With how cold and windy the days these parades are, it's a miracle the balloons are able to stay afloat unscathed.
1993 and 1997 were particularly brutal.
The Barney clip from Macy's 1997 posted on my Facebook feed for like a week now, which led me to Rudolph's untimely end. Now the rabbit hole had led me here. 😂 Happy 2024!

I was somewhere in the crowd behind the camera when the mishap with the Spider-man balloon happened. The good news is the balloon made it to the end of the parade without any other problems.
Garfield didn't ever have any major accidents. His paws just got deflated sometimes.
He had an accident in 1998 before the parade started that prevented him from flying
A chamber burst
In 1998, one of the internal chambers of Garfield straight up busted and made the balloon too damaged to fly.

Yesterday it happened to Greg heffleys right arm, and even it happen to Luffys hat, both balloons hitted a tree which made that happen
It's always obnoxious that the city NEVER trims the trees around the stupid parade route. They've been doing this for years and can't ever seem to get their heads outta their asses and trim the trees so they're less likely to pop a balloon and cause a problem let alone an accident. They could always add something to the lamp posts so they don't hurt the balloons but NYC just sucks

It did after the video clip. A few blocks ahead on the parade route, the head fell off the snowman and was pulled aside from the parade.

Accidents you missed: Pink Panther’s accident (1995), Red and Yellow M&Ms’s accident (2005), Bart’s Accident (1993), The Cat In The Hat’s accident (1997) and Kermit’s Accidents (1985 and 1991).
There aren't videos of the initial impacts of those. Except cat and M&Ms, but I thought those would be graphic for this video

In 1997!? That's crazy that you were one of the ones holding him when that happened! How was the experience? I heard they were hard to control that day, and they were very heavy.
Yes it was very windy that day,it was before they tethered the baloons to small john deere tractors we were fighting the wind till he went down but still so glad I got be in the Thanksgiving day parade & it wasnt my first will always have incredible memories of them MERRY CHRISTMAS@@brdrech

It was the Macy's Holiday Parade in Orlando Florida. Still happened, still an official Macy's parade
And the Uncle Sam balloon was in the Thanksgiving Parade in new york a few times.

Why don’t they just not fly the balloons at all when it is windy?
They have those rules in place now. They wont fly balloons if sustained winds are at 23mph, and gusts are 34mph. They actually didnt fly balloons back in 1971, due to 63mph gusts. The rules were implimented after the 1997 parade, when the Cat in the Hat balloon took down a lamppost onto the crowd below, hospitalizing people for a month.

They used to. Back in the early days of the parade, they'd just let the balloons loose at the end, and if you found one later and returned it to Macy's, you'd get a cash prize. Then the balloons started crashing into airplanes and killing people and someone was like "Y'know, maybe we should stop doing this."

The pink panther also had an accident in herald square almost put a women and her daughter into coma when the balloon knock down some balloon handlers and then the pink panther balloon got destroyed by a street light

The balloon sponsors pay around 10,000 USD every year that the balloon is in the parade. I think its Macy's themselves that spend the money to repair the balloons that get damaged.
