That’s just like dusty crophopper’s engine start up, except dusty is a 1988 Air tracktor crop duster but that does remind me of his start up and, I love the sound of the turboprop start ups
The movie people who did sound effects for PLANES contacted me and wanted to record various airplane sounds, for free, at my expense for fuel, aircraft time, and labor. And that’s why I don’t have a credit in the film.
Back in the early 1970s there was a CAC 18 (Australian built P51) in Sydney, being fitted with a Rolls Royce Dart turboprop, from a Vickers Viscount I believe. I saw the aircraft, but I am not sure if it ever flew. Cavalier proposed a modified P51 with a Dart, as it entry for a light armed reconnaissance aircraft contract, which was finally won by the Bronco.
This P-51 mustang is a 70% scale mustang originally designed by Jim Stewart. This particular mustang was built by Bob Wahl in Spruce Creek in Florida near Daytona. This airplane is all aluminum just like the real 51s. He tried to fly it with the chevy big block, but he didn't like the way it performed, and then decided to put the Walter 601 turbine in place of the big block engine. I helped him do a little work on the air intake one weekend, and when it was finished, it flew very well, and then he was very happy with the plane. I got some good video one year when he flew it to Jimmy Leeward's in Ocala during a BBQ fly in. Bob passed away some years ago, and the mustang was sold. I miss seeing it fly.
The sales specs claim vne 505 mph, be interesting to get figures on altitude performance. This modification could be a commercial proposition with the turbine - will they go into production I wonder?
There was actually a fire-breathing version of the P-51 made by Piper -- called The Enforcer -- that was considered for use as a close-support craft. Never caught on, but it was an interesting idea nonetheless.
It's kit Mustang because the gun ports are missing and the scale is slightly less of the plane itself, granted it wasn't that big to begin with, it's still too small to be the "real McCoy". Just saying....
Yes but do keep in mind many of the modified P-51 mustangs have shortened and or complete wings grafted on. The fastest prop plane in the world flying “voodoo” is a P-51 with new wings added..
NordicPride970 that’s no where near a real P-51. You can tell by looking at it. It’s way smaller and shorter. That’s a Thunder Mustang with a Walters Turbo Prop on it
Got sold a couple years back, maybe 4, and there is a you tube guy Elliott who was flying it and made more videos or it in flight but that was last I’d seen if it.
+stealhty1 No he is not, a free shaft turbine will not overheat in feather unless the power turbine is prevented from spinning all together for EXTENDED periods. Some 50-100 seater turboprop airliners use one engine as an APU and have a prop brake that prevents the prop from spinning and they just use the engine generator as an APU generator.
The prop is set flat early in the startup sequence for shaft resistence which helps build compression in the gas generator. Later the prop is set fine to free rotation and build up revs.
@@jasonacsalesltd That's a really dependable engine. The right weight, the right size, the right horsepower and a history of simplicity and longevity. I just wish they weren't so expensive. Considering how many there are out there.
IT'S NOT A TRUE MUSTANG! it's on the 3/4 scale I think, with a turbo prop. I think. which must be a ROLLS ROYCE model DART.there were experiences. after the war with the P-51 H. with this type of engine! it is, without a doubt, very attractive......easy to board, due to its low height (that's why I believe in the 3/4 or 5/8 scale!). and a long nose, asking for the zigzag, to see the running track. PT6 is an incredible turbine engine.....but, WHO IN THE HELL would hang one on a mustang ? You may as we'll bolt on fixed landing gear and swing a two blade prop ! Sorry but that is a disrespect to the greatest warbird of all time. I hope you kicked your own ass
I know this comment was 7 months ago, but there was actually a variant of the P-51 powered by a turboprop engine. Look up the Piper PA-48 Enforcer. The ultimate development of the Mustang, it was intended to be used as a close-air support/counter-insurgency aircraft. However, the Air Force never purchased it.
Well of course I know this is a Thunder Mustang. Even if I didn't notice that it's smaller than a real Mustang, where are the rivets on the fuselage and wings. This plane doesn't need them because its made from fiberglass
A turboshaft in a P-51 makes a beautiful combination
That's a turboprop my friend.😅
@@m.hstudioproductions6642 No
Beautiful plane and beautiful engine.
I can tell just by looking that this is one of those 3/4 scale replica birds. No shame though, still a beautiful sight.
You mean the fact that it's a turbine wasn't enough?
@@cgcgundersen why not build a full scale turboprop replica it would rock
Reminiscent of the PA48 enforcer

Nice turboprop.
A P-51 with a PT-6. That solves the problem of the diminishing stocks of Merlins. And, at this point, the PT-6 probably costs less that a Merlin.
that's a fake PT-6.
That's not a pt6. I can almost bet it's a Walther 601
Now that's an interesting twist on a Stewart 51. No blasting of the piston exhaust, that would deserve a double take.

This is not that plane. This was built from the Thunder Mustang carbon composite kit.
Yea,I guess taking a closer look here it does look like a carbon copy. However, real airplanes are made of aluminum !!!!!!
That engine sounds nice
...Thats not a mustang.
Seek therapy for your rage and bigotry issues brother.
No. It does not sound nice. And it is not a mustang.
Me recuerda al Piper Enforced o Cavalier , pero parece que el motor es un PT-6 .

Technical DATA ? ?!
So now of what value is the radiator scoop other than drag ???
Cooling of the oil system for the turbine
That sir, is gorgeous.
Only two built with turboprops-- both for sale, as far as I know there isn't a plan to resume production of the kits.
Pretty airplane but it sounds like a Dash-8.
Because it’s a turboprop
What’s the purpose of that cooling scoop since you’re running turboprop?
It’s for looks obviously..they want it to mimic the real thing
that's the air conditioning scoop...
It’s already part of the airframe, kinda hard to just “remove” it
Matt Jacomos yeah probably. That a good place to put the air cycle machine and pre cooler.

Turboprop p51? That's just silliness.
paint it yellow and blue put a spray bar on it and weve got the new model launch from Air Aractor the AT 510
Now, that is a screamer like my ex.
Honestly with the 75 hours on the airplane today, shes never been fully wrung out. We're looking for a buyer who might want to do that.
Don't forget your chute.
How fast does she go?
Im in love
That is probably a 50% scale mustang that is offered in a kit. But yes, nobody takes a merlin out of a mustang.
Any videos of this ship in the air?
Go to Elliot Seguins channel. He did the testing on the aircraft. Plenty of flight videos
Is this the Mustang that is kept over at Threshold Aviation located off of 26L and C?
+fed8925 I have not seen it recently, but if it matches these colors yes. It was for sale if you have an interest.
+Jason E I would love to own that beauty. Although I haven't been able to finish my tailwheel endorsement nor am I type rated to fly in a turbine.
check out the old waco in the backround, looks like the franklins misteryship?

Carbon Fiber scaled down replica.
