    This is pretty good for a 1st gen model. I personally would wait for the 2nd gen when they will surely make many small adjustments/improvements to make it even more compelling. Lenovo is really hitting it out of the ballpark. I've been tracking gaming laptops for a few years now and, maybe due to my professional background, the Lenovo Legion models of the last couple of the years are clearly the best combination of performance, features and clean/professional styling for people like me. The gamer-only types may not care much about the Legion styling and may prefer the Asus ROG, Razer, Alienware styling but it's pretty clear Lenovo has captured the market segment that includes me and I can see that companies like HP are now trying hard to copy Lenovo's formula. Wouldn't be surprised to see a 14.5" Legion Slim 7 next year that will take on not just the Asus G14 but also, to an extent, the MBP 14".

      I’m a medical student, and I haven’t had a gaming laptop in years. I placed an order for the Legion Slim 5 14” due to the screen, actually!
      My priorities are
      1) Studying and decent battery life in lecture
      2) Good color gamut for photography and graphics design / content creation (surprisingly important in med school!), reading pathology images
      3) MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS / MATLAB / TENSORFLOW for clinical and basic research, important for applying to residency
      4) occasionally kicking it back and rewarding myself with a gaming study break

Currently having an M1 Mac air & 3060 windows desktop, I guess it can replace both with one machine + one external moitor. Very nice build. I don't do games. • @TheCrazyscale
      @TheCrazyscale 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@hschokker86 Yes, right after I put the above comment. I am quite satisfied with this laptop. Two things to note. 1. HDR is not complete. When watching youtube with monitor HDR ON, HDR content is fine but non-HDR contents tend to go very bright in full screen mode. I couldn't resolve this in the end, so simply turn ON/OFF HDR manually. 2. Hybrid GPU sucks.. I mean really... Driver choose which one to use automatically which makes flickering and that's very annoying. This happens very often. SO I stick to dGPU mode only with power cord ON always. Other than these two flaw-like things, this slim notebook does everything faster than my desktop with less noise and heat, I totally like it. Thank you.

    I am between this slim 5 14 inch and slim 7 16 inch both with 7840hs, 32 GB RAM, and rtx 4060. The only downside of Slim 7 is its weight. it weighs 2176g and reaches 3kg with its charger. I take my laptop in the backpack to work almost 3 days a week, But it has some advantages over Slim 5 14-inch like USB 4, better speakers, and G-Sync.
    BTW, all reviewers reported that Slim 5 14-inch weighs 1732g whereas you show almost 2kg weight for it.

      Funny, same here, also taking the Slim 5 16 inch in as there is a reasonable offer in a store here (Netherlands) with a 4070 inside, but only 16GB of memory. I am leaning towards the Slim 7 16-inch, as it's has several benefits (better screen, RGB keys are an option, i can make it 32GB of memory, nicer housing etc.) Of the 14-inch i hate glossy screens, OLED is very nice but that gloss spoils it. And 16-inch is a bit nicer, more immersive when gaming in comparison to 14-inch.

    Look how reflective that screen is. In the UK I'd have to wait over 6 weeks to get the 32GB RAM model. Also the below average battery life was also something that concerned me. Ended up going for the 2022 Asus G14 6800s I found for a mere £1099 brand new. Or £1200 with 4 year warranty. Still keeping my eye out for 4000 series laptops, because I'm not sure if AMD graphics will suffice for my workflow. One thing i like about the Slim 5 is the dual NVME. I'm much more comfortable dual booting Linux on a second SSD.

    I really like this kind of raw first impressions hands on experience video. The OLED really pulls me in, but I have a few concerns. In your video it looked like I saw some screen tearing in game. Was that caused by camera? Or did you notice it in real as well? It doesn't seem to have Gsync right? Also the OLED seems to have a plastic cover instead of glass.
    Alternative I'm looking at is Asus Zenbook Pro 14 OLED which seems to have same OLED screen in a smaller lighter package and seemingly better build? (more metal). But more battery draining Intel and perhaps smaller package means less cooling? So can't run as well on quiet mode? When speccing the Lenovo to the same specs it's a 400 euro difference. Not sure if it's worth it. Comparison would be awesome since these are the only 2 with this 14 inch high refresh OLED.

    • @TechGuyBeau
      @TechGuyBeau  9 месяцев назад

    I am thinking of buying this laptop but I just have 2 things holding me back:
    1 - Does Lenovo have Pixel Refresh and Pixel Shift options like ASUS OLED laptop have to increase the longevity of the screen and prevent screen burn in (mainly because of the HUD on long gaming sessions), I would want my screen to last at least 4 years and I havent found any of this options on the Lenovo Vantage online.
    2 - I am worried about the fact that the hinges are suported in the plastic palmrest/deck (I dont understand why Lenovo just didnt make all metal chassis). Do you feel like the hinges are solid and rigid and there is no plastic bending or rattling? My last gaming laptop was a MSI and those hinge horrible designs give me PTSD with fixing the hinges on a plastic surface that broke 2 times in 2 years of use. I would also want for the hinges to last me at leats 4 years.
    This seem the perfect gaming/work laptop compromise for me but I just have this doubts preventing me from buying it because I am worried about longevity. (Especially because in my country Lenovo Support and RMA is so slow and painfull)

I was looking some of the thermal image tests of 14" HP elitebook's and Lenovo ThinkPad's, the hotspots are up to +55c around top most key row. You can set to dim the display in Vantage or just set external monitor as active turning off primary.

    how long does it take for lenovo to ship?

    • @TechGuyBeau
      @TechGuyBeau  9 месяцев назад

      Depends on your country. These came from China to Canada in about 10 days. If I order and they come the USA usually only a few days

      okay thanks! I am from the US and I placed my order yesterday which was a saturday and they have not updated my order's shipping status, it is still "waiting to be shipped" with no estimate. I am guessing that they only start shipping on business days.@@TechGuyBeau

      @@TechGuyBeau I found a spec sheet pdf on Lenovo website that mentions AMD Freesync in the display features, but other people have said it does not appear as an option in Nvidia control panel and can only function when outputting to an external display over HDMI. Be good to get some clarity from Lenovo on this, high refresh rate high resolution displays need VRR.

    How can I get to that power on the 4060? In performance mode, I only get around 50-60 watts, which means that with drops in supply the fps also drop exponentially. For example, in Hogwarts Legacy, when the GPU drops to 45 watts, the FPS drops from about 80-90 to 20-30, which screws up the experience.
    On the other hand, thank you very much for your videos, they have reinforced my decision to buy this device instead of the Zephyrus G14 2023 (I come from 2021) and I couldn't be happier.

      something seems wrong here. the Legion slim should be hitting around 100 watts on performance mode, 85 watts on balanced, and 60 or so on silent
      are you using an official power supply?

    • @frnnchu
      @frnnchu 6 месяцев назад

      @@TechGuyBeau Yes, original charger. The laptop is only 1 week old, it is new.
      According to MSI Afterburner, GPU1 ~30 watts (swings), GPU2 (4060) ~56 watts. In all three modes, consumption is the same, although the speed of the fans does vary. dGPU mode but I have also tried "Automatic Hybrid". And I have also tried GPU Acceleration and no.
      The only thing I can think of is that MSI Afterburner is measuring wrong.
      Any ideas? Thanks again.

      Ok, after trying several things, I have completely uninstalled the graphics drivers and reinstalled them, now LEGO Fornite in Performance mode, with the charger plugged in, shows me over 100 watts of charge, which does correspond to your measurements . Hogwarts Legacy is a little poorer (and with more oscillations), I suppose it may be due to worse optimization.

      Spoiler for my next videos. It can run on SILENT with those settings.
      typically I play 1800p, quality DLSS, ultra presets.SILENT mode. That gets me 60fps
      On balanced mode you don’t need dlss at all to hit 60.
      I play… a lot of baldurs gate
