    2001-2005 BMW 325i Expansion Tank removal and replacement
    2002 BMW came in with an antifreeze leak
    Luckily for the owner this is a serviceable part however its not always so easy when dealing with old plastic and dried out O-rings! Not to mention the replacement part is aftermarket! Wish me the best and follow along as we tackle yet another job that has a few hurdles

    Finding the leak was easy enough. Getting to the part, a little more difficult, then comes the details. That's where you shine. Making sure everything fits as it should and even securing the air box as an extra step. Nice.

    I had the same exact problem, vest part it stops leaking at a threshold where it doesn't overheat, imma get one tomorrow but 8 hours driving with that busted tank, only thing I'm losing is my heater at the moment. I'm amazed with this cars ability to keep going, no matter what's wrong with it. As though it's engineered to fail

  • @beauxdid7996

    Not to be mean but to inform everyone watching this video there is a high level and low level indicator in expansion tank that should never be overlooked. Should never overfill "top off" past the high level mark. Overfilling will decrease the life of the overall system and possibly cause a failure. If your having overheating issues this could cause a catastrophe. The expansion tank needs the air gap for expansion during normal operation as the fluid will be retained there. You certainly don't want a hose to burst as you will have only seconds to pull over to shut the engine off. Robinson...please edit video warning your viewers to fill properly and possibly saving someone grief. I like your video and wish you well, thx. Oh and btw a good mechanic showed me how to use a silicone lubricant from a spray can to make those pesky orings snap into place very easy. Worth the 3 dollars to have around.

    Hey Will, Astro Pneumatic 78585 is a coolant kit that I just picked up for about $200. It has the pressure testing adapters but also has a vacuum fill ability which draws air from cooling system allowing for a quick fill without running the engine to remove air pockets.

    It's a Dorman product, I'd have been shocked if it actually worked right out of the box. As soon as you said Dorman I smelled trouble. Can't say I'm too impressed with the BMW hose design. Typical engineers, take something simple and complicate it. Thanks for the video.

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  6 лет назад +1

      Just my personal thoughts and experiences. I honestly still keep my faith in Dorman products, I don't keep up on everything but from the little i know is: they are primarily based in the USA they private label for many companies and they invest millions of dollars a year in the automotive industry. Not to mention they employee thousounds of people here in the us! While giving us options. To me that's worth something! Sure at times something might not fit 100% but for the most part it dose the job. A lot of people would be suprissed who's products are really under that private label. Is anything really OEM? If it's not old new stock? From that model year/month

    • @AP9311
      @AP9311 6 лет назад

      robinsonsauto that is very true. But I have had few bad experiences with Dorman brands. That's why I don't have much faith on that brand. I can see why Eric O says same thing as well

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  6 лет назад

      Josh Benney understandable, it's the "Dorman" parts we use under different labels that many turn a blind eye to because we are not aware and consider a good part that conflicts. that's all

    Don’t get it twisted sometimes the visual inspection it’s not what it seems, my friend was adding coolant without a funnel so she dripped it all over the reservoir .. I thought it was the top hose ,changed it but it still leaked a lot ,took it to our European specialists ,they changed the water pump ,cost us $800 still was leaking ,they said the thermostat leaks I changed it myself, still leak , changed all hoses than it leak even parked whole gallon of distilled water came out even engine was off so I went get pressure tester (was waiting when you bring it up 😅👌🏼) and it was leaking in the middle of engine i lift the car and when i was under the car it leaked in the middle so difficult to diagnose so I did research because I changed everything even reservoir and radiator.. well it was the heater coolant hoses under the manful over $1200 at bmw it’s 2005 bmw x3 no worth it they charge my friend already $1200 for starter 🤪 so I just spent 14 h to taking the manful out all so bridle 200 k on this car 👵 😂 3other hoses broke while taking it off so tomorrow going to sears it’s just vacuum hoses and air intake that i need to buy .. the 2 hoses which leaked were broken off in the engine so no wonder it was coming all straight out ! I had to scrape the cooked hose with both O’rings out and the new hose doesn’t fit so tomorrow i sand it … I watched RUclips videos and this apparently happens around 200 k miles it’s 💩 job a lot break become more expensive at dealership probably $2000 + better buy newer car before that 😅🚗 I got mercedes 170 k so far nothing the bmw fixing everything since I bought it … just wanted to share today’s experience and that what you don’t do your self you don’t get done right these guys saying 60 y experience better 3 of them but didn’t fix the leak I did and I’m not mechanic, did it on parking lot even rain ☔️ had to take 1h break because of that but needed to recharge lol finished at midnight with flag light 😝

    You missed a bunch of things, you got to bleed the system out and Jack the car up on the driver side so it tilts to one side. You over filled the tank now there's no where for the fluid to go to and it will probably break something else. Didn't check the water inlet pipes

    I have a 2007 335i with 154,000 miles. I just had the radiator replaced about a month ago and today I had the low coolant light come on. I was informed the radiator had a crack and that's why the coolant was leaking before I had the radiator replaced. Now I am wondering what the issue is. There doesn't seem to be any noticeable leaks.

    Great video Will! You’re keeping everything professional as usual,unlike some others that can’t wait to tell us how bad these European vehicles are and how they hate working on them. Sorry for the trouble you had with the leaks. I would never install a Doorman part on an European vehicle unless they make a repair kit on something that fixes a part which would require a ridiculous amount of money to replace. But I do understand it’s not up to you when it comes to the parts you’ve used. I tell you it’s the tolerances when it comes to aftermarket parts. You can usually reuse those O-rings if they’re still pliable and haven’t been damaged while removing.
    Thanks for the video! 👍👍👍

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  6 лет назад +1

      Nick Nicu thank you for the kind feedback! I agree with you 100% the tolerances were different on the Dorman part! Many times I have reused o-rings without fail. would have been nice to take a measurement. This happens so often anymore I just work through it but it is very frustrating. I know for next time 🍻 I'm sure we will hear less and less of the complaining now that most modern cars are cramed in like a Sardine Can and use plastic everything lol 😂 I enjoy working on Euro I don't get many in so it's something new most times. Great video but correct me if i am wrong but with any vehicle, dont it have to be running with the heater set to wide open to get it completely full and then Burp/bleed it? Just for fun............Its Raid iator not Rad iator, keep up the great videos.

    Hey Will these Bmw's can be very challenging to bleed the air out of the coolant system.
    There are a couple of bleed screws one on the top hose and one on the expansion bottle.
    However overpriced hoses on these German buckets of crap.
    Nice video Thanks.

      You can easy spend an hour trying to get the air out of these.
      The older ones with normal hose clips are just as much fun too.

      Nick Dont judge to harshly 😂 "Pittsburgh automitive" a few months back I had a car come in with a minor leak and of course I didn't have the correct adapter!!!! Called around no one had one local so I sent Tammy to harbor freight in a ditch effort and she came back with this nifty kit!! I gotta admit it's paid for itself already and still works

    • @comingundone27
      @comingundone27 6 лет назад

      I can not judge you at all! It has a BMW adapter that my kit doesn't have. I might have to look into picking one up myself!

    All of the BMWs that I have had, have ended up having coolant leaks... their coolant system is very weak/cheap... the plastic is cheap quality and weak and always ended up breaking...

  • @gunterhuber7053
    @gunterhuber7053 3 года назад

    Just to say.....Why did you not hook up the pressure tester before you even took anything apart? It would have saved you a lot of time. The thermostat you are talking about ...is for the transmission oil ..its not for the engine coolant..i think you should have mentioned that. Also, you use a fluid extractor and about 5 min into the video...you are talking about the radiator drain plug.. You should have used that and you would not have the mess Anyway, your video is almost 30 min long....its about a 20 min repair
