  • From what is generally acknowledged to be the first build of fully cellular container ships over 1000 teu, the first of the class to go to scrap at Alang breakers in India. 4 of the 5 sister ships had been re-engined to more economical diesel engines but the Flinders remained as steam turbine to the end. The 6th ship of the class, the Jervis Bay had been previously lost during a storm on Bilboa breakwater whilst undertow to the breakers.
    Launched July 1968 Hamburg
    Beached October 1996 Alang
Built for the Europe to Australia and later also New Zealand trades, the ship spent all her life back and forth on these runs.
Apologies for the quality - a colleagues 1990's video camera.

Was a wonderful life working on the bay boats, just wish i had the brains to realise it at the time. Got 9 great trips in before my youthful brain fucked it for me. Many fond memories RIP Tony " Abdul " weathrall and big Gus the jock.

Sailed on the Encounter, Botany, Flinders, Discovery, Jarvis Bay in the seventies. Good times.

I sailed on the Flinders as a deck cadet from Sept 79 to March 1980. The best of all the ships I served on. I think John Lay (not sure of spelling) was 1st officer and went on to be the master in '82 - Best guide and mentor I had.

My first voyage with OCL was second voyage on Flinders Bay. Sailed on the others as time past apart from Jervis. My great friend John Fee was Master on Falmouth Bay when it nearly founded in the Nth Atlantic. John never really recovered from that voyage and died last year with so many health problems. The best of times with the best ship master/handler I could ever sail with, Mike Heron. John and I were taught so much by this exceptional man.

An amazing 'story' and really enjoyed viewing this - a great many thanks to the person who did all the filming and entered it on this Site! Just had a look in my Discharge Book and found I sailed on the 'Flinders' four times as R/O - the first in 1982, when we were strikebound in Sydney for something like three weeks - my Wife-to-be very worried that I was not going to make it home for our wedding on the 10th, July! I always remember receiving the Sydney Newspapers of a morning and everyone on board being particularly interested in the Falklands War reports which of course was going on at the time. In actual fact we all paid off in Genoa on the 2nd, June. On the final occasion, I think there was a full crew change in Barcelona in September, 1990 - and we left in Livorno on 2nd, December! 'Flinders' I always remember as having the reputation as one 'very happy Ship' - and this film bought back a lot of very happy memories of my time on board her!

I sailed on Discovery (steam) and Encounter back in early 90's the steam ships was very quiet but I preferred the diesels to be honest, was great to see them after all this time.

I did my one and only voyage on a cargo ship on board Flinders Bay, from Athens, Greece to Sydney, Australia in early 1985, accompanying the yacht Sothern Cross II which were transported on board as deck cargo. A great trip and a great experience. Sad to see Flinders Bay go to the scrap yard.

I did my first trip to sea on the Flinders Bay in December 1980, we got caught up in the seamans strike and ended up spending nearly 5 weeks alongside in Fremantle - happy days, very sad to see this.

My Dad, Glyn Davies served as 3rd Officer on this ship in the late 1970s. He was known as ‘Merlin’ and ‘Taffy’. I am trying to find any of his former crew for him to connect with as a surprise, if anyone here worked with him please comment. Much appreciated!

Great footage. Worked on ships in the 70.s but never took one to scrap. How many crew were on for the final voyage.? These ships seemed so big when first came out.. Seen most of the Bay boats from that time but never fancied working on container ships. Always thought the general cargo was going to be around forever. How wrong.!!! Great days though. Thanks for posting
