly do, because to me this fits perfectly in line with the themes of Krivbeknih, the Cabot family and Dunwich Borers.

Things like screws, gears, metal and stuff like that for the actual parts of the gun (stock, muzzle, barrel etc.) And as you got the parts he/she would tell you a little bit about serving for the Mojave and end up sharing a little bit about their personal life, all leading up to them being your companion (with an added affinity system) once the AMR is complete.

His videos sure helped me find things in the New Vegas DLCs that I never noticed before. I've combed the hell out of the Sierra Madre, Zion, Big Mountain, and the Divide but there was still stuff I had missed every time. I still have never blown all the warheads in Lonesome Road nor found the Survivalist's Rifle in Honest Hearts (not that I ever use 12.7 mm guns in the game).
If I ever visit the real Las Vegas, I'd love nothing more than to do it as a fan pilgrimage. Mirroring the Courier's path (assuming you do it the "right way", as Obsidian intended), I'd start in the real Goodsprings, then go south through Primm, turn east and head through Nipton, then turn north and go up through where Novac and HELIOS One would be, then detour to Boulder City, and from there to the IRL Strip. Once at the Strip, I'd then go to the Stratosphere Las Vegas and go to the front desk. I'd ask the receptionist to speak to a Robert House, telling them that I'm a courier he hired to deliver him a platinum poker chip but got intercepted by a bunch of toughs at Goodsprings, robbed of the chip, shot in the head, and buried alive in a shallow grave. If the receptionist says there's no Mr. House, I'll tell them he might answer to Not-at-Home. I'd then visit the IRL Nellis Air Force Base, Red Rock Canyon, Nelson, etc., capping it all off with a trip to everyone's favorite Old World wall, Hoover Dam.

Another thing I enjoy is he explains if his mods interfere with the CC. I watched another RUclips do this CC and he found a Halloween Magazine during the quest. I spent some time hunting down answers until I found a different youtuber. She went to the location and it wasn’t there, leaving me to believe it was a Mod he did not complete before “The Paper Mirror” quest.

PS The book is rewriting itself to fit everyone's story, that's the point if an all knowing book, not to reveal all of its secrets, it narrates how it would make sense to the reader. It would be weird if the book just ended at a blank page and wouldn't write anymore, and wi th the end of ones life the book just find a new host, someone who will have their story told. The book connects where ones story ends and the other begins.

The Paper Mirror is also the name of a quest inside the Interesting NPCs mod for Skyrim made by (guess who) Kris Takahashi. It follows a very similar story, and it's not like it's never shown up in history before. I've heard more than a few myths and folk-tales about a book that tells the future, but the more it's used the more you're cursed. We also have to remember that there's no shortage of insanity in Fallout, after all you can't forget the ghost in the mansion in Nuka World. She's not tied to any ancient evil deity, but she's just as paranormal.

I second your complaint about the way the story fragments were written, though from my perspective, it's more a matter of the quality of the writing. The stories seem like they were supposed to be in the Third-Person, Omniscient form of narration -- a pretty common style, used across pretty much every genre and by countless authors -- but the style of the writing, the specific word choices and the sense of flow, read more like someone's play-by-play commentary by a narrator, like someone's speaking out loud just off-stage as if giving direction to an inexperienced actor.
What might've helped sell this story is if the writing from this enigmatic oracular book read like an actual story -- detailing not just the actions of the actors, but the setting, the ambiance, the emotions and perhaps snippets of inner monologue running through their heads... y'know, that sort of thing. Without that kind of care and attention, the Book feels like a decent idea that was sorely underutilized by the very people that created it, and the quest tied to the gun feels flatter and more lifeless for it -- like someone put really drab beige wrapping paper around one of your birthday presents. Presentation counts for a lot more than some people think, really.
Suppose that's a good pro tip for any mod-makers out there: if you're cooking up a quest centered around narrative material and lore entries, get someone who writes to handle those -- because otherwise, you'll end up with narrative junkies like yours truly going over the script with a red pencil and making revisions instead of enjoying your mod.

Think you read too much into Zane's mirror. Or not enough. I mean the implication was supposed to be that he didn't know that anyone else had one (the page that was torn out by the final gang member was done in secret). And that what he read was probably exactly what you read. That it told him what was going to happen. That he was going to get mad, get depressed, realize the only way out was to shoot himself... just as the book predicted he was going to do.
At least that's how I read it personally. He didn't negate fate. He was reading literally this book describing his reaction to something and what he was doing, unable to stop himself. It's a somewhat uncommon, but not exactly unheard of horror trope that goes on. When someone gets a prophecy they're actively reading and it basically takes control of how they respond. Not just describing events passively but describing their own thoughts and emotions. Taking away any pretext of free will and choice from the person reading/hearing it.
It's an aspect of horror I actually really like, because it's far scarier than most other things. It butts against (but predates) what people call Cosmic Horror. The idea that you're insignificant. That despite everything you claim to be. Everything you think drives, defines, and distinguishes you... you can just be turned into a mindless pawn near effortlessly.
It's what the mod seemed to be going for. Set up from the very first story that you pick up. It tells you that you're going to just leave and go find this thing. Which of course you will.
It's thematic to say, New Vegas's Lonesome Road DLC. Where Ulysses comments on the nature of the player to just follow pip boy markers and instructions. That he brought this package to the Divide and pressed a button that demolished the Divide just because it was there and he wanted to know what it does.
Similarly it's pressing against the nature of the game and the player. As much as the game calls itself open world. As much as it might pretend that you can make any character... it is that easy to control you. That something can just dictate your fate and you'll do it without question.
They wanted to do it less in a satirical meta sense however, and more like that classic horror trope. The book is the Quest Markers and Objectives. It told the man he was going to get angry, depressed, drink, and commit suicide... and he was going to. Because it said so. It didn't need more of a reason than that. And what happens in a universe where the quest marker and objective maker will force you into that?

  • @LunalynDragon
    @LunalynDragon 6 лет назад +30

I'm glad you acknowledged the counter-argument with this quest. Plus, you brought about legitimate problems with its execution that I didn't notice on my run-through.
Ultimately it's a quest that definitely could have been done better, even if it's fun for people who enjoy some of the more fantastical elements of the universe such as myself.
Also it makes no sense to attach the gun to a quest that is completely irrelevant to it when they could have made something to really tie into the weapon's story. Imagine how great it would be to track down the story of a former NCR ranger who made their way to the Commonwealth and succumbed to their fate. That would have been much more appropriate.

I enjoyed having your level capped in New Vegas. It made choosing your perks more meaningful. You couldn’t just make your character a master in every weapon type. It was always a huge decision early on in the game to make my character energy or ballistic focused, or be better at explosives but progress slower and be limited by on the primary weapon type. Not to mention, the amazing variety of weapons in each category. Being able to change the sights/stock/receiver/etc. of a weapon doesn’t even come close to having a larger variety of different weapons.

But there is something to be said for the lack of a level cap in F:4; it's a lot more accessible for people that don't play many rpg games. That and sometimes it's fun to take an older character into completely new direction or test a new play style without going through that stupidly long tutorial. And to be honest, the GRA pack was only good for having the 3 extra ammunition types for the AMR and shotguns, because the cap pricing in game for all the modifications to your guns, and the guns, can reach upwards in the tens of thousands of caps. Really only attainable at end-game for maybe one weapon, or if you dump into barter and get enough caps.

A fairly large open area but with waist high cover scattered about and about half a dozen or so sniping points that is out of VATS reach for the sniper to hunker down in and take pot shots at you, switching positions after 2 or 3 shots. The sniper would either have a movement speed modifier that turns him into Usain Bolt, or have invisibility when crouched.
How you deal with the sniper is up to you.
You can either pull out your own sniper rifle and try to find and shoot him first.
Put mines on what you think are sniping points and predicted pathways to blow him away.
Run about guns blazing in power armor and tank those .50 rounds and hope for the best.
Wait for night or take a stealthboy and sneak up on him.

i feel like bethesda could've taken this "mirror" idea and ran with it creating a whole in depth side quest it wouldve been really cool to have played through this mod finding the endings of more people in zane's raider gang eventually leading up to the sole survivor finding the book and destroying it getting a legendary antimaterial or harnessing its paranormal powers to give them a different legendary anti material rifle with a huge V.A.T.S. increase because V.A.T.S. can possibly be enhanced by its future seeing powers like a sharingan or something or it could give them a slow time affect or stop the game and see what the enemy is going to do without it actually happening ad would be great with seeing trajectories of grenades and the explanation could simply be that the raiders found the book in the museum of witchcraft and brought it to their lair and that the page that belongs to the sole survivor simply fell out the book from 200 years of wear and tear and the could've said that the creators of the dunwich company had roots in the museum of witchcraft

this creation quest definitely falls into the "Eldritch/supernatural" side of Fallout lore, like you said the Krivbeknih or Dunwich stories and their supernatural weirdness. i think The Book's suppose to be either a book of fate or a literal mirror of fates, changing to read out what happened and has some sort of memetic properties (reading the pages messes with the reader's mind slightly) or supernatural qualities. either or, it definitely predicts the most plausible future if nothing changes and it's likely the missing pages were "Sole Survivor" pages and/or an entirely different character who set the first page in the Witch Museum. Zane least likely, maybe Connor if he read the book enough, but i wanna say the original owner of both gun and book before Zane, as if they were twisted by the book to preform the tasks before accepting their story's end.
Lore friendly? i'd say possible but only if you accept the supernatural events in Fallout's lore as a "weird" canon. by that i mean, such events that either involve aliens or unexplained powers ARE canon by means of some insane super science is happening that we just can't fathom as we are. ex: Cabot and his family, the Krivbeknih, the Ghost of She (the flaming Yao Guai you can only fight when drugged), and maybe Far Harbor's Mother of the Fog tho that might push it a bit. recently i even watched your old video on one of the many attractions in Nuka World, the Grandchester Mystery Mansion, and that even held hints of supernatural happenings tho it all looks faked up until you finally spot the girl who runs away and vanishes at the dead end along with the squatter's notes on unusual events. so "The Mirror" could be comfortable among those canon events as it's supernatural and really hard to explain without the impossible being probable.

    My interpretation the quest:
I think the book was similar to the Krivbeknih, but it had been destroyed/ripped apart. Since a page of it appeared to have magic properties, it made its way into the Museum of Witchcraft (I am assuming the page had always been there and the player can't interact with it until the creation was bought, not that because the creation was bought the page was put there). I think the reason the pages were referred to as mirrors was because they only show the fate of the reader. Because of this, reading a page Zane read would not show the reader what he saw since we are "seeing ourselves" in the mirror and not Zane. I also don't believe the pages tell the future (since we can defy the pages by not killing Ivy), instead they are leading the readers to reassemble the book.

But the book did tell him he was going to commit suicide. Because someone was coming for him and there was nothing he could do. Remember they were written in past tense just like yours. The fact that the person coming for him also had a mirror was what made him feel the mirror betrayed him. As it was deciding it was his time to die and someone else's time to help. Hence the "it will betray you too".
Also the page he slammed on the table is that page. The one telling him there was nothing he could do. The one you just read.

I find that games very rarely get Lovecraftian style horror right. Lovecraftian horror focuses on a single character facing unknowable horrors, and leaves the reader wondering if it was a tale of the supernatural, or a tale of madness. Fallout doesn't leave you wondering at all; what happens is definitely supernatural. You pressed the Krivbekneh into the obelisk, and it let out an unearthly scream, killing any surviving ghouls. Lorenzo has lived well over 300 years because of the power of the crown, and can grant you a serum from his blood that makes you a berserker. The mirror tells the story of everyone who reads it, including their end. There is no illusion of the supernatural or threat of madness, it's all there.

I agree with your first thoughts on the quest. I wouldn't have finished reading the first note and only "read" the others to get the quest to move forward.
A good quest II can think of for 2 versions of the same weapon is have it based on 2 choices. Make the one you get in the quest have a unique legendary effect(different effects can be had) and overall better stats and the one you get from a vendor has a random vanilla effect with maybe less accuracy or range. Quest scenario... you find a note on a bulletin board asking for help retrieving something. Yes a fetch quest. So you talk to the quest giver and she claims her now ex had stolen a ring that's important to her when he left and she wants you to go get it. So typical fetch quest you go find the "thief" and have a choice of ask nicely as threateningly. Both get the same response of "I didn't steal her ring she gave it to me for our 1 year anniversary." If you asked threateningly he gets all angry and demands to fight you, which you pull out your gun and he immediately changes his mind on the fight gives you the ring and swears she really did give it to him and it's not worth the trouble. If you asked nicely he tells you the same story but instead of getting all mad he wants a bottle of booze for it and since you are in a bar there's booze to be had. Turns out the ring has a -5 luck legendary effect and is called Unlucky Ring. Now you go to deliver the ring.
When you give her the ring she tells you a sob story about a boyfriend that beat her once and she would like you to teach him a lesson, since she lied before you may not believe her but you do go confront him. When you come across him he is in a bank behind the window and there's a locked door to the right that requires a key which is hidden in the room you are in. You have a choice of being threatening or ask nicely about the incident. If you ask nicely he claims she slapped him so he left her. If you confront him he admits it and leaves by a back door which by the time you get through it he is long gone. So you return and she asks you to give the ring to someone she likes.
This ones simple, deliver the ring, but you get a choice on what to say to the guy. Choice A is "Brenda asked me to give this to you" Choice B is "You have an admirer who wanted you to have this." A he gets all the hell no's rolling, he saw how she treated his friend (first person). If you choose B he says thanks but no thanks his girlfriend would make him sleep on the couch for a month. So you return with the ring. When you arrive at her door you hear the second guy yelling at her and accusing her of stealing his "lucky" ring and thanks to her terrible bounty hunter she sent after him he was reminded of her existence. So you go into the room and he sees you are wearing the ring because as the quest designer I kinda equipped as you entered the room lol. He tells her he will deal with her after dealing with her new boyfriend/girlfriend that she gave his ring to and he draws the weapon with the legendary effect your choices set him up with and it's a fight to the death. Remember you have a -5 luck effect and he has a badass gun lol. So in the first part of the quest it was which weapon he will have, Second was to introduce the bad guy, third part was to get you out of the house and need to return as well as set the legendary on it.
In the end she sees the ring and gets scared because if you did unequip I the quest maker equipped it again and she tells you the ring made her steal it the first time and made her lie to you about her ex stealing it, and she doesn't know why she wanted you to confront the man she stole it from because that happened 10 years ago and she deserved it because she kicked him in the groin for forgetting her pork and beans and the ring made her do that. As for giving it to the other guy... she doesn't like him, he smells funny and his jokes are bad. She wants you to destroy the ring and heard Saugus Ironworks has a working smelter... only way to be sure. So you go toss it into the smelter/get a chance to play with your new toy and return for a cash reward, a safe place to sleep for the night in the spare bedroom, and you can get a home cooked meal once a day from her.
To tie the ring into Fallout lore, if you looked carefully at it you would have seen the name of the Dunwich exec/owner/family member mentioned in Fallout 3 on the inside of the ring. If you choose not to destroy the ring and lie to her and say you did, the next time you visit her for a meal or sleep(this will happen if you did "destroy" it but the third time you visit) she will be dead, mining gear is all over the house, and the ring is in her inventory with a note signed by the Dunwich person named on the ring... Turns out according to the note she is a Dunwich and she died because she denied her heritage and refused to do what was demanded of her through the ring. New quest begins and that's to destroy it for real this time, and once you do the quest sends you back to her house to bury her in her "garden". When you get to her house... Surprise!!!! she is there asking if everything is alright, you tell her that you didn't actually destroy the ring the first time(you realized you really didn't do it the first time once you did it the second time) and you visited this morning/yesterday/whatever and she was dead with the ring so you did take it and destroy it and you were returning to do a funeral. Shje says you did show up looked at her without really seeing her, mumbled something incoherent and walked out. Since you never asked before you ask if her last name is Dunwich and she says that was her mothers last name. And after a few thankfully the ring is finally gone bits the quest ends for good with a new note in your inventory saying "There are others. Kill her. Kill HER! You will deliver me to the others and if they accept me you will serve them." incoherent scribbles followed by... "No, No way. I cant kill her, I wont! You have no hold on me... this time I will destroy you." signed by you.
Now that's how you make a quest that's not just go here, kill that. You get creative.

To be honest, I was very hyped when I heard they were bringing this gun back in F4 from FNV and I was "Oh, this could be interesting!" When I bought it, I immediately began doing the quest itself and I was enthralled by the storytelling. I then wanted to find out more about the mystery surrounding the quest...like what is this book they are talking about? How did the Anti-Material Rifle found its way from the West Coast to Massachusetts? And most importantly, how they found the book? When I completed the quest, I was disappointed because they left alot of plot holes in the quest itself that just didn't really make sense within the context of the Lore and the characters who were shown in the creation itself didn't support that. But the gun itself is very awesome. Now to me is it really worth the 400 credits? Well, here's my advice. I am someone who likes to find out about lore-sophisticated story's in its world but when I played the quest I didn't enjoy the story itself but I did enjoy the Storytelling in it. So...If you are person who is a gunslinger and simply enjoy guns...then yes, it is worth it, but if you are someone who is a lore seeker then you,re gonna be disappointed but hey it's your money... That,s just my advice. I still believe that some of the creators in creation club can make a really good creation and we already seen the evidence that they made like the Tunnel Snakes, Captain Cosmos, etc...But It's just that some moments presented in the creations are "paint by numbers" and for me I would give this creation a 7/10. So if you just want the gun then buy it but if you are here for the quest then well... you decide. Oh, And I love your videos Oxhorn! 😊

So if the tubes have thin walls then the pressure caused by a knurling operation would almost guaranteed deform the tube, no? Thats the big risk with knurling even solid stock. Although i guess it was likely faced, turned down to size' knurled, drilled, bored then parted in that order (oh and threaded to attach to the gun)

One simple answer is that the tube might be thicker than you'd expect. Another explanation is that the knurling would be done close to the threads of the suppressor. The area where the threads has space taken already by the "nut" that threads on, so that area isn't very spacious for the gas expansion anyway. It could be solid material or just much thicker than the rest of the suppressor tube, so knurling it there wouldn't be a problem.

I think they put the bolt on the wrong side of the gun. Not unless it was custom made for a left-handed shooter...???
