I experienced a 7.6 earthquake in the 90's so I know the one in Taiwan is also scary. Prayers for peace and immediate help and rescue to all affected.
I was in Norwalk in CA under a car on a lift still have nightmares.

7.4 followed by a 6.4! They have also experienced 8 aftershocks of 5 or greater
Yes, it hasn't stopped. I finished a work call with the US just before 8am and was about to shower and head to the office when the quake arrived. Every time I felt safe enough to go into the shower, another round of strong aftershock arrives.

Although the intensity of this earthquake was high, the damage in Taiwan was not severe compared with previous earthquakes in Turkey or other countries. Many buildings in Taiwan are ugly and old, but their earthquake resistance is still very good. Taiwanese people also took the earthquake relatively calmly.
I hope the Taiwanese folks I worked with years ago are okay.

This woke me up today in Taipei with my whole bed shaking for about 30 seconds. It’s scary to see how some buildings have been affected in Hualien and let’s hope we get as many people out safely 🙏🏻

I felt an earthquake in northern CA around 8:20pm last night. A quick jolt. Could that be from same Taiwan quake?? I’m near the Pacific coast of northern CA
Good GOD. This is truly terrifying! I hope all people affected can get to safety. Even in Japan, where their building codes are strict to take into account strong to severe earthquakes, any building not upgraded to the modern building codes can go down in a 7.0 or stronger.

From the news I've read, over 100 buildings have collapsed and less than 10 died. Yes, we had April 1st a couple days ago, but I think its too late for that now!!

Taichung 台中 is in central Taiwan on the west coast. The epic center is on the east coast near city of HUA LIANG 花蓮, which means “Flower Lotus”
Now, I’m curious about Taiwan’s building codes. I was there decades ago, so I expect they’ve improved. But my relatives there told me of buildings made with empty food containers used instead of reinforced steel.
