Are you a morning person or a night owl? I've never been an early bird - and lately I've been wondering why. This pattern in your sleep/wake cycle is called your "chronotype" and appears to be influenced by your genetics. It has some interesting effects on your health - from some people being more agreeable and proactive to others eating and drinking more. Do you notice an effect on your health? And, perhaps, have you noticed your chronotype change over time? 🌚

I think that those cons for being a night owl might be more related to the fact that we live in a Day Person's world rather than that there are inherent health issues or what have you in being a night owl. If we depraved a Day Person of their proper sleep cycle, couldn't we find the same long term effects that seem to correlate with Night Owl-ness?

I was just looking up some stuff on Google Scholar and found that there are some studies showing negative learning outcomes (mostly like, doing worse on performance tasks) for mismatched morning types with others implying that we'd see maladaptive behaviors in morning people later at night but drew that conclusion by testing the inverse. So the answer is probably but we don't know for certain.

I've always been a night owl. No matter what, unless I am working I will always slip back into the pattern of bed at 3 am up by 10-11am. What I find interesting though is, it seems like once it hit midnight I get a sudden burst of motivation and I want to do things that I wouldn't have the motivation for otherwise and like with the motivation as soon as it hits midnight it's difficult to switch my thoughts off so I can sleep

Night owl definitively, I feel much more motivated at night. If I try to wake up early (7am) and keep up with this discipline, I never feel as "brain active" as I would if I go to sleep around 3 or 4 am and wake up around 10 or 11 am. This is very interesting since, in my opinion, we are wasting a lot of potential for trying to make everyone sleep early.

Born a morning person to two night owls. Flipped to night owl during puberty. My military recruiter assured me I'd be a morning person after bootcamp - didn't happen! I've also tended to need more sleep per day than the average person, with it averaging between 9-11 hours at different points through adulthood.
**_But particularly interesting_** is the one time in my adult life when I didn't have to interact with anyone else on a regular schedule. For those two months I had an hourly meeting once a week that I was encouraged to attend, and mostly did. Otherwise, as long as I could email in progress every few days, I was completely on my own. Other than the days with meetings, I didn't use an alarm of any sort to wake up. During that period, **_I tended to stay awake for 17-18 hours at a go, and then sleep for 8-9, so over the course of those months, I literally cycled through the clock._** Ever since, I've wondered how I could live schedule-free, but have yet to find a sustainable way to do so.

My sleep cycle is all fucked up.
Sometimes I sleep during the night, sometimes during the day.
It sort of cycles, for example, one day I wake up at 10:00 AM, the next day at 11, then 12, and so on, until I start waking up at night, and go to sleep in the morning, and then the cycle repeats.
That's probably because I'm a NEET (not for lack of trying to get a job), and I don't have forced fixed times to do things, so I can do stuff whenever I'm awake, it doesn't matter.
I do greatly prefer to be awake during the night though.

All my life I've been a night owl - for over 30 years. I have rarely had to get up before noon for work and I've been mostly working at night (at live music events).
Since I've started taking better care of what I eat and drink and got fitter and way less of a lazy slob, I've stopped wanting to stay up late and sleep until noon. I now regularly wake up around 9 AM or earlier instead of 1PM or something like that - without an alarm clock set.
Most of my depressive tendencies have vanished as well. I used to wake up every day wishing I was never born, dreading everything I had to do that day and avoiding any kind of work that I could avoid. Now I wake up in the morning, think about what I have to do or prepare for the day, then I procrastinate as long as I can, and then I do stuff.

I think all throughout my childhood and grade school I was a night owl, but ever since I started (and completed) my college life, I've become an early bird. I never had a problem with 8am classes despite how everyone ever told me never to take them or I'd hate my life. I don't know why this shift happened, if it was just genetic or I trained myself to enjoy waking up before the sun does. I personally feel like I get the most out of my day when I wake up early. I get the most ours of sunlight to get things done, and just *do* things in general. I will always wake up before my alarm goes off, no matter how early I set it for. I feel liked a really seized the day. Granted, as a trade off I'm exhausted by 8pm and in bed by 9, which makes it kind of hard to do anything fun out on the town after hours.

Don't apologize for your first cliche. It's a good one and you should go with it with confidence. Don't weaken your material when you are off to a good start.

Night owl. Ideally, I'd sleep from 8:00 a.m. to 16:00 but I have to go to University, so I sleep from 17:00 to 1:00 am. Not the best schedule, but at least I don't have to fight with the alarm clock and drag myself out of bed, and I can sleep 2 or 3 more hours if I need to. Since I was a kid I was terrible at waking up early to go to school, and my performance was terrible. When I became an adult I tried to sleep during the day and the change was absolute. Productivity, healthy meals, exercise, silence... no cons.

I'm naturally a night owl, and both those pros and cons relate to me. However, I have found that when I train myself to get up earlier, even if it's a conscious choice that goes against my natural rhythm, I find myself feeling generally happier and more social after about a month. But I find it difficult to keep it up.

I'm a night person, which was directly impacted by... school. By high school, sports + homework guaranteed that I'd be up late routinely. Then college magnified that. Staying up late used to give me headaches and make me loopy when I was tired, but then my body adjusted. Now I prefer to stay up late because everyone else has gone to bed and gotten out of my way :-D

I'm definitely a night owl, I work better at night and i usually fall to sleep at 3 Am and wake up at 9. I've been struggling to fix my sleeping pattern before I go back to college but thinking back to when I was in school, I always went in exhausted (I ended up bringing a portable coffee maker to school each day to stop falling asleep in class) . I also find that i have better reactions and my creativity peaks at 1 Am, but who knows? in your sleep deprived state you think anything average is great.

I always went to bed around 8-10 pm and woke up around 7 am until I was in high-school. My grandmother made sure I didn't stay up late and never missed school. When she passed away I went to bed later and later in the evening, sometimes staying up past 2 am, even though I had school in the morning. Thanks to my work schedule which starts at 5 pm and sometimes lasts until 12 am, I'm at a point where I'm writing this at 7 am in the morning, I have work today and I haven't slept yet.

Morning Person - In fact back when in the military my job involved 12 hour shifts where we would work 12 on 12 off for three (daytime) days then get 48 hours off then 12 on 12 off for two (nighttime) days then get 72 hours off. I do not think I ever got completely acclimated to the 'Night-Watches' they were always painful.
At one point I was in the situation where it was 12 on 12 off (days) for two weeks then 1 day off and 12 on 12 off (nights) for two weeks and one day off --- That was actually easier to do since my circadian rhythm actually shifted.

I've always been a night owl as well. I think a lot of those things are correlational and not causation. That aside, I've decided recently I'm not happy with my sleep schedule. Most of the time I found myself waking up around 2pm give or take a couple hours. I started finding I was unhappy because I felt like I would be accomplishing more in life if my waking time was spent in the day rather than night. I could get plenty of non social things done in my time awake, but things that needed me to go out in the world and interact with others I had less time for. I couldn't force myself to wake up or go to bed earlier so I spent a few days reseting my schedule by staying up later and later until eventually I was on a normal day schedule. For the last two weeks I've been up before 10am everyday and most days around 7-8am. Now I just need to start accomplishing things I intended to. One step at a time I guess. Side note, I also found that camping would force me awake with the sun no matter how much sleep I got.

I've always been a nightowl. I'm the most productive in the evenings and it's also when I have the most energy. I can wake up early in the morning, but I'm definitely way slower and don't take things in nearly as much. People always keep telling me it'll change when I get older, 'it's just a teenage thing', but I'm 27 now and it still hasn't changed, so I've much pretty accepted that my natural sleeping times are roughly between 2 am and 10 am. My dad's also a nightowl though (as is our dog), so we tend to have our best conversations (while playing with the dog) around midnight. But during the day, I do feel like I'm constantly jet lagged, I'm always tired, I get hungry at different times, it's really annoying.

It's currently 1am here and I just found the solution to a programming problem I've been trying to solve all day. According to my online project punch card I make the most progress between 16:00 and 03:00 o'clock so I'd say I'm a night owl. I am also a horrible person in the first hour or so if I have to wake up early (like 6am) and have to force myself to eat something in order to not suffer from an energy deficit 3hrs into school. It's basically been that way since I was a teenager. My sister is pretty much the same even though our parents are early birds.

I am neither night or morning. I can get get up at 5:30 AM and not sleep until Midnight for long periods. I work in the tech side of live theater and also teach theater tech at the college level.
