I have an 1977 Alvarez model 5022 "Barn Find" I found in the upper loft of my aunt's barn and surprisingly it is in great shape going through the Michigan summer and winter weather!!!!! It is surprisingly just like you bought it brand new. And the old wood tone is incredible!!!!! I am blown away I found this and what A GIFT I CONSIDER IT TO BE!!!!! I wish you all could hear it.

Very nice!any time you can find something you long for and get a good price,it's a winner. I also have several Guitars from late 70s too current from Alvarez and some have the MOJO and other's are great wall hangers but still look better than wall paper lol.thanks for sharing
the dy74 is a wellington series made from 1974-1998.The back and sides are laminated rosewood.A copy of martin d-28. I have one from 1998.The top is over 250 years old ! the treble is bright and clear, the bass is distinct and tight.A very balanced sound.With thick strings 013-056 the sound is deep, fat, round, bound to pound your ears !
Pronounced "Ya-ear-ee" . That guitar is Rosewood back and sides and Sitka Spruce top.

I have an Alvarez from the late 70's and I love it. If you do some research you will find that the "fog" in the finish is not uncommon. Mine has it and that's just the way they are. Also, you should never oil the inside of a guitar, it is meant to be unfinished. (I'm also not too sure about using tea tree oil) You never checked the most important thing about an Alvarez - the way it sounds. I'll put mine up against a Martin any day.

Kazuo Yairi 1932-2014
As Andrew says below, the DY74 has laminated back and sides. Not solid. No big deal. It doesn't really affect the sound. What is that guitar with the weird bridge? I don't think that is a Kauso Yairi. Pretty wood, but... the bridge.... Not my style. I have 3 Alvarex Yairi guitars. A 73 5036 Classical, Coral Rosewood. Two 1970's DY85's. One with jacaranda back and sides. One with 3 piece back and sides, in burled mahogany. Stunning look and sounds. Once owned by Waylon Jennings, I was told. Ha ha!!... I don't/didn't believe it. But, it is really beautiful!
I know it's solid wood on this particular one because I can see through the wood grains/inperfections from the back and side and they match with what's viewed from internal of the guitar. The other is my 1994 Alvarez Yairi DY70, also signed by Yairi, that featured high-tech graphite bridge that's stronger than a piece of wood, yeah the look is untraditional but really grew on me over the past year. Solid flaming maple sides and back.
@@TheGizmoGarage I know it LOOKS like it's solid because Yairi used quality wood through out. No cheap wood in the center of the lamination. But, that's how they made the lamination process work so well, just using thinner pieces. Don't be ashamed of laminated back and sides. It makes very little difference. As long as the top is solid, that's all you really need.
That DY70 is a Yairi… only model I could find that used the teardrop bridge. Real pretty maple B&S… btw, I’m jealous over your 3-piece B&S 85 lol. That’s my end-game dread and I’m gonna sell my 77 if I can ever find one so long as it matches competes tonally. That burled ‘hog body and headstock paired w that EIR center just blows my skirt up haha. What a stunning

@@andrewcannon8561 The mahogany 3PC is a 1978. The other one is a 1976. They both sound really great. Hard to go wrong with either model.

Was a bit relieved you had to return the 74. Over $1000 is top dollar for that model, which is laminated back and sides. A fine guitar no doubt, but you can do better finding a vintage Yairi dread for a grand+. I’d rather have that unique 70 anyway. With patience you can find a heralded dy77 with the timeless herringbone and East Indian Rosewood for under a grand; and an earlier vintage. Someone near me is selling a dy85 with its stunning abalone binding and Jacaranda back and sides for $1000. Keep building chops w your beautiful 70 and the right one will come your way. I’m waiting on the day a 70s yw-1000 falls in my lap.
I'm glad I returned the 74, I'm playing on my 70 every day and now feel no need to upgrade in foreseeable future, although if opportunity does come as you said, I might not be able to resist the temptation to grab one.
Heck yeah… that 70 is a nicer acoustic than alot of folks will ever own. I understand the allure tho lol. I had researched and researched (something told me I was a Yairi man), waited while my funds continued to grow little by little. I was bound and determined to find a 70s-era dy90 without breaking the bank. Found it but the seller absolutely refused to ship it to me. Then a ‘75 dy77 popped up… slightly better deal than the 90. Bought it from the family of a recently deceased WW2 vet guitar picker. I’m the 2nd owner and that guitar is PURE MAGIC. Oh the tone. I’m not even a good enough player to own it. I’m still in awe of the fact that is my first fine acoustic when the guitar in my avatar becomes available in FL where my cousin lives. Turns out it’s the greatest deal I’ll ever come across. It’s a Near Mint A/Y YM-1; which is basically the genesis of the Yairi Masterworks line. Those solid-body guitars start at 2K+… YM-1 was made from 1995-‘98 ish. Neckblock hand signed by Kazuo Yairi. Gentleman sold it to me cousin who shipped it to me for $650. Moral of the story is sometimes the right ones find their way home. Good luck on ur journey, be patient and keeping pickin’ 👍
I thought all those higher model Yairis 70+ were all solid woods, people certainly liste them as such.

They’re not, regardless of what OP believes. I own a DY77 from the 70s… modeled after a Martin D28. Only structural difference is Kazuo’s own laminating process which ensures durability/rigidity. They’re the finest laminated in the world, imo…but not solid like the Martin. Needless to say, there’s a discrepancy in price for a reason. But many a Yairi will go head to head with a Martin, if not knock ‘em off. They’re that good. Even higher models like the AY dy85 (Martin D41 clone), AY dy90 (Martin d45 clone) are laminated. Even the flagship international Yairi YW1000 is laminated back and sides. Needless to

Probably start at 3K if you can ever find one. As far as why the wonderful laminates are so expensive?… may be due to Kazuo Yairi having passed away, idk. I probably wouldn’t take less than $1,200 for my dy77, simply bc it’s that good.
