Such a true statement about gambling addiction. It's the worst addiction out there. It leaves you with less than nothing. The Stu Unger story is a very sad one. It's unbelievable how much money can swing in the wrong direction on a game that's supposed to be 50/50. Sports gambling is truly unreal.
Your comment is shared by many but statistically you are wrong. It's true that alcohol and drugs could kill you but it's also true that gambling could get you killed. Alcohol and drugs are substance addictions with treatments that work. Gambling is a behavioral addiction associated with grandiose narcissism. Wow great Stu Unger story. I've always been interested in him but never heard it like that. You may have kept your possessions but you would have lost your respect for yourself and from others. At least you have your balls and your respect.
Two part answer to the question of whether you were right. Part 1 is you never should have bet the race. You didn’t need the money. Part 2 is pretty clear. You should have gave them up and given them the money. The risk/reward of not giving them up was too much and you had the ability to make it up to them by lining their pockets. On a side note, the piano music in the intro is really good. Take care, Larry.

I had to stop at the 3 minute mark to correct this liar: Ungar's parents did not both die when he was a kid, his mother lived till he was 26. He had no other family, so why would he have to support them after his father died? There was no one to support, he supported his mother. He NEVER LIVED IN HARLEM!!!!!!! He did not grow up there. So much is wrong in just the first 3 minutes.
First, let me thank you for your feedback. Second, you are right it was only his father who died. However, he did leave school to support his mother. And you are also technically right he didn't live in Harlem he lived in Manhattan a couple of miles away, but his father's goulash joint, where he was raised every day, was in Harlem Now let me say this in my defense, everything you questioned and everything I said prior to him coming to Monticello was told to me by my friend Richie Adomo who was born and raised in Harlem and was a friend of his father. So it could be I that I misunderstood him or I misspoke. Prior to him coming to Monticello, I never heard of him. But once he arrived at Monticello, everything I said after that was 1000% true. If you have any doubt about anything I said after he arrived at Monticello, I welcome you as a guest on my podcast, and we can talk about whatever you think is a lie. I guess when a friend or anyone tells me something, before I repeat it, I should start off with a disclaimer. But you being such an expert on Stu's life you will know that everything I said after that is true but if you doubt any of it please accept my invitation.
