I am fascinated by the way these craftsmen work their magic with the wood and the artistic way they craft their items, by hand, not by throwing it into a lathe but with artistic temperament, what an honour to get to watch these people at work, shame the rest of the world doesn't put their artistic abilities to use making things like this.
I really enjoyed watching how these craftsmen use their feet while working. Very interesting! I feel its an unappreciated tool in western woodworking. Thanks for sharing.

Meaning that technical development is the interaction of scientific aspects with psychological and social aspects.
In the USA we have men and women with similar skills. We have in our area alone craftsmen who have been doing similar work that has been passed down from father to son. Many, there are dozens in our area alone. They hold contests everywhere, so the skill level continues to grow and thrive. Here in the USA there are people like this everywhere. In our town alone there are more than a 1000 and that number is growing right here in the USA.
I have taken a lot of pictures in Tokyo that are of exquisite manhole covers, I just got back 3 weeks ago. But I've never seen the painted ones, wow! Thanks for posting!
I would like to have one of the colorful manhole covers ... maybe I'll buy one as a souvenir on my next trip to Japan and take it as hand luggage into the plane back home 😂

The first craftsman's chainsaw needs a tightening and a good filing job. He certainly knows how to cut, store and dry 1/4 sawn wood blanks. Then he forms those blocks and blanks like a true artisan. This is a life's worth of passion, education and honing traditional woodworking skills passed down many generations.

I thought so, too! I can’t think of many reasons why it was being scrapped! Oh! I just saw a whole stack of brand new cars there… maybe they got waterlogged during shipment, or a container flipped and it was cheaper to just scrap them (?)
@@karenneill9109 cars & bikes over 5 years old have to go through more road worthy checks & licencing & insurance get exponentially more expensive so only highly collectable cars get to be maintained.. hence their 2nd hand export markets

Pretty amazing work all round - the detail in those manhole covers! Makes this Brit rather ashamed of ours. Particularly loved the makers of Go boards - I expect they all go into a little communion with their deities to get into the right frame of mind - quite spooky the degree of attention. Wonderful glad I popped in.

I really love this about Japan, despite having all the tech companies etc they still care for and respect the handcrafted items and the craftsmen. They appreciate their culture and that's thanks to refusing their country to be overrun by immigrants!
Interesting observation-people emigrate because of problems in their native countries but when they become immigrants in a successful society they want to make changes that would make the adopted country more like their abandoned country…I actually never attributed the decline in workmanship to the multitude of changes and attitudes of foreign workers, but it certainly tracks with history.
40 years ago I had a woodworker friend make me a Go board of 4" thick maple w/ the lines inlaid black walnut , Like most of the other lovely things i've had it got away from me somewhere ,Ah.well !!!

Удивительно, показывают старого дедушку работающего на ленточной пиле, и у него все пальцы на месте.
