It depends on the definition of "absolute" beginner I think. I'm doing this currently after roughly 5-6 hours of learning in total and it's going quite well.
I appreciate the videos. My one request is that you would equalize the volume: I have to turn it up to hear the French conversations, then Gabrielle comes on in English and I’m practically knocked out of my chair! 😀
I've been learning french for a while now (I'm not an absolute begginer) and this fits perfectly to me. I don't think this is easy enough for someone who just started
I think the point of it is for absolute beginners to be able to cherry-pick necessary information out of a conversation they don't fully understand. For the first exercise, for example, you really only need to know "livre" and "voiture"; you don't have to know what "jeter un [coup d']oeil" means, at this point; it's just background noise.
im french (dont ask how i got here lol) and even though the dialogue is really short I think the verb "jeter un oeil" is not a common verb you would first learn as a begginer..
I'm learning French for a year now and l'm suprised how l actually understand more than l though l would. So proud of myself! If you want to learn certain language just listen to it often and you will start to understand it slowly. I did that with French and it helped.
Junior Quinones Well, I figured out that I can solve B2 level grammar exercises, and can hardly understand A2 listening comprehensions 😂😂 It's not that I don't enjoy French, its just that I've hardly listened to French before...I'm beginning to enjoy both French and German :-) Hopefully, if I get used to listening to French, I'll be able to do it... :-)
This is not, per se difficult, but, for beginners, this is more to try and piece together what they are saying for further understanding. No beginners could do this well, and understand with certain vocabulary and speed they speak at in certain places. Nonetheless, it is still an ok exercise for someone more advanced or as extra practice. Solving the questions are easy but to fully understand is more difficult for a new language learner.
Damn. On the last month, I tried this test. I thought it was really fast. Yesterday, I talked (tried to) with a French guy: IT IS WAY FASTER AND HARDER. Now this is becoming easier.
I am a french teacher and I find this super helpful for preparation for final oral comprehension exams!!! Thank you very much!!! I wish I could buy hard copy of the conversations or pdf format.
Ocean Anderson Well I like a lot of french music. So what I did was listen to a lot of french music and Pair the words with the written lyrics. I also searched the words I didn’t know. But basically I watch french media with “sous-titres” subtitles or I listen to french music while looking at the lyrics. It’s a very easy way to learn. After I gained fluency I moved to France. You’ll learn very quick that listening is the most important part of this language. I used to have a full vocabulary but couldn’t under this video when I first tried watching. Now this video is dramatically slow. Almost like a joke.
As an spanish speaker who is just starting french, i gotta say Romance languages are a blessing. It´s not impossible for me to understand almost everything here but it´s quite close. Greetings to any romance speaker
I came here two weeks ago really struggling with the listening... And now today, all the speech sounds as though it is in slow motion. Don't give up guys, persevere!
the way i use this video (that seems to really help) is i listen to the audio & try to figure out what it's saying & then listen to the audio while just looking at the french written part & if there's still something i don't understand i look at the english translation. after that i go BACK to just the audio, now knowing what it means, and i try to listen to the audio and get my brain to understand the meaning of what's being said w/o directly translating it into english. idk how much sense this makes, but i think it's a good way to stop your brain from directly translating and actually getting it to learn the language.
I also use this method. If you want to learn a new language you have to challenge yourself. For me, I try to find the point where understanding the phrases is really hard, so I only get like 15-25% percent of the words when I start. Then, gradually getting better, after I reach >70% rate of understanding I switch to the next difficulty.
I've been learning French for a few weeks, of course I can't understand all of these.... But it's soooo much better than in the very beginning... Now I can recognize sooo many words spoken here, Just words, not sentences... But still it's a good improvement.
I am no beginner when it comes to French. I have been tested at a B2 level (advanced intermediate) but I found this difficult. The last few days I have repeated the first 4 dialogues and have found them easier every time as I am more able to distinguish the individual words and phrases.
i'm italian, i studyed a little bit of japanese and it is a freaking complicated language... i decided to stop for a moment with japanese and try something else. Casually i ended up here, i'd never studyed french in my life and i can understand a good part of it, EUROPEAN LANGUAGES I LOVE YOU
I hadn't formally studied French since high school which was a very long time ago for me. I gave up on continuing to learn because I greatly struggle with auditory comprehension. I practiced with this video on a whim after not practicing for a few years. I did only two semesters of high school French 30 years ago and I am shocked at how much I was able to understand from listening to and how much I could recall from reading with this video. This video inspired me to pick up French again and stick with it, and I will stick with FrenchPod. Merci beaucoup!
I had watched this video when i was doing A1 level and at that time i didn't able to pick any words. But now i have completed A2 and now i find the words are very clear and able to understand it. I think everyone needs to be patient and keep practicing. The more vocab you build the more it gets easier to speak and understand french.
Ce n’est pas pour les débutants. C’est trop difficile pour eux! Aussi: Je ne suis pas français, mais j’étudie le français à mon école! Je suis dans dixième année! Merci pour ton temps! Avoir une vie encroyable!
Gabriela,u r doing r good job there. I had studied a considerable degree of french grammar but was unable to escalate from those basics to preliminary speaking.
I actually found this great. I absolutely do consider this beginner level. Considering how fast French is normally spoken, and how similar a lot of the sounds are when they blend into eachother, this is a perfect way to tune your ear. I've been studying French for about three months, maybe four, and I understood most of this with ease. The intermediate video is my next challenge, that's where I'm at currently. But, I've been listening for the entire duration of my studying. I started with Pimsleur, a method that forces you to listen. I used Assimil, and drilled the CDs until I recognized every word, you absolutely have to put at least half of your efforts into listening, because this is exactly what you're looking forward to as a mere beginner: fast, flat, infused sentences. No pitch accent like English, nasals that slightly differ, and plenty of words that end without their letters being pronounced. This is the easiest language to read, write, and learn the grammar. I consider this the hardest for listeners though, absolutely. I understand more Japanese from two weeks of study, because I can dissect the phonetics. Same with Spanish, not to mention I've heard it my entire life, and German as well, given that it is articulated with every letter, and there are maybe five dipthongs. French is the hardest language to speak, because it's the hardest to listen. I promise you that other top languages will be a breeze (as far as listening) after you pick up this beautiful flow of words
I have studied french in school from 2nd grade, and I am in 10th grade now. I really wanna learn it and I wonder why I know english almost like a native (I started studying it in 1st grade) and I am still far from knowing French as well. Could be because I learned lots of English from games and stuff, but anyway. This is hard for me so far. Some words are used in different contexts than we are taught, I don't know some, or I either can't understand because of the accent. But I'm really starting to work on it.
So I've been doing duolingo lessons in french for 200 and something days now, and i can close my eyes and understand the context, but most word go over my head still. Most of the days of duolingo were just to keep the streak going, i imagine if i would be better if i actually did it right!
absolute beginners? damn the first 6 minutes I had to pause every now and then to confirm what i was listening to. definitely not beginners but its good practice regardless

Such a shame. So off-putting for beginners and even intermediate students.

Unfortunately, most of these programs don't understand what level "beginner" actually is. A lot of this vocabulary definite'y isn't "beginner-level."

I'm learning French by watching videos in English being a native speaker of Spanish (I’m uruguayan).Me re sirve, muy bueno !!
Even though it`s for abosulte beginners, I still need to learn a lot of vocab.
Darn I learned French for 4 years and I can understand Japanese better which I started a few weeks ago lol
Sniper Hawk maybe because you enjoy learning Japanese more than French?

Sniper Hawk aww goood! My bad understating.
Because Japanese has an easy listening difficult, French is hard even for me and I'm Italian, so I live near France and the language is similar.
Uh....

Khaliq Tankard What did you do to practice?
Ocean Anderson Well I like a lot of french music. So what I did was listen to a lot of french music and Pair the words with the written lyrics. I also searched the words I didn’t know. The speed is perfect, believe me you will learn a lot with these videos
Hapmaplapflap gap all I know is livre and the small words

You need to increase the volume.
I’ve been taking French for a few years and don’t understand everything they’re saying. I can kind of make out what they’re doing but this is not for absolute beginners at all. Make it way easier for them.
Don't be disappointed because it's not an appropriate one for absolute beginners. You need more vocab than you have.
这是给初学者的?!有点难吧。Is this for 'Absolute Beginner'? C'est difficile.
I know, in my grade seven class we are doing listening exercises and there are not this hard, I have been learning French for around three years but I only started enjoying it and trying around a month ago using dou lingo and such. This is not begginer 100%
