I watched it about 10 times and went to the gym today (I'm not even a white belt) I cleared the neck and put my opponent into the mat but couldn't remember the rest. I'm a newbie so I'm sure anyone can learn this provided they have the flexibility.

eddies techniques is sooo fucking raw. my lockdown game is so tight im not even allowed to use it anymore in class. and its amazing how much people play into the setup, thinking being in my half guard is a priority position. half guard- lockdown- underhooks- whip- electric chair... game over man!
I actually just started doing Jiu-Jitsu full-time a year and a half ago, I'm one of the most flexible practitioners at our 10th Planet Academy so my coach really pushed me to try the rubber guard. And meant it has changed my game and it ended up becoming my go-to when I'm in full guard
If you ever roll you’ll understand what he has done, again no one denies that these submissions existed, what he made is a clear path for people to go down and switch between each one for attacks, he brought order to the chaos of BJJ.
Awesome video. I'm a big guy, but I'm pretty flexible and hopefully I can surprise some people by using rubber guard. This has definitely given me a better understanding of what to think about and work towards when I'm in it. Thanks!
I have watched this video several times this week and I thought I was going to be quite good at it, I have just rolled and i am terrible at it!! He makes it look so easy and simple
I self taught myself everything, i didn’t have an instructor and this system allowed me to learn things in a smart progression, so yes the chaos of jiujitsu.
Awesome stuff. Love the constant pressure from every position. I especially like the detail of the forearm in the collar bone from mission control and the overhook swim to get rid of the opponent's right arm. Clever.
My coach got so annoyed when I put someone into rubber guard while rolling. He claims the position is too vulnerable to headbutts. I'm disappointed in him because I think in any position you have to control space, so why not learn how to do so in rubber guard... but there's nowhere else to train in my town so I'll just keep watching these lol.
+ikano BG my coach saw me grabbing my shin for rubber guard in gi class and said you dont need to do that. just grab the gi. i dont think he likes 10th planet stuff
***** Same here, I like the gi because I am still new and it is more comfortable than sweaty skin, but I think holding onto the tradition comes at the cost of street effectiveness.
i love eddie's honesty regarding his weaknesses, because in the end... for admitting and identifying them he can ultimately make them stronger. just thought id share something i admire about him and his bjj.
man ive tooken 4 dif styles bjj thai bjkninjutsu and trained boxing at ctc miletech camp this guy is a good teacher 1 to be a good fighter 1 to be a goood teacher hes got great detail vocaly as well as demo answering most questions before chance to ask nice as a fighter i aprechiate this kinda talent only learned by passion to endure and persevere
i been training in BJJ for 3 weeks, and am having a grading nxt week and my tutor has told me to go for white belt yellow stripe red tape. and i always use rubber gurad :) so happy
What I love about rubber guard is the ability it gives me to avoid punches and other attacks as well as allowing me to escape from the bottom via omaplata whenever I need to and take side control. Works everytime :). Not to mention the incredible carnage you can inflict if it's a street fight by dropping elbows on the back of the head.. lights out.
It's a control position that offers easier access to a bunch of submissions, transitions and sweeps than closed guard. It's also safer and more controlled than playing open guard.
No ones denying that, jiu claw is the fight position everyone gets into going for the omoplata. He put a system of submissions around this, like the toe holds and armbar and transitions, thats the difference.
When I go for exams I usually do a lot of running as it warms the mind up, the brain is like a computer you have to get it awake. Think about it in the ancient past people had to be fit & read the land to hunt prey like the Kalahari bushmen today. Modern sports test a lot of those same skills like orientiering & Javaline.
Jiu claw is that position before the omoplata submission... Omoplata is that actual shoulder crank... Jiu claw is the control position assuming hes gonna attempt to escape.
@2fresh2defz that is very difficult - especially since more people are aware of rubber guard. They keep arms very tight to you can't get the hand to the mat. You can still move their arms in instead though and work from there
I'm entering a submission toureny. in 5 months ive never trained just going to do it from home been a huge fan of this for over 10 years i'm 6'7 and flexable and am useinog rubber guard alot and hopeing it will work against the novices in the tourney
bjj is about creating the right angle and space. Also not every move is intended for all shapes and sizes of people or opponents so just keep experimenting...or get someone to watch and tell you how to position yourself.
from my readings and understanding, he uses the terms to define position vs submission. He defines the position resulting from transition to an unfinished omoplata as "jiu claw" and the omoplata as a traditional submission. Maybe he just doesn't want to call it omoplata position because of subtle differences and wade into confusion with his students.
While Eddie did NOT create all of the moves, he did create many of them and did create them as a system of moves that can be sequenced together fluently.
after training 1 year of MMA i cant believe how much depth BJJ can have, using an escape to get a better position after fully controlling a technique out of a inferior submission ... wow, im amazed
@JTBCP I have long ass legs too man, I lock my guard with the body triangle as well. It is an advantage and disadvantage though, it keeps my guard tight but people will drive their elbows into my thighs and usually, I can just catch then in a triangle when that happens it is hard to get my legs out of the body triangle to catch them.
for all those asking and whining about who did and did not "create" the rubber guard, jiu claw etc , eddie created the rubber guard and all the moves and postions from there such as chill dog and jiu claw under the 10th planet jiu jitsu system which he founded!
+Cian Reidy take it slow. That's one thing I love about Eddie's stuff. You can sit in all of the holds. Like for me I went to spider gaurd pulled the guy in to a closed guard, went to mission control, then set em up for an arm bar(didnt get that arm bar, but it all worked well). And you can just stop and take a few seconds at each of those positions.
@y2taner i grapple with my brother who is about 7 inches taller than me. Im getting him in rubber guard all the time. The trick is to use your foot on his hip to push him down so you can get your other leg up to his neck. It definitely is harder to get rubber guard on taller opponents though.
He didn't invent the physical move of the rubber guard. He did however really develop it further, creating new techniques from the rubber guard and becoming THE master of the rubber guard.
I feel pretty bold writing anything on this video, but once someone rolls out of the omoplata you can get an arm-bar..it is a little lower and takes some reajustment, but its there. I'm sure a ton of people know that though INCLUDING EDDIE BRAVO!!!!
Yes but what you missunderstood is that I am talking about jour joints. If the joint is too flexible it will significantly reduce your ability to produce strength in that given joint. Not always the case offcourse but its usually a tradeoff.
this is great the only problem i see in the system is that it was designed with his own body in mind. thankfully I've got his body type but I can't help but feel there are gonna be some big guys out there that can't apply some of these principles because of the body type difference. other than that seeing the system is like eddie pretty much telling you his game. and having eddie bravos arsenal in your arsenal would make you one step closer to super sayan.
@KYNCarena Amatuer in MMA but advanced Jiu Jitsu comp. I've worked with a student of BJ penn who is also a black belt, I've worked with state champion wrestlers, I've worked with 10th planet guys. I've worked with a guy who holds two BJJ black belts.
If you're self taught, then you didn't watch Eddie Bravo, or any BJJ instructor. If you watched videos and practiced, then you were video taught. The only person who was self taught, was Carlos Gracie, the creator of the style. And that in itself was a spin off of Japanese Jiu Jitsu
During Abu Dhabi (2003) semi-finals Eddie's rubber guard was useless and Leo Vieira won easily by points (14x0) and Eddie claimed an injury (Forfeit) when facing "Soca" at the same event.
i believe that his flexibilit is insane and not many people can really master the rubber guard like he does. on the other hand..too much flexibility means your boy will have a trade off for strength. meaning, your strength will be reduced.
That is true because anything ending with a "do" like judo or kendo is a very non combative approach derived from the old arts that were banned in Japan such as jujutsu and kenjutsu.
10 years later and I’m still blown away by Eddie bravo
