  • A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician shows you how to replace spark plugs on the 2010-2021 Toyota 4Runner and 2010-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser.
In this video I cover the replacement procedure for the 5th gen 4runner and the FJ cruiser models with the updated 1GR-FE engine. The 2007-2009 FJ cruise had a different version of the 1GR-FE engine that was similar to previous the previous 4runner generation with the old 1GR-FE
This is a very simple and easy job and only requires very basic hand tools and should be carried out every 120,000 miles or 10 years whichever comes first.

Thank You so much!! I have just changed the plugs on my 2013 Trail Teams FJ at 92000 miles . Your method of instruction and clarity of video is sublime. Those key tips and tricks, like a magnetic socket meant the whole job went smooth as butter! One point for my style of learning, - I did the easy side first to get familiar with the process. I just did this job in a couple of hours. I did not have to remove the outermost air box on the passenger side and I used it to hold the various nuts, bots and tools. As far as the secondary air injection valves that are in the way, I just removed the top two bolts and left the tube in there. It is not in the way and I've read horror stories about breaking the lower studs that hold that tube to the exhaust manifold. It is a pain to fix if you break off a rusty stud on an expensive part. Remember, this fellow is doing this job of a pretty pristine looking FJ with zero rust. My 2014 with 175,000kms of Canadian weather isn't in the same condition. Broken studs and bolt heads can ruin your day/week so I only remove what's absolutely necessary.

Watched your video to prepare myself. Fortunately, I was able to remove and replace plugs on the passenger side of my 2010 4runner, without having to remove anything! The plug on the driver's side closest to the firewall was a bit more challenging, but all I had to do was lift the harness off the hanger and work around the hoses. The other plugs on the driver's side came right out. Never saw the secondary injector you were referring to, but am glad I didn't have to mess with that!

    1) universal joint sockets

    3) remove that bracket on the drivers side
I also lost a socket. Thankfully it fell all the way through to the floor.

Early 5th Gen, such as my 2010, don't have the secondary air injection systems to get in the way, making this job much easier and faster than shown. I also did not need to remove any air intake parts to access the passenger side plugs. For the entire job, I only had to remove 2 double hose guide brackets held on by plastic clips and 1 other metal bracket on the driver's side to get to the plug farthest in the rear (2 12 mm bolts). All the online videos appear to show later model 5th gen 4Runners which look way more complicated to get to all the plugs.

Great Video!! THanks! What happens when you forget to re-connect the hose? :D I made this mistake and realized it after about 100 miles and watching ur video. Hopefully it didn't cause too much damage.

Hi! The car will run very rich at idle and possibly foul the plugs. The harm would be minimal if you don’t idle the engine a lot. If there was a lot of idling I’d pull the plugs and clean them and everything will be good.

Great video. I’ve always had trucks with Toyota 22-RE 4-banger and have been starting to do maintenance work on my 4Runner 4L-V6. I appreciate the insight of your experience and thinking as a seasoned mechanic, as you work through the process with caution points and tips…very helpful. Must see video for the 4L-V6 DIY’er. Thank you!

Humm.. i was hoping to see the cylinder order since i have and error code on #4 of my 2011 FJ 4wd, but i am pretty sure my issue is rodents & a short in the wiring harness somewhere due to the rat droppings a saw - great post, thank you!

I watched and followed this video and everything was pretty straight forward on my 2014 Trail. However, when I started it up the check engine light and A Trac lights are on. Scanned with my ScanGauge II and it was a P2438 - Air Flow / Pressure Sensor Circuit High Bank 2. Any idea why it’s all of a sudden throwing this code or how to clear? I went over all connections at least 3 times to make sure everything was connected. Thank you for all your videos

Question, I’m very impressed with the build quality of the 4Runner. Why does the air filter have that outer filter on it? Is this to filter the big ball bearing rocks? My 2019 Tacoma didn’t have this outer filter. Thank you!

Likely to keep large debris out of the filter element

My 11 4runner doesn't have secondary air injection. Makes the job much easier.

I was able to change the 6 spark plugs in my 2011 4Runner (2 wheel drive SR5 model) without having to remove the different parts! Only the heater hoses were loosen from the clips, but not removed in anyway to access the most difficult spark plug identified in the video (location closest to the driver side). I just used extensions on my ratchet set and wiggled things around. Weird.
