Indeed! Seeing an L300 on Ronny Dahl's channel is one of the reasons I'm so interested in this build. I think the L300 (modified) is more capable off road than the Toyota, but I suspect the additional space of the Toyota will be worth the trade-off. That said, I think bang-for-buck, the Mitsubishi is a better value deal. I'm looking forward to watching this build and seeing the final result!

Sometimes in life loyalty to a brand ( Troopy ) makes us blind to see that there is a better way to do things. Don't let loyalty to a brand rob you of a whole new adventure. Make a change the van is a whole new opportunity of space and comfort. Let one season end and embrace a whole new era in touring.

I owned 4 different Toyota commercial vans and thought why try anything else right? Well the last Toyota Hiace was a piece of junk for the money and I sold it after 2 years. Then I test drove a Mercedes Vito. 5 years latter it’s hands down the best van I ever owned. Didn’t miss a beat. Gosh I nearly cried the day I sold it.

The help with the onterior is easy. Copy what VW Westfalia did on the T3 and T4. Put a kitchen row behind the drivers side but make one change. Instead of a full time built in cooktop make a kitchen box you can use outside the van. Put a poptop on it. Modern day VW T3 Syncro.

It seems like the van might potentially be a better comfort vs 4x4 ability compromise. I suppose you have to ask yourself how much of your troopys off-road ability you would typically use on a trip. If this vehicle has maybe 80% of the ability of the troopy off road but is twice as comfortable for long term travel for 2 then it's kind of a no brainer.
Also if you had a little work desk in the back and starlink you could potentially travel, edit and post videos on the road. It would be a completely different workflow to how you typically make videos but it might be worth a thought.

Andrew, I have this van in 2wd and the fuel economy is not great compared to what I see the Landcruiser getting with the same engine. I'm keen to see what fuel economy you get with the 4wd version and your thoughts on its fuel economy. I'm getting around 12 litres to the hundred driving carefully compared to my big tyred, lifted, 3400KG 18 year old 4.2litre Patrol getting just under 15 litres per hundred.

I think you're onto a good thing. If it works out well then Bus 4x4 will be busy churning these out. I tried a VW Transporter 4Motion with a Siekel high lift kit for a couple of years and the only thing I thought was lacking was real rough-country ability (no low range either). It was really good as a tourer though. Went to a Troopy with an AluCab roof, but it wasn't quite big enough to live 'inside of' after the VW.

These 4wd bus conversions are shocking. Working at unspecified workshop where most of these things come in from private to hire companies, they are in theory brilliant, however they are a maintenance nightmare. A lot of custom parts the go wrong, weak 200 Series transfer cases that fail often and will take a long time for parts to arrive. The wheel alignments are impossible to get right again after being knocked out of place.
I love the concept of a brand new 4wd van as I love the Delicas and the old Russian NKVD bus, but these conversion don't work in the real world as of this point. Maybe one day they will, just not now.

    Hi there,
I'm completely OK with you about the fact that if you make your van looks the way you like it, it'd be awesome !
I've had a hdj80 for 4 years with an offroad caravan. Last setup was with an Ikamper RTT. We are a family of 4 and it wasn't as we expected it to be with the rtt... We bought a camper VW T4 syncro with hard high roof so we all can sleep without opening anything, heater, fridge, kitchen etc. I make it looks the way I like and even if I was really in love with my 80 (I cried when it leave home...), I'm more than happy with the syncro ! We spend 3 weeks in Morroco and even if it's not a real 4WD, he bring us where I wanted him to go and I've never used the rear locker...
Ok it's not possible to do hardcore 4WD but I don't care about, my wife is happy with it, and as you guys know: "happy wife, happy life"
    Cheers

Extremely interesting video. Regardless vehicle brand you will always compromise. But I recon that fitting a serious 4WD bits in to delivery van should do the trick. I never had Toyota but I have about 21 years of experience driving vans FWDs 20:11 off road. A lot is in air pressure in tyres, you know better then anyone. Reasonably big wheels on the top of it and you should be able to drive through most of the beaches in WA. I drive regularly to Lancelin or Wedge point. No issues. Adding all the bits from LC 200 and Hi-Lux should give you the extra confidence.
BDW your lovely wife was a jam. She knows how to challenge you. It’s a good think. 👍

Andrew I am a bit surprised that you put so much emphasis on form vs funtion. I would have thought funtion will be the overriding decision for you! Having owned a 60 series Cruiser, a couple of 80 series, a Prado, a Defender, a 200 Cruiser plus some others, one of my most enjoyable vehicles was a T3 VW Syncro. Not as capable in extremis as the Cruisers, but just so usable and practical. Just imagine how often do you need that little bit extra that a Troopy can give you off road compared to the HiAce? Very seldom. 99% of the time the practicality is what will make the process work. I think the HiAce will be fantastic. Forget about form and consider function!

As to off-road capability of the Hi-Ace, your experience and driving skills will enable you to take it to places that others in "Hard Core Off-road Vehicles" could never go.
You have pushed the "Troopy" pretty much to the limit of that which can be done with that platform.
In that respect, you have nothing left to prove.

I'm amused by the parallels with the adventure motorcycle community...your Troopy is a DR650, it's been around for ever and will get you most places, and now your van is a big Beemer GS equivalent, much more capable in a different way but not a proper offroad machine.

You can use most 4x4 for general off road camping haulage/transport, but if you can't stand up in it (like a camper vehicle or separate tent etc), then you have the universal issue of having to 'crawl' in and out of something, which is just a pain in bad weather. I have a Land Rover Defender 130 with custom racks, storage boxes and a flat bed tilt tray on it, which I intend to put a Trayon camper on and I think that's about as versatile as I'm likely to get.

The HiAce is tough looking enough when sitting high up, it's pretty heavy duty underneath. I've been on some really rough dirt roads in the Philippines in a HiAce as a passenger and it changed my opinion. It's not just a van like a Ford Transit Custom, it's a truck with a van body.
I happen to like the HiAce, I think they are pretty nice. So no issue for me.
But also think of the space and practicality you get with the van. It beats the Land Cruiser. I don't have any issues about driving a HiAce, but I am biased, I really like HiAces :D

You should be more excited about the new Defender as it’s actually the best one they have ever made. It’s more capable in all ways than all previous ones. This is proven, not speculation.
With all respect, your obsessive dislike of it is unfounded and frankly like everyone else who doesn’t like it, old and annoying.
It’s an amazing piece of machinery.
It’s pretty materialistic and arrogant to walk away from your vehicle and turn and look at it with the look you showed. Very snobby. It’s a vehicle. As for Toyota and Troopy’s - the Troopy is a butt ugly piece of machinery and not very good in any area either.
    Love your channel nonetheless.

So love your content and everything you stand for in the 4wd community. However, you always talk about doing something off road or driving up a mountain, but you never go “off road” yourself. Yes you drive dirt roads and you did the stock route but nothing you do requires an “extreme” 4wd vehicle. You could gain more followers and more views and make more money if you tried something else, like the Ineos even though it is crap or a truck build with a canopy camper or anything else out there but you stick with troopy which is great you love it but any 4wd can do what the troopy can do.
You don’t put enough hard miles on any of your builds to know what will break or how good it is because you never go anywhere. I could come over there and take a Hilux anywhere you could take the troopy or a Ram 2500 or a Nissan Patrol or 200 series. So no the troopy is just what you like and you haven’t experienced anything else so it would be hard for you to say what is the best. I live in the US and everyone says the Tacoma is the best but on paper it isn’t so I tried the vehicle no one likes which is the Colorado by Chevy and it was the best vehicle out of all my 26 vehicles I have owned even better than my 100 series or jeeps. Just try something else

Can't agree on your colour views. For me the best 5 colours for any vehicle are white, white, white, white and white. After that, if you must make do, then you put up with whatever you've been lumped with. Wish my '79 was white, but it's steel grey, so while I love it, it's only good looking, not beautiful.

The HiAce has the underpinnings and retrofitted (Toyota) components to do what you are asking of it, the propriertory nature of some of the conversion would be where my concerns are placed.
and, if you aren't happy once you've built and used it......sell it!

Its amazing how similar my thought process is to yours, Mr. White. I sold a kitted out FJ Cruiser a couple of years ago in favor for a bone stock Chevy Tahoe. On paper its worse in most ways. But, in the real world, its proven itself to be better in every single way apart from off-road capability.

I think the van idea is very good although I have a few questions in regard to NVH on long bitumen sections but as someone who drove a Troop Carrier thousands of kilometres over both rough and smooth roads I must say anything would be better. I could never understand how a two door (not including rear barn doors) could let in so much dust and be so noisy and slow and yet still be so expensive to run and maintain. You have to give it to Toyota with their advertising they have convinced so many people that they are so reliable but under normal condition (and abnormal) I didn’t find them any more or less reliable than a few others and often much more expensive to maintain. What I did find was that no one else really made a small off road bus like the Troopy so that was and is its saving grace. But no way would I own one if it was just myself and my wife.
It’s 1985 tech on a 1979 body with 2030 prices. The 200 series was just so much better and once I managed to convince the powers that be that it was a better work vehicle for me I never looked back. Still good cars but so expensive.

Is there any way of importing a Bus4x4 kit into South Africa for the Hi Ace / Quantum as it's called here? I tried to make contact via email with Bus4x4 but could not get a answer from them. Apparently there was a agent in Namibia at one stage but trying to make contact with them failed as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And that is the reason I love my estimas. I been a van person for years.
The old egg estima was a very capable 4wd van. and 2 moon rooms, swivel seats. Much easier to work on that a hiace. But glad to see other "experienced" people finally looking outside AT a box .

Classic case of over thinking 😉 I see no reason why this can't look awesome and why it won't be fully capable for overlanding. We all spend way too much time and money making our 4x4's more capable and in the process making the journey less challenging and therefore with less experience.

I actually like the stealthier property of the Amazon Delivery vehicle look. Much like I like sleeper performance vehicles. Some of the transformation will be obvious, but perhaps there is a market for the shy overlander. Heck, I would even put a fake corp livery and create a fake website to anonymize it.

Do it!! its a great idea. the charm is that its clever and different. anyone can pickup a magazine and read J70s are great, but this is unique. i think its so good of an idea Toyota should make factory spec overlanders on the platform. 2.8td !!

I dont get it. The Hiace has a Toyota 200 running gear. Unless it is underpowered or a fuel guzzler it should be just as capable. I have yet to see any of the trailes in your videos where break angle, front or rear made any difference to navagating a hazzard. You drive on hiways, unimproved roads, or open terrain. For you to automatically say it will be less capable shows a very high level of hubris.

You know it will perform offroad because this conversion has been available for ages using Landcruiser 100 running gear and like me, you have already seen them crossing the Simpson. What the van doesn’t offer is the modern comforts or an electric adjustable driver seat with positions you can save.

Rusty, you keep switching cars like what I did 7 years ago, I used to swapped cars every 2-3 years not even 4 years, now my 4x4 sprinter has been serviced me well for the past 7 years and still no pan to dump it. I lost a lot of money changing cars.

I used to have an early l300 van and it was an amazing vehicle off road the biggest benefit was the view out the from and it slowed you to watch front wheel placement and overall a better view out the windows. the troops has terrible seats and the suspension in std form is very hard on you. IFS is a great all-round front end where you get a better ride. all the modern electronic aids also make it better off road. I have a Pajero 2000 that could go way better in mud than most dull cabs because of traction control and anti lock brakes.

I didn't understand why it took so long to discuss "why do you need this van"? A man is a hunter by nature, even if he gets the most beautiful woman in the world, he will still look at others and drool like a hunter to himself! He just needs a new "victim"!😆😆😆 I came, I saw, I won! All other conversations are lyrics and dust in the eyes!

It would be nice to see you build something different for a change. You talk about doing difficult tracks in it etc etc. perhaps you’re doing a lot of trips with your mates that you don’t film. But from what I see in the channel, you don’t often do anything that’s so technically challenging. Even the canning isn’t technical. It’s just gruelling and harsh of the vehicle

This content is great the delivery is somewhat cringeworthy maybe it's the cultural differences. I wish I could get past the overdramatic nuances, I feel that what you bring is a warranted opinion and calculated content.... and I really am keen to see the van build.

Van= practical leisure vehicle... OK that's how I see them.
Iv owned a mobile sprinter for many years and dozens of landrovers and still drive and own a few but that sprinter can't half tow , my daughters love it and I can stand up in the back and work at a bench... OK not the best in a slippery situation but it's only rear wheel drive... a good vehicle can't make a great driver.... 😊.. stay safe 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
