A giant fan of Bartok, I've never like this piece till I heard this performance.
It is still the best interpretation I've ever heard.:)

This is an absolutely amazing interpretation which i had never heard before I wonder if any other pianist can do any better in matter of rhythm, density, with air coming in through, air vanishing out and this overwhelming power that pervades through out. Can you tell me if Zoltán has recorded the Microcosmos, which i . Thanks for this download .

A parlagfűben elbújva ettük a darazsas kukucskát és a hangyás papsajtot.
Másztunk fára (máséra is), bújtunk árokba, gödörbe. Estünk és keltünk. Sőt gáncsoltak is, mégis eljutottunk valahová.
Ha esett a hó, ettünk belőle.
Ha eső, volt, hogy abból is.
Utána a pocsolyákban játszottunk. Ha kezdte felszárítani a nap, akkor a cserepesre száradt sárban. Ha mélyebb volt és hamarabb poshadt, akkor abban.
Ha permeteztek, kicsit jobban megtörőltük a gyümölcsöt. Ha kiírták, hogy permetezve, tudtuk, hogy nem is vigyáznak rá!
Ha láttunk utcai kutat, ittunk. A csőréből. Egymás után mind. Aki nem tudta lenyomni, annak nyomtuk. Nem volt aki nem tudott inni és nem volt akinek nem volt a nyála rajta!
Ha megvágtuk magunkat, lenyaltuk a vért. Ha fájt, csak egyedül sírtunk, mások előtt nem.
Ha valami megcsípett, agyonnyomtuk.
Ha kutya megharapott, máskor elkerültük.
Ha tehettük, harcoltunk más gyerekcsapatokkal.
Ha többen voltak, inkább fociztunk.
Amire "kértek", mindent megcsináltunk otthon. Nem azért mert szerettük volna, hanem mert tudtuk, utána mehetünk csavarogni!
Gazoltuk a kertet. Etettük az állatokat.
Ha pollent, vagy port szívtunk lenyeltük, vagy kiköptük.
A cserebogár nem egy óriásrém volt számunkra, hanem a nyár kezdete! Kipiszkáltuk a "lyukából" és a markunkban tartottuk, hogy csiklandozza. A lótetűt a tyúkoknak dobáltuk, azok meg mindig összevesztek érte.
Annyi krumplibogár volt körülöttünk a bokrokon, mikor kézzel szedtük (nem permetezve volt akkoriban), hogy Spilberg sírt volna kameráért ha látja!
Örültünk ha a tojást csupasz kézzel még melegen vihettük be az ólból a házba és kesztyűből is csak télit láttunk, eszünkbe sem jutott nyáron, kesztyű!
Ha "vágás" volt a háznál, mostunk belet, ettünk sült vért. Ha szüret, akkor meg ittunk mustot hasmenésig.
Ha zöld volt a gyümölcs, zölden ettük. Ha megérett, akkor úgy is jó volt!
Ha elpusztult egy állat elástuk a kert végében és nem jött érte senki. Kis kedvenceinknek mind nevet adtunk és velünk éltek életük végéig.
Emlékszünk rájuk örök életünkben.
Nem volt edzőcipőnk, szandálban szaladgáltunk a fűben is és a kövek között is. Ha megvágta, vagy megszúrta a lábunkat egy rozsdás vas vagy szög, kaptunk egy tetanuszt. Vagy nem.
És az a vas hol van? Már rég nincs. Mi meg itt vagyunk. Helye sem látszik már, csak emlékszünk rá! Miért? Mert erősít!
Ha leégetett a nap, sziszegtünk. Begyógyult.
Ha megtaknyosodtunk, kaptunk zsebkendőt és azzal jártunk iskolába!
A legtöbben tudunk tüzet "rakni"! Hajaj, van aki nagyon.
Hordtuk a szenet, vágtuk a fát, szedtünk szálkát! Mondjuk azt nem szerettük. Nem kellett jelezni, az autók kikerültek.
Aki megtanult a 28-as biciklivel elindulni, az jutalmul akkortól vihette az öccsét, vagy húgát óvodába vele!
Minden ami kölyökként a levegőn minket ért, az erősített.
A levegő nekünk a legjobb élvezet!

Nem könnyű zene, de benne van a magyar lélek, meg ti lányok, idegen földön, hazagondolva, boldogan, szomorúan, hadakozva, keményen dolgozva, lágy , okos, szép lényeteket sugározva. /Bocs , de ez tényleg most így jött ki / Ölellek benneteket szeretettel, s várunk mindig haza titeket!

For me, 'Out of Doors' is a very ironic title. These wonderful explorations are best appreciated indoors, with closed eyes - are they not?
But referring to material as if it would have been taken from the outside.
Heard this played live even more expertly and convincingly by András Schiff. The Night's Music movement in particular was spellbinding.
If you like your Bartok without a hint of true darkness - and percussiveness, pianistically speaking - then Schiff's your boy for sure
When I came home after the concert I rushed to the computer to find this piece I was so impressed by. Only found Kocsis version, no Schiff. It sounded mechanical and dispassionate compared to what I had just heard live.
I imagine we can all relate to that, live performances can be powerful in ways that recorded music cannot. But personally I like Bartok to sound angular and somewhat percussive, and Schiff - a superb, incredibly cultured musician - sure doesn't so those. Of the performances of this work I'm familiar with my favorite is by the French pianist Claude Helffer. Would love to hear either of the Soviet masters Richter and Vedernikov (who recorded a superb Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion) have a go at it but sadly neither had recorded it.
Never heard Helffer, thanks for the mention. I'm pretty familiar with Schiff's work and I must say he's probably the pianist I most trust. He's been vocal about the importance of studying the life and historical context of the composer and the piece and I always feel that with him the composer's intentions are being respected (to the best of the available knowledge and documents). I'm sure he'd be the first to point out Bartok's angularity and percussiveness over a timid, by-the-book approach (in fact he says something close to that in a Bartok-themed conversation on Israeli tv). Schiff (like Kocsis) also has the advantage of being Hungarian which must facilitate the understanding of Bartok's ethnological, folk-based language and guarantee a less foreign approach.
It is a little dry in the middle movements. A little more haste than necessary.
But overall excellent piano playing. Well done

I've never understood what those abstract "Musettes" would intend to reflect.. That's maybe why there is so many differences between performances... and that's maybe why the piece has obsessed me so many times.
