@bradsmith4093 Thanks so much! Awesome! I use a variety of shelters in the winter. It is mostly dependent on the location and conditions. I usually bump things up a little in terms of fabric thickness for the time of year for the additional abrasion/puncture resistance. I still enjoy using a tarp at times if it's appropriate, and will go with one that's a little larger like a 9'x9' or 8'x10'. In mild or protected areas, I may use a 3-season tent like my Hyperlite Mountain Gear Dirigo 2 or Zpacks Plex Solo. In really harsh conditions, I've been using a Mountain Hardwear Direkt 2. I put together a video going over some of the gear I use in winter which you can find here if interested: ruclips.net/video/09-r21oFlOk/видео.html. Happy hiking!
@@papajeff5486 Thank you! MYOG has been fun and with its challenges too of course. I’m looking forward to continued growth with what I come up with and make. It’s a rewarding feeling carrying and using something you made out on the trail. Thanks for watching and thank you for your service. 🙏
I absolutely love and appreciate your giving the internal capacity of the pack plus the external. So it's clear exactly how many litters the pack is. Thank you!
Congrats on all the MYOG success and continuing to optimize your kits. Love your "matter of fact" style and appreciate hearing the rationale for each choice. Keep up the great work! Ps. Do you take orders? 😉
@@KevinRStrauss Thank you! It’s been fun dialing things in even more and drawing up some of the ideas I have. Looking forward to putting more of those projects together. I’m happy you enjoyed the video. I’m not setup for any orders yet, but quite possibly in the near future 🙂.
Super about making your own gear. I am truly impressed. MYOG, I bet Ray Jardine would be impressed too. Question. On a moderate night, what do you sleep in?
@@jhonyermo Thank you! Ray Jardine has always been an influential part of my hiking style. On a thru-hike, I'll always carry a designated short sleeve sleep shirt like a Patagonia Lightweight Capilene or even one of the Old Navy shirts in this video would work. Then layer my fleece over if needed. For bottoms, I usually have just worn my wind pants. Something like the Montbell Tachyon or Patagonia Terrebonne joggers. On shorter trips that are a few days in length, I'll typically just sleep in my hiking clothes. Since I’m using a quilt, I like to wear a beanie too.
@@surfandstreamfisher5749 Absolutely! I have plans to make a tarp and also a tent. Next on my project list is a pullover Alpha Direct Wool fleece with button snaps.
great job on the backpack and hats
Great vid, thanks Matt ! I’m keen to do more winter hiking this year. What tent/shelter do you use for winter, particularly if you’re hiking on snow?

Good on you w/ the MYOG!

MAT, good on you for making your own gear! Seems like a great backpack. Like the beanie. Great new gear. …from an OLD war veteran, retired in the US.

Hi Mat, any plans to sew a tarp?
