    Lived near the plant as a young kid. My older brother and I would make sad faces while watching the bottles go around the machines. Lots of times the workmen would motion for us to come to the side door where they would slip us one or two. Sure it was room temperature but free trumps temperature every time.

He is not from Detroit, and we live in Colorado now. I don't know if he believed us or if he thinks it is just another one of our weird family quirks.

  • @badbiker666
    @badbiker666 3 года назад +4

    Great video! But the narrator failed to mention why a drink originally created, sold, bottled, and enjoyed by generations of Detroiters is called a Boston Cooler when mixed with ice cream. The reason for this is that Detroit's Boston Boulevard was very near the original bottling plant, so when the soda fountain started selling it, it needed a name and that's what it got. Other soda manufacturers promote their soft drink mixed with ice cream as "Boston Coolers" as well, but Vernors filed a patent for it in 1967, so that makes it officially theirs.
    Also, a true Boston Cooler is not just Vernors poured over ice cream, the two are mixed, more like a shake. However, most of us who drink Vernors and love Boston Coolers pour the golden liquid over the vanilla ice cream and then wait for them to melt together. It tastes amazing, and you don't need a mixer to make it.

I now live in Southern California and it's available here in grocery stores. If you buy it in two-liter plastic bottles it loses its carbonated fizz quite quickly. The taste is the same, but the fizz that gets into your nose and makes you sneeze isn't as evident. The drink also tastes watered down. But hey, everything was better remembered from childhood. Great video. I also remember Vernor's Ice Cream from living in Michigan in the late 1970s. Another video suggestion -- do one on Moxie from New England. Moxie makes Vernors seem really tame.

    Vernors saved me when I was pregnant with my son. I would pop a bottle in the fridge before I went to bed, then when I woke up I would go straight to the fridge, pop open the bottle, drink it , and my stomach would settle down for the day. I still love it today--when I visit with my son, now 36 (!!!), we sit on the back patio with our Vernors!

    So cool! A lot of people have commented on being served Vernors when you were sick. It may have been more placebo than panacea but it tasted great and made you feel better.
    Loved the picture of the Boblo Boat. Vernors, Faygo, Boblo, Better Made, Sanders, Hudsons, Strohs, and Greenfield Village. If you grew up in Detroit back in the day you knew them all well.

    In 2000 I took a vacation tour of Michigan. Our guide said Vernors ginger ale was the best there was and bought each of us a bottle. I loved it but it is not sold where I live so I haven't had it since. If I go to Michigan again I will definitely buy some more.

    I grew up on Vernors and just assumed I'd always be able to have it. We lived in the Windsor-Detroit area then (Chatham, Ontario). Have not seen it anywhere since the late 1960s. I had no idea it was even made any more. I remember the ads: "VERNORS - Va-Va-VOOM!" It had a much more gingery taste than Canada Dry.

    I was born in Flint and drank this as a kid. Fast forward and I'm living in Alabama. My daughter would get Canada dry ginger ale and I thought it was just watery. We were in a store one day when I saw Verners for the first time in years and pointed it out to my daughter. She had to try it. Needless to say she never wanted Canada dry again.

    You couldn't find it outside Michigan for a long time. My wife's eldest sister moved to Wisconsin in 1980 & when she'd come back for family get togethers, she'd buy about 6 cases & stack them in the trunk hoping it would last till the next trip home. It also changed in the early 1980's when it was sold. It used to be you couldn't inhale while taking a drink because you would cough. It hasn't had that effect since it was sold. My wife & I moved to ND in 2009. We couldn't find it at first. Finally the wife found it in one of the areas super markets there were 2 six packs of cans, all covered in dust & 7.99 a piece. Wow! I paid the price because I wanted some. More recently we've found that Wal Mart sometimes has it. When they do, we stock up, not knowing how long it will be before we see it again.

    I grew up in the LA area and could find them in our stores. So grew with Vernors and when I later moved out of state, hard to find. Vernors has to be the best ginger drive, the only brand I will drink when ever I have a ginger drink.
