Why did the wheel cylinder blow on my M37?

- There were only 3 lugs nuts on the wheel. That should have told m something. Also looking at the drum the 3 flush mounted screws had been drilled out and the brake drum came off too easy. See what we found.

Hey Lucky. Now that is a really good example of guys/Gals thinking they know what they are doing. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍
yes indeed they got in a hurry because the wheel cylinder had been rebuilt but only one shoe. Probably had the brake stuck and took the shoe off so it would roll is all i can think of.
I drove my 67 IH travelette 3/4 ton for couple years on steep mountain roads before i found the front brakes had been frozen not working for years, but i use gears going down hill, not brakes, lol.
I like your truck!
Yes that's the good thing about having gears you can use engine compression to slow you down but I am going to do this right and make sure I have everything working. Besides the guy who did these brakes before was a total idiot and I don't want to rely on anything he did.
Wow that's a mess Larry ,I hope you can make it right. Thanks Slim.
Yes I can rebuild it no problem just need the new shoes and it will work again after honing out the wheel cylinder and replace it with new parts.
Larry, Larry, Larry...it's a US Army vehicle, my friend. That wheel cylinder repair was Army sop...called G. I. engineering. Trust me on that. 😋
Regards,
John
Oh John John John no the motor pool wouldn't do something this bad. It was the guy who bought it from the Army Auction 10 years ago that did these bogus repairs. Trust me on that John.
Given the shoddy work you've already found and missing parts, it's probably safer to check the brakes on all four wheels Larry. The front brakes being what actually stops the truck are critical. Good work Man :)
Yes I was thinking the same thing Frank. These alloy
pistons in side the wheel cylinder are prone to jamming. To get one out on one side of the wheel cylinder I had to use a 1/2" drive ratchet handle and a 2 lb sledge hammer to pop it free. Not supposed to be that tight. So will have to check and replace all the others with new wheel cylinder parts or new altogether.
@@LarryDeSilva64 Alloy? lol. I've only seen them in steel. BTW, have you checked out the front wheel bearings?
Yep, that'll do it!
It sure was. It still puzzles me how someone could drill out the screws which takes a lot of work to do then rebuild the wheel cylinders and then doesn't put the other shoe on?
I just looked through Erik's military parts and he doesn't have a lot of M37 parts.
But hid otlrices are better..
I just checked on a m37 water pump.
$72
BigvMikes motor pool wants $105
Just got a notification from UPS the new shoes will be here Tuesday the 12th.
Baby need a new pair of shoes!
Well as of today Erik's Military and Industrial supply has not shipped the shoes hopefully they will some time today and I will get them by next week.
WTF!? Who removes a brake shoe and puts it back together that way!
Yes I know who indeed. They went through all of the trouble to drill out the screws rebuilt the wheel cylinder and then only put one shoe on. It still puzzles me why anyone would do that. So in vehicles the same thing is true bubba is still alive and messing stuff up.
