Great work, John. I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving.
Hey John, if the metal ring on the via comes off, that doesn't necessarily mean it's no good anymore. Often when the ring comes off, it's a via that doesn't connect to anything. Or, you can usually easily solder a bodge wire from the chip pin that goes into to that via to the pin of the chip it's supposed to connect to.
I always enjoy these open cart surgery videos. I’ve used tips learned here to help getting some of my games working. Good stuff!
Flux will help the solder flow down the pin to fill the hole better. You don't need it to take solder off the board or pins.
Well, in his case yes. If you are using solder wick it helps the wick to suck up solder better.
You will want to use flux even if desoldering, as flux will better enable the solder to flow once melted.
The better the solder can flow, the easier it will be to draw the solder away from the joint, whether using desoldering braid or a desoldering pump.
This is especially important with a double-sided board using vias in the holes. You need to get as much solder out of such a joint as possible.
Just be sure to clean away any excess flux once you are done soldering.
@@Watcher3223 There is an argument to be made on that as I have not seen experienced people use flux for a soldering gun. I doubt it will hurt it, but considering the design of the soldering gun I doubt it even matters.
😂😂😂😂😂😂Wrong😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
One of the greatest games on one of the greatest systems.
I love these videos and how balanced of a person you are. You don't need flux to take solder off the board or pins by the way.
I used to have the same desoldering gun. If you reduce the temp and use flux you will reduce the chance of burning etches off. Flux will lower the temp solder melts at. Old Nintendo is lead solder, not tin based. That gun is designed to handle the higher temps needed for tin solder. Apply the flux with a small brush. Then when done use rubbing alcohol to clean it off.
Impressive! That was great. And I appreciate how balanced of a person you are. This was a great vid, thanks for doing it
I wouldn't mess with the flux as I don't think you need it. You have done countless open-cart surgeries over the years and have been pretty successful at it. I think adding an extra step that you have never needed before...complicates things. Especially when talking about flux as it can be very dangerous.
Warning- Never let Flux sit on a board for more than 4 hours. The reason for this is flux contains chemicals that are highly corrosive when they hit room temperature. If you somehow forget (I probably would) to remove all the flux from a board it will begin eating it...think etching the board and you get the picture.
Victory!
As Mr. Riggs points out, it's just that one chip. It's the mask ROM.
The other small chip is the CIC for region locking, which is exactly the same as the CIC chip in the donor board, so no need to swap that chip.
I love how excited you got when you realized you fixed it.
(Looks up Chew Chew Mimic)
Not gonna lie, the song that plays throughout the game is pretty good John : ). Hopefully I'll remember to add this one to the Nintendo Switch eShop Wishlist next year when it gets released for it.
The moment in less then a second when you removed that ring Your face said it all brother BUMMER! lol Thanks for the video good stuff.
Happy Thanksgiving, John!
Pronunciation of ‘solder’ kills me every time! 😂
Learned something new with that video, thanks!!
I would not tough the flux with bare hands....
Great video!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving John
John Riggs for the win congratulations and Happy Holidays
Yes,your white board, wait, forehead is a great background. Thank you Riggs! Straight up cart surgeon.

This was my favorite game back in the day.
Brasso > Brite boy
Use magic eraser for residue.
Or 320 grit paper.
Let's go Riggs! I'm rooting for you to fix this one cause that's one of my fav games. Will check back in after I finish watching the video
edit: and.. you fixed it!!!!! woohoooo
That's a funny coincidence. I just picked up Goemon 3 for the Super Famicom and I had to open it up to clean it. There was some black residue running across above the pins where the cartridge made contact with the board (probably some kind of spill) which may have interfered or shorted the connections. Cleaned that up and it works fine.
Nicely done John!
Possible you could have saved the original board. Could have been a broken trace that was able to be fixed by scraping back the solder mask and jumping the break with a small wire. Also the board that lost the ring from the through hole could have been salvaged by jumping the pin on the chip to the trace that originally connected to the ring.
Learned something new, thank you 🙏
looks like severe corrosion on the contacts rather than just dirt or oxidisation.
I had a Lolo 3 board that looked like that. I had to sacrifice an American Gladiators to swap boards and save it.
Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving and ate a lot!😋 I just saw the trip to Syracuse, NY with MJR and it was awesome. Thanks to you I know about this expo I'll be on the lookout for it. In Rochester you missed Game Craze retro videogames store. I enjoy these open cart surgeries. Have you ever tried to save a Neo Geo cartridge? Anyway good showing and cool video John!👉🙂👈
Love Open Cart Surgery
I always love mike from star tropics picture love it
Little Caesars is tasty. Hey Little Caesars! Sponsor John Riggs! Pizza and video games! Make him a millionaire!
I wish Konami would make a Goemon Collection like they did for Castlevania & Contra 😢
If you need to apply flux to the board use a matchstick. Just light the match first and break the tip off before using it so there isn't an accidental fire. You can use just about anything other than your finger to apply it. You can never have to much flux as long as you don't feel like you are wasting it. It's better to have too much than not enough. The board essential just needs to be wet. Then clean it with IPA after you are done because flux can corrode the board if it isn't cleaned off.
I usually use a toothpick or a qtip to apply flux.
Only 5 bucks signed? Seems like a steal!
Fluxes for soldering not for sucking the solder out what you're using now is fine the gun to suck out the solder but if you want to solder you use the flux it cleans the pens and it makes the solder suck right to the pins and stick
I love open cart surgery
good job!!
My favorite snes game. I even like it better than the sequels under the original Ganbare Goemon name. Eve the artwork in the cart hits me with nostalgia. One of the better examples of westernized cover art. Translation sucked tho 😅
This was one of my lucky finds back in the day I got it for 1.99
Dumb open cart question for Riggs and the chat, I recently bought a copy of Simon's Quest for the NES. I cleaned the cart like I always do, popped it in the retron5, and the cart doesn't work. However, when I take the casing off of the chip and just put the naked board in my retron5, it plays fine. So, it doesn't seem like a hardware error. Is it possible that for some reason the pins sit too high up in the cart housing to make a solid connection on the retron5? I haven't tried the cart in my original NES yet, because I'm lazy, but I generally use my retron anyway. No big deal obviously, as I can play it regardless, more so just a mystery I'd like to solve.
Dr Riggs
Woohoo!!!
I still have all my old snes and nes games probably 64 too friends keep telling me to sell them 😆
👍👍™️

Please just play the quarterback club game instead. Who cares if football games don’t age well. It’s football. Nuff said
I like the cut of your jib Riggs
