This is a puzzle where asking 'why is piece X on the board?' helps to find the solution. With the White king in the corner and two pawns on the 7th rank it's clear the g-pawn is the only one that can be promoted in a 2-move checkmate, and the only reason for it to be there is so it _can_ be promoted. The only question then is what piece to promote it to. Queen or rook is a stalemate and bishop doesn't achieve anything, so it has to be an underpromotion to a knight.
