  • My Sony DTC-790 is showing a caution message on the screen.
Lets poke around and see if I can fix it... again.
Of course I can, watch and learn.

Just getting back to normal in this house; planned on starting work on some cassette decks, and.....wham! My DTC-59es stopped working. Long story short, used this vid to resolve the issue. (damn plastic locker's ) allowed one arm to go out of timing, jamming the tape. I did all the other fixes, and things are good. I do need to do a tape /head alignment, but i don't as yet have a scope. I wish i knew a shop i could trust in the states.
So much thanks,as I was sick over this failure. I surely am grateful for the help!

Thanks for uploading this. Mine was displaying the same symptoms ... the first cleaning of the "cassette in" micro-switches didn't work that well so I went chasing other possibilities. But those switches seemed to be the only explanation, so I went back and really cleaned them, and now all is great !!

In Sony equipment (at least with DAT players and Video-8 camcorders) the CAUTION warning means there's humidity or condensation inside the unit. This is mentioned in the user's manual and happens when the DAT has been stored in a wet place or has been moved from a warm place to a cold one or vice-versa... The solution is to wait an hour or so, preferably turn on the
dehumidifier if you have one - It's not a mechanical fault, just a method to prevent the tape from sticking to the drum...

I am so sadden that the companies dropped the DAT systems. Like you said, they are a super recording format that didn’t need to be lost. Now it is so hard to find replacement parts like head drum units or house ICs; now just throw the unit into the junk pile and go buy some other unit on ebay. DAT units seem so expensive now adays (specially with shipping cost) and you never know what you are going to receive from the seller. ..... Anyhow, love the way you present your vids ....Good Stuff ....and lots of info, thanks....

Incredible detailed video..I'm gonna try to fix the same caution problem. The first I found was the SOLENOID with the two screws unscrewed...I fixed that, but the problem persists. If I turn by hand the supply reel , feels free, but the take up reel is like it was a little stucked. I will disassemble the reel's mechanism and I'll share my solution too. Another Issue was, the unit turn off and on suddenly after I turned on o during playback music: Allegedly it was the power on-off switch dirty, I cleaned and solder the welds. It made the unit turn off and on randomly and also when I touched the play or stop buttons, the unit made this issue too. Best regards

Many thanks for your super-helpful demo, because my 790 seemingly has exactly the same symptoms. My tech know-how and tools are pretty much non-existent, but I could probably Deoxit the switches if I had a better understanding of exactly where they're located on the transport chassis, and if I had a clearer idea of how much disassembly is required to get at them. Would very much appreciate any help you can give me on this.

Very interesting as usual ;) Good explanation on the ADC stuff, I think for signed 16 bit you get 32767 positive values and the same number of negative values - That's a lot of definition really, especially when the sample rate is 44/48Khz. It was amazing technology really, ahead of its time. Sony really used to pioneer this industry.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  9 лет назад +2

Yes the resolution is something like that. I was trying to explain it in laymans terms.
Regardless, you have 32767 possible voltage measurements above and below your base line. Anything higher than that is represented at 32767 and on playback that forms a square wave.
I will do a demo with test tones on various digital recorders at some time to show what happens to the waveform.

In my case on my Sony A7, when I press play, the 2 guides never get pushed into position to thread the tape. I believe this is because the tape isn't laying flat (I can see this with the cover off.) One of the guides is slightly higher than the other (in resting position) so the tape is catching on that guide. When I use a pencil to lay the tape flat, it still won't play. I'm wondering if this is because the computer has sensed a problem with the tape and essentially does a full stop, because I also cannot unload the tape. Strangely, if I power the unit off and back on, essentially "rebooting the computer", it still won't play the tape or eject. If you have any suggestions on what I should focus on, I would love to hear about it. Thanks!

Hello! My DTC-ZE700 has a problem: when the rewind is turned on, the tape flies from the mechanism and gets stuck (WAIT on the display), sometimes it is refilled in a cassette with overlapping. The tape transportation and rewinding/fast forwarding of the tape is difficulty. Visually, mechanism is normal, everything is moving, the switches are working, the winding motor is working normally (checked from 4.8 V). By the way, I installed down the pinch roller in his place... maybe I put roller on the wrong side (upside down)? Where to look?

The opening music, and for that matter all music used in all of my productions is royalty free content from Musicbakery.com.This track is a rework of the track Undercover. You will hear musicbakery music in all sorts of video and film production. I encourage anyone looking for high quality music they can use in their productions to head over to musicbakery.com This is an endorsement to the composer Jack Waldenmeier. He is a master and has music for pretty much any project you can imagine. My production company, way back when I was in the commercial business bought probably a dozen CDs from them after we got hammered for using just background music that the client liked for a voice over. We got a strongly worded letter from a lawyer representing a label, so back to the edit suite that work went, and the music was stripped. I went searching for royalty free content and stumbled across music bakery, showed it to my business partner and the next thing I knew he went and bought a bunch of CDs and said from now on this is the only music we use. That was find by me, it is all good stuff. Cost the company a few grand to buy it. Long story short, my business partner died, and I decided I didn't want to deal with the business side of running a production company I was on the technical and cinematography side, and I didn't have the business skillset to deal with the sales and accounting side. So the company folded, and I ended up with a bunch of hardware to dispose of.

+Gerald Nichols They are very tedious to work on because of their size, however don't toss it out. You would be surprized that people are looking for broken DAT machines, if for nothing more than parts, as new parts are impossible to find, and even if a plastic part is broken, there are many good parts in there that collectors want for restoration. I have sold broken things on Ebay, and have gotten more for a unit for salvage that I ever imagined it was worth.I recently sold an old mono sony Betamax for 400.00! That was more than the unit sold for new. Mine was in working condition, and that is why it fetched such a high price, but I would have been happy with a fraction of that because I basically took 2 broken machines that I found in the garbage, and made a good unit (the video of the repair is on my channel) and then sold it for a huge profit.

You also have to watch those damn white nylon post bushings on the posts of the mechanism. They crack and lose their grip causing all sorts of problems in the mechanism. They crack very easily. Horrible design. Anyway, I see yours is cracked on the black arm that has the odd gear. Those bushings are no longer available though I see a guy on eBay selling packs of three for $12!! I fixed mine by putting a dab of hot glue on the top of the bushings. Try to force the glue a bit down the two holes on each side of the bushing to help it grab on to the post better. Someone mentioned gel super glue could be used, I did not try that. Might be smart to do this preventatively on your unit...
