What role can voluntary standards play in the context of supply chain laws? (WEBINAR)

“What role can voluntary standards play in the context of supply chain laws? That was the question Fairtrade tried to answer during our webinar on November 24, 2024. Speakers Pison Kukundakwe and Maame Abena Gyamerah gave important insights in the perspectives from producers and their governments in answering this question, and Juan Pablo Solis from the Fairtrade system gave further explanation from Fairtrade’s perspective.
As stated by Juan Pablo “Fairtrade standards are aligned with EU regulations. But Fairtrade is not just about compliance, it is about going beyond and working with retailers, traders and other operators to support producers’ efforts". Because as stated during the webinar, voluntary standards such as Fairtrade facilitate collaboration between stakeholders, encourage ongoing dialogue and the constant search of improvements. Their use in conjunction with regulations can be a powerful lever for promoting sustainable value chains, offering companies a pathway to work towards more responsible business practices.
