The Chinese toyed with Stalin’s economic model under Mao, and suffered a fiasco, as is the case of relying on Stalinism to build a socioeconomic system to compete with Wall Street and other rapacious capitalist economic models elsewhere on the planet. When the Chinese under Deng Siao Ping decided to revisit Lenin’s very successful New Economic Policy (NEP), the result has led to unprecedented economic growth in the People’s Republic over the last four decades. Lenin’s NEP is a little compromise with feudalism-capitalism for an indefinite transition stage, under communist party guidance, until science and technology help build the future hopefully exploitation-free society. Soviet and Russian leaders, from Stalin to Putin, as well as the prominent ideologues of this society since Stalin was denounced in 1956, have failed to appreciate the treasures embedded in NEP. Reviving and modernizing NEP, plus a firm management under a political leadership inspired by Leninist style of universal justice might have prevented the Soviet collapse, and even averted the current catastrophic path of wanting to reinstate a 19th century style Russian empire using armed force. Sovereignties instituted since the collapse of the USSR should be respected by all, and economic competition and mutual penetration should replace the crazy idea of wanting to rebuild old and discredited empires. The answer can be found in what the Soviets did in December 1979. And if you don't believe that, you may want to check the HISTORY of the nation that the Soviets invaded. Plain and simple.
Everything you've discussed in this , still occurs in not only Russia & it's former Soviet satellite states , it's also occurring all over Europe , America , Africa and Asia .
There are so many interpretations, but for political reasons, those reasons that make the least sense are accepted as "official". The USSR has collapsed for economic reasons, primarily. Secondary reasons would be logistical. The last would be political, those that are considered the most important by the general public, ironically. But this world is a sum of all narratives. What things look like on a surface is more important. You can always point a finger at a leader, at a particular party, but no one will talk too much about the roots.
I was reluctant to watch this, sceptical that it was unlikely to present a balanced account of the history. But I admit I was surprised and happily gave it a like. But of course, bias always creeps in even with the best intentions. I was particularly struck by this sentence from the presenter; "Putin seems to believe that Russia and its leaders have a blank cheque on which to draw to defend the interests of Russians even beyond its territorial boarders" Really, how unusual is this for a country? Please don’t tell me you don’t see the exact same belief in successive administrations of the USA going as far back as the Monroe doctrine and earlier. Even the PM of Australia recently said (with the support of the USA) that the Solomon Islands would be crossing a "red line", for which Australia would invade, if it allowed China to establish a base there. And the PM said this while he sent armaments to Ukraine ostensibly because he was affronted that Russia invaded "sovereign Ukraine” for seeking to become a NATO member. The presenter also spoke of Putin meddling in Ukraine and the rampant corruption in Soviet Russia as if this was a tendency peculiar to socialism or the Russian political framework. Really, no meddling in the affairs of Ukraine and a multitude of other countries by Capitalist USA, which must have the record for interfering in the sovereign affairs of nations since WW2. And don’t even start on the corruption, the oligarchs and nepotism in the USA and Europe that is threatening to dismembers the USA and is likely do so when the 2024 presidential elections come around. Alas, as I say, there is some bias but overall I would recommend this neat summery of the history of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
corruption is and has always been a LOT worse in communist countries man. because they're more authoritarian. which means it's more necessary and there are less alternatives to corruption. regardless of what ideology or how one may think the world works via their ideological lens, at the end of the day, game theory is the silent, continual "physics engine" for how humans behave under power dynamics. Greater authoritarianism always predictably pushes things in a known direction - corruption, loyalty, stronger carrot and stick, less protection of human rights and rule of law is by definition authoritarianism, and those very things incentivize corruption.
There was little difference between the Russian Empire and the Soviet Empire. The economic models and overwhelmingly bureaucratic inefficiency of of both condemned them,
The Soviet Empire was a centrally planned militaristic oligarchy held together by brute force over the corpses of more advanced, highly resentful East European nations. The byzantine bureaucracies that managed the economy were corrupt and inefficient. My economics professor from Hungary said that when shortages arose, the Soviet system was reactionary, not proactive. At one point 25% of Czech consumer manufacturing was churning out home appliances that were already unwanted and obsolete by the time they came off the factory floor. That would have bankrupted any American corporation and a more efficient competitor would have filled the void, but government plants can't go bankrupt and you aren't allowed to compete with a Socialist government. While East Germans watched over the Wall as their brothers and sisters drove Mercedes and worked in skyscrapers they drove "Volgas" or rode bicycles in a town that still had unrepaired bomb damage from 50 years back. The Soviet Empire built walls to prevent "Illegal Emigrants" from escaping. When your economy is eclipsed by Italy, you're doing something wrong. When the "Big Lie" of Communism couldn't be concealed anymore, revolution became inevitable.
Is global prestige actually a factor in people's life's ....been here on earth about 50 years working with people from everywhere in the world and I have never heard of anyone concerned with global prestige.......
Am so sorry too, a tragedy befall soviet Union,no problem life goes on,did America know this history? is unexpected tragedy ,this why they want to reclaim their land back.
Wondrium. Simple and good. Of course if Wondrium insists that there is ultimately a belief system under the gear of the historical facts you might also explain what is ultimately under the belief systems (which is not a belief system) as a gear.
I prefer to be kept under "tabs" by the free world than by a communist regime that needs to build a border fortification so deadly that no one can escape. No thanks...

So the choice was, keep giving most of the money to the Soviet satellite countries to keep them loyal, or keep that money at home to help the citizens. Gorbachev choose the citizens, and was the first and only russian leaser to do so. Putin doesn't let the state of his home economy play any part of his decisions. power at all costs....
Occupying countries is very expensive. Putin will find this out even if he can somehow take the Ukraine it will never be over. People do not understand Russia has a GDP just above Spain but with a lot more bills to pay.
Perhaps it wasn’t Brezhnev to blame, perhaps the main reason was that the Soviet union was based on an empire forced by conquest by the Czar so never really was on solid foundations to start with once the iron grip was released it was bound to fall apart

What do you need free speech for? Are you spreading hate speech against our dear leaders?
There are so many interpretations, but for political reasons, those reasons that make the least sense are accepted as "official". The USSR has collapsed for economic reasons, primarily. Secondary reasons would be logistical. The last would be political, those that are considered the most important by the general public, ironically. But this world is a sum of all narratives. What things look like on a surface is more important. You can always point a finger at a leader, at a particular party, but no one will talk too much about the roots.
I was reluctant to watch this, sceptical that it was unlikely to present a balanced account of the history. But I admit I was surprised and happily gave it a like. But of course, bias always creeps in even with the best intentions. I was particularly struck by this sentence from the presenter;
"Putin seems to believe that Russia and its leaders have a blank cheque on which to draw to defend the interests of Russians even beyond its territorial boarders"
Really, how unusual is this for a country?
@@gwho You need to remove your ideological lense, it can make you look silly.
They experienced the same every dictatorship has to eventually experience.

I won't even go there. The leaders are to blame. Watch it crumble again.
There was little difference between the Russian Empire and the Soviet Empire. The economic models and overwhelmingly bureaucratic inefficiency of of both condemned them,
That is still the case.
Gorbachev wanted to correct ussr but it back fired to dissolve soviet in 15 nations .
because the many could no longer afford the lifestyle of the very chosen few...
Of course if Wondrium insists that there is ultimately a belief system under the gear of the historical facts you might also explain what is ultimately under the belief systems (which is not a belief system) as a gear.

do not start world war three because o a tiny f Ukraine.it is not worth it we all going to die if nuke war starts Russia is our old friend he helped to win second world war and stopped Nazi win war in europe now Russia is in trouble we should help Russia bring peace to the planet earth .russia do not have a good negotiators with West we must respect each other and bad languages are not acceptable . From both sides.
People do not understand Russia has a GDP
just above Spain but with a lot more bills to pay.
Declared War was the same solution of what Roosevelt's was seeing
Perhaps it wasn’t Brezhnev to blame, perhaps the main reason was that the Soviet union was based on an empire forced by conquest by the Czar so never really was on solid foundations to start with once the iron grip was released it was bound to fall apart
Soviet nice
Never was so free as in Soviet Union...

Why does u tube feature this subject so much. Is it to get a crumb of comfort for all the American and West disasters that have gone on recently
You don’t find the largest and the post powerful Eurasian empire in history, one that finally settled the competition between settled people and nomadic horse riders, spanned enough land to have 11 time zones, put human in the space first, built up the most powerful army ever seen, going from the height of its power to an oblivion in mere decades fascinating?
Quite disappointed with this course. Correctly talked about Putin, but also ignored NATO expansion and Western provocation against Russia. Propaganda once again.

Is she a comedian or historian (of Cold War Era Left West Akademia@the motto: "better be red than dead")? An "internal" fight among gangsters is important but the most in this case of the Fall of the Red Empire. For example on Brezniev's Doctrine as if the only Gorbatchev ended it! Hm, Dec. 1980, President Carter telephoned directly Brzniev and warned about the consequences contra Solidarity in Poland (after the info from col. Ryszard Kuklinski, CIA agent in Warsaw Pact Headquarter; well, later before marshal Law, from Vatican (!)went out a leak, just 40 hours after JPII talk with Regan, that ....Regan warned JPII about Marshall Law soon, Dec.13,1981, then KGB in Warsaw knew: a spy is among us, learn more what then....!); anyway; Brezniev promised Carter: ok. no new Invasion (like in Tchechoslovakia, Budapest 1956; military troops were preparing for the invasion at that time). More; The formal dismantling of the Soviet Empie happened on Dec.8,1991 as Bibloviezha Accord and was only signed by 3-members of Soviet Republic: Russia, Ukraine, and Bialorus; the rest republic-still afraid of the Gulags of execution at that time!). There was a chain of causes, and events leading to the final Collapse of one of Many Devil's empires! RFE/FRadio FRee Europe in Munchen, active anti-Communist groups in Poland, the start of Solidarity Movement and JPI stand contra Communism; his revolutionary speech in Warsaw in June 1979; shortly, the assassination attempt on May 13, 1981, by.... . Give me a break, such "Morons" of LeftWEst University, who ignore hundreds murdered only in the final time of the collapse, also one student at 1982, May 3 anti-regime demonstration beaten to death by Communist State Police! ps. December 8 (of Bialoviezha ACCord,1991)- the Feast of Immaculata in RC! Do you get it?
The End Of Days are near.
Time will tell.

I don't want to know why USSR collapse, but I know one thing.
That is: USSR from its foundation recognizes the inalienable right of self determine.
Unfortunately, the successors never recognize it, but it is not up to the fascists.
The inalienable right of self determine, can't be taken away from the fascists.
Under the dust and ruin of Serbia Fascists in 1999, Kosovo becomes independent;
Under the dust and ruin of Ukraine Fascists in 2022, Donbass becomes independent.

But Russia doesn't like that Kosovo became independent. Or that Ukraine is aligned with the West. Or that Georgia is aligned with the West.
