- You guys sent me a blog/article about the oat milk Oatly being as bad as coca-cola in terms of sugar and glycemic load so I had to investigate and get my blood glucose monitor out.

Even though chocolate oat milk has 16g of sugar per cup, Coke has 39g of sugar per cup and offers no nutrients. At least the oat milk offers some B12, calcium, vitamin D and protein for that. I have to disagree here, as you do have to take personal make up into account. I used to make coco with organic oatly, a dash of chilli and/or a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon everyday, occassionally twice a day. After some months, I noticed a tightness in my chest, and developed headaches. My doctor said that my blood sugar was way too high. I thought why would that be as I don't consume sugar, apart from starches in whole foods. I looked closer at oat milk and discovered it is indeed high in maltose and glucose. So I stopped that, within days I felt much better, within weeks my blood sugar was totally down.

This is so interesting. I’ve been monitoring my blood glucose for about a month just to test different foods. I’ve found that all the foods that I eat (mostly whole food carbs) that I thought were causing blood sugar spikes; are actually fine when I eat normal portions. I did intermittent fasting for a long time not realizing that I was causing my crashes with huge portions. So I actually thrive on whole food carbs but I just need to eat smaller portions. Thank you for turning me on to blood sugar monitoring. I feel like I’ve gained so much knowledge about body.
My fix is to eat a small to moderate amount of the carbs with either large amounts of fibrous, non starchy vegetables, a higher protein food, and/or some oil. When I do at least two of the former in combo with the carbs, I have no issues.
We have so many more Oatly varieties in Sweden and I really hope they come to you in the near future!
Most of these overpriced and hyped products are not popular, since people can not afford them outside Nordic countries. It's 2x - 3x the price of regular milk, even though it's plant based, which is very indecent.
Diss & Dad Plant based products might seem overpriced to consumers compared to animal based ones because the dairy and meat industry is heavily subsidised with our tax money in order to keep prices low. If in turn plant based products were subsidised in the same way, they would be a lot more affordable. And what is more, that subsidy would also help the environment instead of propping up a profoundly sick, unethical, exploitative and outdated system.
@@EspritundDisa That's a poor excuse for hipster companies like Oatly to demand extraorbitant amounts of money from the consumers for their low value products. Not to mention that commercial farmers who produce oats and other commercial grains benefit from the exact same subsidies as the dairy and meat producers. Don't let yourself be fooled by this nonsense narrative ("plant based products cost more, because meat and dairy is subsidised") which doesn't stand the test of scrutiny. Don't be THAT mindless fool.
Organic Oatly is my favourite!
@@EspritundDisa I agree, but since the op was talking about Oatly brand I'm gonna have to say it really way waaay too expensive in some countries. It's delicious but even vegans here don't buy it much because of how expensive it is sadly :/

I guess you might need something like Oatly if you drink coffee, but for a topping for berries and oats I simply blend some rolled oats with water and optionally some cacao powder. I don't even bother to strain it, so I'm retaining the fiber. Tastes fine (especially the chocolate version), extremely cheap, and takes literally seconds to make.
Tullochgorum I like to add a small drizzle of date syrup. Or Alpro soya yoghurt with a drop of vanilla.
Oats work decently with water alone. For a wheat-based breakfast cereal, you need something else as the flavor balance isn't quite right (not creamy enough). I use soymilk, but Oatly works decently also with oat-based breakfast cereals.
I just use steel oats in hot water with honey added with blue berries.
Thank you this is genius and will save me loads of money. Plant milks are very expensive
@@jeanhorseman9364 Yes - when you realise how little is in them, paying those prices is just silly.

I laughed so hard at Prick the Vegan xD Good Job brother, keep the videos coming
How could they possibly be sued for that!? It's insane. On what grounds would that be valid?
My thoughts exactly. I guess the notion that the dairy producers take the cow's milk and make it into a bottled product intended for humans it is for humans too in the eyes of the court who probably drinks it too. Frustrating.
@@MictheVegan then nothing can be advertised as "made for humans. That's a bit worrisome?

I'd say it's the daylight hours, a lack of vitamin D is a big cause of osteoporosis. (On top of obesity and lack of outdoor activity) It's a major reason why the US ,despite consuming 3 times the global recommended calcium, is very prone to Osteoporosis.
@@kevinroche835 The places with the highest dairy milk consumption have the highest rates of osteoporosis which may just mean correlation does not equal causation but it might be the milk itself paired with the horrible standard American diet of lots of meat, dairy, and eggs.
Also I've been told by my doctor that most people in the United States don't get enough vitamin D whether they eat meat, dairy, eggs or not and everyone should take supplements at least sometimes. The same goes for B12.
@Candid_Vegan Actually, Mike himself made a video about this claim (called something like vegan myths) and it's not correct. The most recent science now suggests that the reason for less bone density could be impaired blood flow to the bones because of high cholesterol / atherosclerosis. :)

As someone who makes plant based milks at home, as it's just cheaper, i've never successfully made oat/rice milk, despite trying different methods, unlike soy milk, it all just settles at the bottom with water on top. I suppose it's because of their starchy nature and i figured there is a specific process behind the production of one like ''Oatly''.
Well, at least soy milk never fails and you can make a lot of nice things with the okara that's left over. I wonder if some nut milks can be made at home properly, i happen to have a lot of peanuts with nothing to use em for, besides my morning smoothies.

Check out the channel “Sauce Stache” if you haven’t yet - specifically his video “How to milk everything the easy way.” It might be of help to you. :)
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Ye i know the guy, though i still haven't been able to mike oat/rice milks, with raw oats it just settles at the bottom with water on top, just like rice and doesn't retain the milky consistency soy does.
The starch just doesn't mix well with water, it quickly separates, would need something to turn it into sugar like they do with the store bought one, like malting to create a milky consistency.
@Kristers Krūka
Hmm, than how did the Stache man achieve his successful results then? Did he use a more powerful machine than you used, possibly?
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Well i have a professional blender where you can dial it up to crazy speeds, but the thing is, he didn't make rice milk in that video and i've tried his method(boiling rice) for a few times it still turns out very slimy and vague with poor taste. As for his oat milk, he didn't show it after the milk has stood still for an hour or two, after that time the mushed oat mass just settles at the bottom and it loses the milky texture you see when its fresh.

I'm watching this as I add oatly to my oatmeal 🥴
Fascinating video and thanks for posting it! In the UK we have an organic version of Oatly where they don't add anything other than 10% Oats, water and a pinch of sea salt. I think EU rules mean that as a condition of being labelled organic there mustn't be anything else added. So my organic Soya milk is just soya and water. I stopped drinking the Oatly though about a year ago as it was making me feel hyperglycaemic, which I confirmed by testing my blood glucose. That's probably just personal to me though. Thanks again Mic!
It's insane to me as a type 1 diabetic that people actually go over 144(8.0 in europe). I always thought non-diabetics always stayed between 72-126(4.0-7.0) I feel like I mess up as a diabetic when I go over 144(8.0) but seeing a non-diabetic go over that limit is really comforting in a way.
