  • In this episode of RIO's "How To Fly Fish" series, RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth talks about trout fly rods, and how to choose the right one. This video is designed to aid the novice fly fisher in selecting the most appropriate sized fly rod for them - based on water size, and fish size.
In this film, Simon only focuses on the rod length and rod/line size differences, and explains when to use a short fly rod, versus a long one, as well as discussing the merits of the rod/line size according to the type of water to be fished, and the size of the trout that are expected (hoped to be) to be caught.

RIO's "How To Fly Fish" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

Hi Simon, I have fly fished for 50 years and I love you video. Just a very tiny point….. I agree a 5# is a general rod however on occasions a 6# is more of a work horse than a 5#. The reason being that if you fish the Tweed in Scotland …… you don’t know what you are going to catch.
Anyway, great video, just think you should up to a 6 … that’s all my friend. Kind regards.

Great video, very helpful and thank you. I'm now going to buy a 10ft 6wt rod for a very large open reservoir. What reel would you reccommend?

What kind of boat is Simon using? I am looking for an inflatable boat for lake fly fishing... might be a good video.

Well this is good to know, wish I would have watched this before I bought my rod lol. The salesman talked me into a 10ft but at least it's a 5 weight. I thought it was a 7 for a long time but I just double checked. Got a Loomix IMX-Pro and a Sage Spectrum 5/6 reel and I think Rio gold weight forward floating line.

I have watched your video many times. Whilst you are correct in many aspects, you have failed to cover everything. How much time did you allocate to a 4#.
Did you explain in detail regarding the length v # …. I’ll help you here, you did not.
I have been fly fishing for 50 years.
Look, you are clearly a decent man.
As they used to say in the era of 1970
    Do your homework.
This is no reflection on you, just that you are a recent contributor to fly fishing.
I wish you well my friend.
    As always, kind regards.

I realize you wanted I keep things simple, but you didn’t touch on rod flex which I would think is an important consideration…

It certainly is, and probably should have been added. Thanks.
