  • In this episode of RIO's "How To Fly Fish" series, RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth talks about fishing intermediate lines in a lake. The intermediate line should be the second line density every lake angler should buy (after a floating line), but few anglers know how to fish them, or the nuances behind using them.
    Simon explains what an intermediate line is, talks about when to use a clear versus a "camo" intermediate line, as well as discussing the sink rate that makes the line an "intermediate". In this video, packed with tips for the lake angler, Simon also shows how to fish the "washing line" and the "hang", and runs through a couple of excellent tips that, if you are new to fishing intermediate lines, will really help your day.
    Clearly explained in Simon's easy-going, simple-to-understand style, this is an excellent film for anyone who fly fishes in lakes - packed with great information and tips.
    RIO's "How To Fly Fish" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

    Best explanation I've seen yet for fishing an int line & washing line method with weighted buzzer. Thank you Simon, best yet.

    Best explanation of an intermediate fly line. It has become my most used line for Pike fishing, so much control and works on so many venues, from canals to rivers.

    Fantastic video!!! I learned so much from it. There aren't any streams or rivers near me, so I'll be fishing lakes most of the time. Now I know how to fish them. Thanks again.

    Would u recommend a intermediate over a sinking line? For lake fishing! I don’t usually fish lakes only a few times over the winter when the river season is finished, ive a spare spool but can’t decide to buy an intermediate or sinking line , ive only a floating line atm which I use for wild brown trout in the river

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  2 года назад +1

      We would recommend a type 3 sinking. Super versatile lake line, especially if it's your winter season, plus you can use it in rivers during heavier flows to fish streamers.

    What happens to the booby when you use the intermediate? Does it sink at some stage because the intermediate line pulls it down?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  10 месяцев назад

      It will sink! It may take second as the intermediate line is not incredibly heavy. But, it will give the flies you've tied above it incredible sub-surface action!

    What is the leader construction is it tapered or just mono?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  Год назад +1

      You could do either! We usually recommend using a powerflex 12ft in 2x or 3x to assist in turning over flies, then adding tippet on to that from a tippet ring. Cheers!

    Are intermediate lines only used on lakes, not on rivers ???
    I ask because I never used one.

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  2 года назад +1

      You can use them on rivers, they just don't last as long being dragged along the river bottom. Great way to fish smaller streamers, or sculpin patterns.

      Thank you. I had in mind using a intermediate with a bigger nymph, for instance stonefly, or small streamer, and fish it on the swing like a salmonfly.

    Good effort, but too much jabber. Ha ha. You missed the rising fish at 3 o'clock 12 min 45 secs. Ha ha!
