  • Fly line tapers can be seen as a bit of an arcane science and it's not uncommon for us to buy the wrong one for our fishing. In this video I'm going to get into some detail on how tapers and other line characteristics affect our casting and our fishing. Armed with the information, you'll be in a better position to buy your next fly line.

    This stuff is overwhelming at times. There's so many different lines. Part of me is more confused than ever, but I'm also learning from videos like this.

      I forgot to mention back when we discussed this topic that I already have some Spey line videos up on YT. They're a few years old, but they're still relevant.

    I just got into fly fishing, and will be fishing a big river where I’ll be casting some what far with a wet fly or streamers. All the trout are 19 to 25 inches long and give up a good fight. What would be a good line to buy for what I’m looking at? Also your videos have been really helpful for me in tying files and gathering information for fly fishing. Thank you for your time

    • @hooked4lifeca

      For streamers and wet flies on a big river, I'd typically use a slow sinking intermediate line like the Airflo Beach Clear. As you are just starting out, a slightly overweight floating line like the Airflo Xceed, might be a better first choice from a handling and casting perspective.
      Here's two videos on fishing intermediate lines: ruclips.net/video/bRiJO3qpD7k/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/COaU-klHGDM/видео.html
      Ideally you should consider having one of each.

    What do you think about the airflo bandit? It’s also heavy at front of the line similar to Rio gold What type of leader set up will you do with bandit line? Will I be able to cast a 12 feet leader for dry fly?

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  3 года назад +1

      Casting a 12' leader with that line should be no problem at all. I use 11' to 12' leaders routinely in my dry fly fishing. Typically I'd take a 9' 5X mono leader and attached 2' to 3' of 6X or 7X fluorocarbon tippet.

    Can a long front taper turn over those air resistant streamers or strictly for light presentations like dry flies?

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  2 года назад +1

      It's difficult to get a finely tapered line to turn over large, wind resistant flies, especially when encountering headwinds.

    People not using double taper cause airflo discontinued the production of these beautiful lines double tapers. The industry is creating problems for the loyal customers that had used the products and then these companies discontinued for the sake of making it easy for new customers get in the sport and profit. Same goes with the two pieces fly rods they are discontinued and companies are making these awful 4 pieces fly rod just for the sake of money, sad.😢

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  Год назад

      Unfortunately manufacturers need a certain volume of sales for a product line to keep making it. If the product sales fall below that threshold, it will be discontinued. A company can't remain in business making products that people won't buy.

      Forgot to mention that Northern Sports of Guelph, Ontario makes AquaNova budget fly lines for other companies. They still offer DT trout sized fly lines with nice, long front tapers for good presentation. They don't sell retail directly so their products have to be purchased through a retailer. The First Cast fly shop in Guelph, Ontario sells their lines and they will ship them.

      @@hooked4lifeca I know I just wanted to put t out there perhaps companies become aware that products we would love to use for ever specially ones you master the skills of the specific line or fly rods. For example I love the old airflo lines but now they are selling lines with thin diameter for long distance but not everyone fish long miles away well maybe in USA, I am a close contact fisherman and love the feel of the old lines. By the way Rio is doing the same thing and TFO also discontinued the BVK fly rods , and I would not certainly pay double the price nowadays for less quality. There for I buy cheap lines then I weld them as you do😉
