@@bluegirl278 that was kind of the point? In order to have a Disney villain they could do, it’ll have to be one you can’t recognize straight from their description. Otherwise he’d be influenced by what he knows.

Old gentlemanly creepiness is exactly how Dracula is in the first act of the book. He keeps up the pretense of just being a kind host long after the John Harker realizes something dangerously supernatural is going on. By the end of that part, it’s almost mocking. You nailed it.

@@SebasTian58323 Strongly recommend doing so. I've seen the Coppola adaptation and while there are some great ideas behind it - clearly, because there were really good artists behind the movie - I feel like it does not do the book any justice. Especially the character of Mina gets absolutely shafted by the film despite being the most interesting character of the book while at the same time being a really, really good example of a strong female character, who is actually not a Mary Sue.
From what I've heard or read about various other Dracula adaptations (TV, big screen, radio, comic, ...), every creator so far has tried to add something of their own invention to Stoker's original and, as a consequence, butchered this or that aspect of what made the original story so good. These aspects may be interesting interpretations in the adaptations in their own right, but IMO at the cost of the value of the story/writing as a whole.

Having recently read the book for the first time, I arrived at the vivid description in the book and thought that Dracula was not quite portrayed in visual media as was described. I would say he needs longer hair as the book describes his hair as "growing profusely" around the temples.

As a Dungeon Master with more than two decades of experience in D&D, I must say that you have made a perfect depiction of a Mind Flayer, possibly a wizard or scholar

As soon as i saw him drawing Mind Flayer i got excited because i got raised basically on BG games and now i am waiting for the third one to be released. I've been trying to stop playing early access and overall read any info to kinda forget about the game and make time flow faster and yet i came across this video and here we are again 😂
I could definitely see myself taking that drawing and turning it into a long running villain to torment my players across a whole campaign

Now I had seen it or something very similar in those comics where the monster moves into a dungeon and is actually nice to people he comes across.
Like he takes in a bullied girl because she has a gift with magic. Or where he makes a cloak for that half nakked chick and gives her a hot chocolate before showing her the way out.

I had initially said mind flayer to myself, but I will admit that the "Hat" part threw me off. Lol Like a ball cap or top hat. Had the description said "High, flaring collar with a dark hood" I wouldn't have second guessed myself. Lol
I think originally in the sorcerer’s stone movie they had planned Quirrel to reveal a very horrifying snake-like Voldemort on the back of his head, they just cut it because they felt that a regular face back there was nightmare fuel on its own (it was for 10 year old me lol)
His face in the Sorcerer's stone is really close to his actual form

1. The wicked witch of the west from the Wizard of Oz. In the book there are a lot of interesting details to work with.
2. The Phantom of the Opera
3. The Grand High Witch from The Witches.
4. President Snow from the Hunger Games is so creepy in the book, but in the movie he just looks like a normal dude.
5. Jadis, the White Witch from the Chronicles of Narnia.
6. Miss Trunchbull from Matilda
Do I like witches? It looks like I like witches. At any rate, I’d like to see some of them.
Heroes:
1. Aragorn from Lord of the Rings (when we first meet him)
2. The Lorax (the description really doesn’t look like the illustration, it’s perfect)
3. Mary Poppins
4. D’Artangnan from the Three Musketeers
5. Childlike Empress from the Neverending Story

I definitely like Bram Stoker’s version better than the popular one we have today
I like the essence of the story so much better than movie adaptations of it too. It struck me as a story about friendship and faith in the face of adversity, rather than simply a celebration of the monstrous.

@@timmiller1how is it about friendship? Drac routinely admits he's "a monster worse than God can fathom." Through the whole novel and that he REVELS in that fact and enjoys killing Innocents.

For Dracula, you gotta remember that, back in the day when it was written, mustaches was seen as status symbols for men. It proved that you were (in the old timey fashion it was) "manly" by having facial hair, but you had the money to take care of yourself, as opposed to full beards, which were considered to be a symbol of not being able to afford to take care of yourself.
Not to mention the historical Dracula had quite a mustache.
I actually quite enjoy the image of Dracula with a full, bushy beard over his descriptively chiseled jaw

Well, originally Dracula (Son of the Dragon) was based off of Vlad the Impaler who was known as Dracul/Dracula. Vlad had quite the mustache and was the Voivode of Wallachia in the 15th century. The mustache may have been a symbol of distinction, but Dracula has it because Dracula had it.
I'm reading Dracula at the moment, it's a really special book for me (me and my ex are really fascinated by foreign languages and it was her gift for me, since English was our favourite). And as soon as I saw the *mustache* and the Vampiric features I had absolutely no doubt in my mind who it was!
Dracula has been my favourite book since we studied it at school, I knew it immediately when I heard the first prompt

I absolutely loved the Ilithid, "Mind Flayer." I knew what it was from tentacles, but I thought your version was amazing.
I am really enjoying this series! It touches my heart. My godfather was an artist and I spent a lot of time of my childhood at his place. I fondly remember when me and my nephew, his son, were kids, we often would go to him with ideas we had for monsters or dragons or whatever. And he would sketch as we were describing our monsters. Leaving it uncolored. We then colored them in with the colors we had in our minds. He would then improve our coloring and highlighting it and adding shadow and dimension and stuff to make it look professional 😊. He passed away about a year ago. This series really takes me back to those days. So yeah, I'm really enjoying this. Thank you for that! I hope it goes on for a while!
I think a monster like the Grievers from the first maze runner book would be really fun to do because their description is so vague and creepy and who knows what you might end up interpreting it as… also love this series so much❤❤❤

Yes!! When I read the book (just a year or two ago) I had to Google them afterwards because I had no idea what they'd actually look like based on the description, and I never found a good enough representation because everything is muddled by the movie version (which obviously looks completely different). Would LOVE to see Jazza interpret the book version!
As much as I love the movie interpretation of Voldemort, your design is perfect and SO much more in line with what I envisioned when originally reading the books.
Not perfect. The nostrils Jazza drew were slits like a skull, not slits like a snake. The movie was much closer on that front. Given the snake motif that Voldemort goes for, that seems like a pretty big selling point for a visual depiction. The biggest thing the movie does wrong is the eyes and Jazza nailed it there

The looks of Voldemort in the Harry Potter films is not scary because they need to meet the film rating of PG to PG-13 so that even the youngsters are allowed to watch it. They need more people to buy tickets to break even. The same goes with other creatures and scary characters in other films.
I think one of the problems with depicting Voldemort in the movie as perfectly as you have drawn him is that Ray Fiennes isn't exactly a marathon runner frame. In addition, all the cosmetics they had to add to create the slit nose over his own expands the face even more.
I recall watching the Making of in which they said the flat slitted nose is actually cgi. On set the actor can be seen with a series of black dots marking his nose for the cgi crew to replace it with the more snake like slits.
I actually recall that they made a conscious decision to not make him as physically grotesque and monstrous as he was in the books to avoid having him feel like a cartoonish villain. They wanted to keep just enough of his humanity evident so that you always remember that as magical as he might be he’s ultimately still an extremely demented, sadistic person with a deeply twisted psychological desire to cause pain as opposed to being a cartoon monster who is just evil because he’s a scary monster.
The mind flayer looks almost exactly like the Bauldur's Gate 3 ones. Man's imagination is on a whole other level
Mind flayers are THE face of DND for DMs. They represent the dark evil we portray in the campaigns story, but the refined intelligence of someone toying with others for fun
I freakin' LOVE your Mindflayer. Most Illithids are depicted more as wormy little grub mages than the pround, refined, dominant sorcerers that they are.
You'll like them in BGIII, then. =)

Technically, they're using psionics, not magic, but they are supposed to seem smart and powerful. After all, they ruled the universe. Twice.

I did my uni dissertation on depictions of Dracula in literature, stage and screen and your illustration is definitely true to the book! That's the description of Dracula when we first meet him at the very start - he starts to appear younger as he has access to more victims. What's weird is that although his appearance is so sinister, he's very chatty and charming in the book!
I wonder if the charming nature is why Hollywood opted for a more elegant Dracula look, so there isn’t that sort of mismatch

Well I'm thinking maybe also because it is based a bit on Vlad Dracul (the impaler) who had a big bushy moustache. ;)

I love how without knowing the name, Jazza completely nailed the Mindflayer so perfectly. Even the concept designs with the different hats were exactly how most Mindflayers look, each being of a different rank in their society. I give a thumbs up to this illustration.
Yet the mindflayer was the easiest to know by the description.
Loved they added a D&D monster.
From the description and heck most of the drawing I though it was Cthulhu, or some other lovecraftian creation

I remember watching the Harry Potter movies with my best friend as a kid. I remember that the movie interpretation of Voldemort absolutely terrified her, but I was absolutely fascinated by his appearance because he reminded me of a grey alien. Of course, I sat through movies like Alien vs Predator and The Terminator when I was around six years old, so films like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire barely fazed me.
Dude, I have always wished I could draw lol. I’m just way too right brained. Great with design and photoshop, but that’s because both things turn into a logical and “math-esque” kind of task for me. Watching you just fiddle around the pages with random sketches was awesome, yet reminded me how I can’t even get in that flow state of mind. Lol. This was an awesome series

As someone from Romania who adores old stories about Romanian monsters, I can say that I appreciate how he portrayed Dracula, in Romanian folklore vampires are not meant to look good.
I went to Transylvania last year and loved it! I even made a video about it🙌
I actually thought Dracula sounded like he had, if not attractive features, certainly striking features, in a not-entirely-unpleasant manner, when I first read the book.

I remember being underwhelmed by Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort too. I was perplexed why they didn’t make his eyes red and snakelike, like the books described. Maybe Ralph didn’t take to wearing contacts very well or something.

There’s also a chance the director took that approach because they knew a lot of kids were going to watch it and didn’t want it to give too much “horror” because it’s definitely a scary description. Who knows. Red eyes and the slitted pupils totally made him in the books tho!!
Contacts for long periods of time, specifically colored contacts, can irritate eyes and in general lead to pain and sometimes conditions. Its the reason nowadays you see CGI technology replacing colored contacts.
I wouldn't be surprised if the studio didn't give them the option due to this. Most times they go for actor's comfort over impressive visuals. Days of sticking piano wire up your nose and pulling it back are long, long ago. Though I will not lie, I do miss practical makeup.

I just realized so much. I too, was really disappointed at his first appearance due to this description, but after seeing your drawing I just realized what the description was- an inferi. It wasn’t so much as a snake, it was death itself, which is how I would described an inferi. Interesting how many descriptions of Death itself were in the series. For number 2- I really was thinking of stranger things, but was not smart enough to put two and two together.
I love how I hadn't even read half the hints for the mindflayer when I already knew what it was going to be! :D the description is really good and you absolutely nailed it!! And I really liked the other ones, too! I'd love to see this become somewhat of a series!
One of the adaptations with Christopher Lee actually has a Dracula with a moustache, it's pretty good too.

Oh I really wanna see more mythological creatures drawn from Jazza. Those are some of my favorite ones. The Hopkinsville Goblin was also a favorite. (That was in the character drawing challenge)
For those of you that don’t know, originally Voldemort was going to be shown in the movies exactly as described in the books, but since they were supposed to be for children too, they had to dim him down to get the rating suitable for children too.
Also the amount of make up on his face was already SOOOO much beforehand and with all of the extra details, the actor wouldn’t be able to talk
Also they stated that with slitted eyes they could get emotions “seen” visually.. like anger or fear without a normal pupil
I like that they went with a more subtle look. Monsters aren't monsters because they look angry and ugly, they are monsters because of their actions.
Wasn’t the Witches movie starring Anjelica Huston also made for children? Obviously they didn’t mind giving kids nightmares back then.

Love this series! Although Jazza has probably never heard of the books by German author Walter Moers, I would love to see his renditions of the characters. Especially the characters from "Rumo and His Miraculous Adventures" come to mind: Gornab the Ninety-ninth, General Tick-tock, Friftar, the Demonocles... so many to choose from! 😊
I was so stoked that I guessed the first two without much trouble at all. I LOVE mindflayers. they are so much fun. you nailed that during your sketching. it was so amazing.
This drawing is much closer to what I imagined when reading the books as a kid than what I imagined from even the audio books or what appeared on the movies.
I've played D&D for over half my life and your depiction of the Mind Flayer is the most accurate I've seen. Most drawing I've seen look like Cthulu in a robe (they still look badass), but your's hits the mark perfectly!
I really like these cause I can guess before Jazza even starts. But then his imagination goes wild and he go so far and beyond my imagination!
Glad to say I got all 3 this time. And you did such a good job on the Mind Flayer! That backdrop and hat definitely helped to emphasize how ominous the drawing was. The Dracula was super cool, too. Also didn't know the original description had a mustache - neato!
I was going to suggest Dracula! When I finally read the book for the first time last year, I was really struck by how different our collective concept of the character is despite how very specific Stroker was in his description. The novel takes place over a fairly long period, during which we know he changes in appearance, so who's to say ol' Drac doesn't eventually look more like Spirit Halloween's interpretation, but this is much closer to the version of the character that Jonathon Harker first meets in act I

My man! I just recently started reading Bram Stoker's Dracula and have been doing a few character portraits of Dracula per the literature. I was so thrown off by the mustache. I have never once in my life heard a reference to Dracula having a mustache. So happy you did this just days after I did it. Such a wonderful coincidence.

The mustache for dracula is probably based off of Vlad the Impaler (Vlad III), which is where Stoker drew his inspiration from. Vlad III had a large mustache which are observable in his portraits.
I recognized the first description instantly, and your first sketch was so close to perfect, I almost screamed at the computer hen you took it in a different direction.
Then you more than made up for it with the illithid. Literally better than any of the official illustrations of them since Diterlizzi's iconic 2nd edition Monster Manual version.
Then you gave Voldy the movie nose instead of anything even remotely snake-looking. It literally looks more like "Drawing the movie version, but more scary" than drawing according to the exact description in the book.
Voldy's nose description sort of contradicts itself because snakes all have round nostrils. Although I guess the slits could go the other way and be smaller, but based on the structure of skulls, vertical slits make the most sense.

The thing about Dracula being described as having a moustache is he is based on Vlad Tepes, a Romanian ruler who is often depicted as having had bushy facial hair of the type described.
He’s also a product of his time. Mustaches, in that time period, we’re status symbols. They were seen as “manly,” and showed you had extra/disposable money to take care of them. They were (typically) heavily waxed and meticulously trimmed and shaped as the person climbed higher moneywise. Full beards, on the other hand, were indicative of poverty or laziness, since the person doesn’t have the money to just throw away on a facial accessory like that.
Being a bit of a RPG nerd, as soon as I heard the description for #2, I knew exactly what it was and was very excited to see his interpretation of it. :)

I found the first one really creepy, more than the earlier really big or scary monsters.
The second one had some nice colours! although the "white pop" maybe undo a bit of its darkness.
As for the third, you did a better job then the movie, awesome!
1:48 - I literally read those very words in the book today, so I knew instantly who it was. My first time reading it, so fascinating to see your depiction.
I love these videos. As much as I love the chaotic unknown of you trying new mediums or weird challenges and screaming in confusion and then creating a masterpiece lol, I really enjoy the stuff like this where we just get to see a wholesome and talented guy create awesome art. Which we do always see in one form or another, but you know what I mean. Compare this to the Bob Ross challenges. Which don't get me wrong, those videos got me through some depressing days, but it's just super nice to watch stuff like this too.

- irises are deep magenta or black
- dark, heavy circles rimming the eyes
- pallor to the skin - an almost discolored, bruised quality
- teeth: look filed, coming to an unnatural point, glinting between lips that never seem to close
- clothing: long black cloak

14:09 BINGO. Books, V was calm, cool, collected. In charge. Dangerously quiet. The only person who rattled him into a panicked frenzy was Dumbledore. And eventually Harry once the H were destroyed.
I love it when we get to Draw with Jazza! These videos are always favorite. That intermission where you showed people enjoying your sketch pack felt so 90s PBS Kids lol.
I think a fun thing to do would be to put a bunch of descriptions of each body part in different hats and then pull out some random descriptions and create a drawing using them.

Idk if anyone is familiar with Brandon Sanderson's work, but some of his monsters are really interesting. Specifically from Mistborn, I'd love to see Jazza's take on the Koloss or the Inquisitors.

Voldemorts face before what it is now(in the movie) was way more more then what it is now. The reason why they changed it it’s cuz they would think it’s nit children appropriate and too scary. You can look up on Google what he looked b4

Personally I'll disagree, the more human look just feels right to me, a sort of humanity worn on a monster is scarier to me, but then again I live in the United States. We already have snakes in human skin called politicians.
Ngl, kinda disappointed with the Voldemort drawing. Looks like a pale red skull, lowkey. Like, really good art, I can't do anything like that, but a little... anticlimactic.

His face in Sorcerer's stone was the closet to his portrayal in the novels even the reddish black eyes

Jazza, I have been watching and enjoying your videos for a few years now and I really do want to commend you on being an excellent draughtsman. I used to love to draw when I was younger and I appreciate all the time and dedication you have spent on the craft honing your skill. I wish I would have stayed with it to this day and had an ability as strong as yours. Keep up the great work!!
I've been waiting for this series to get to Dracula! He's such a prime example of a character who looks completely different in most adaptations from how the book described him.
LOVE these! So fun seeing them come to life. Would love to see any of the monsters from the Dresden Files books, but especially the book Death Masks.

I LOOOOOOVE your mind-flayer! It has so much individuality and character to it! It gives it a sense of sapience that you don't seem to find in the other examples, at least in my opinion. I'm so glad you enjoy making this series as much as I enjoy seeing it.

I have a dnd campaign with some friends and we literally fought a Mindflayer yesterday! I instantly knew it was one when he was reading off the description.
First time in the series I guessed some monster right. :)
The Dracula description reminded me apart from the mustache to Count Orlock, played by Max Schreck in the 1922 Nosferatu.
Which is technically a Dracula Movie, they just renamed the characters to try not to get sued.
The Mindflayer was easy to guess as an old AD&D player. Your design is closer to the older illustrations from the 80s and 90s.
Like it a lot.
The Harry Potter things always catch me off guard as I never read the books, and only casually watched the movies.
My guess on Voldemort was for a Ghul or similar from some horror comic
