This movie was absolute shit, Pure, unadultered, quite literally impossible to watch shit. That being said... these practical effects deserved an Oscar. What a sad fucking waste of talent.
It wasn't DP Daniel Pearl mistake at least. I wonder what did he think about the color grading they ended up using in the final version. I watched it last night again. I haven't watched it for over a decade. And yeah... It's sad. You can see how very well done are the practical effects and the Alien details... They really fucked it up.
It's pretty amazing how well all the muscles move and so convincingly too. I never would have thought the Xenomorph would look good in clear lighting, especially in action.
The guys who made this movie were SFX experts before that and you can see that... or should I say you _could_ see that if the lighting wasn't completely fucked up.
@@yarpen26 Actually the directors of the film worked in VFX which in their field was pretty much exclusively digital rendering and computer animation. These practical effects were the work of Amalgamated Dynamics.
+Jose Lopez I know that, what I mean is that it feels like they got an actual xenomorph from space to do the movie for them. The movements are so life like I don't even see the actor on the suit and puppeteers anymore
Well this debunks the story that the reason the movie was so darkly lit was to hide the Alien and Predator suits because they looked bad due to budget restraints. Makes it all the more upsetting that it didn't have to be ruined like it was.
That suit looks fraggin' terrifying without even trying (What's odd is to see it in a movie-set environment)! I assume that that's the director of photography complaining about the lighting in that particular scene (which is interesting to note because there's a whole section of the movie that's woefully underlit).
Judging from this set, it's very possible that the darkness was a result of color correction and poor lighting placement. This scene is bright as fuck to the point where the video camera recording the crew in action is almost clipping, so the shadows may have been added and crushed in post.
Excellent work on the set, but why is there light here but still dark in the actual shot? Seriously it looks more terrifying jumping through the window and being able to see it move like that. Freaky shit. :D
That same scene in the movie was bland as fuck but this cut actually scared the shit out of me. And this is _behind the scenes_ footage, I mean, how the hell do you even do that?
+Chris Ashton but I don't care about "im pizza gay, I wan ma kul gal", but I liked Wolf because "I'm a badass old freaking predator!! I will do the cleaning job" and the theorys arount the hybrid
Cool xenomorph. Kind of a callback to the Cameron film. Having it in a suburban setting, on Earth, as the monster that bursts through your window, is just wrong lol. Thats some "Critters" level story telling right there. (Note: I loved Critters, but its a different kind of sci-fi).
This was a horror flick and honestly, I didn't expect a groundbreaking script. But this one sucked on just so many other levels. Teenagers in an Alen/Predator movie? Sorry, this isn't Jason or I Know What You Did Last Summer. And if you really had to have some in it, could you at least make sure they had any talent to talk about? And this lighting, I mean, fuck my mother...
Bro imagine being the predalien. That would have been the sickest job ever in a stunt man’s career. Like that would be awesome to be the guy in that suit
I didn't mind the darkness in the movie (especially since I now have the Blu-Ray which fixes much of that issue), but damn those scenes and the Alien's design look amazing in the light.
+al112v5 the worst part is that the trailers looked great, but for some reason the final edit of the movie is pitch dark... whoever did the color correction on that film must be really embarrassed, all these amazing costumes were wasted for no good reason, even the day scenes are pretty dark
I heard somewhere that the movie wasn't that dark in theaters but on dvd and blu ray the lighting is way too dark to point where it's nearly unwatchable. But I can't say for sure, I didn't see the film in theaters, only on dvd.
Horrible (lack of) lighting! I couldn't make out anything almost all the time, i thought my TV set had some kind of trouble! We are talking pitch black in action scenes! It's probably not the DP's fault, the Strause brothers (the directors) messed up big time in post production.
I don't know shit about filmmaking but I don't really think that you can do much about lightning in post-production. What are you gonna do if it's pitch black on the tape that you have, just crank up the brightness? I'm pretty sure you have to take care of it while the cameras are still rolling. Post-production is mostly about the editing of shots as well as sound, the visuals (save for the CGI) should already be more or less ready to ship at this point.
The Alien design itself is obviously inferior to the original trilogy, but even here what ADI fully do and I have respect for is making the thing look alive and convincing. All of that goodness was washed out of view in the final product
It’s kind of sad that the DoP for this film shot the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which had night shots filmed at a ridiculously low film speed of 25 ASA, but were lit and exposed just right compared to this film.
The jump was amazing, but you can CLEARLY see some very bad questionable and wrong things surrounding this whole production just from this short video itself, like when the actors were going in on each other and then nobody gives them ANY actual direction so after a while they stop and then people tell them to keep going, which wasnt necessary at all, so they needlessly start acting again... makes me laugh 😅. Also the guy telling them to use the flashlight and they didnt have it and he eyerolls so bad LMAO, that movie is a disaster, i wish we could watch a whole documentary about the BTS of it all.
I think they should've gotten someone who has a real taste for lighting, not someone who has done music videos.I mean,I love daniel C.pearl for his work on texas chainsaw, but this is one we can all agree is not his best.
It's unreal how badly they fucked up the lighting in this pitch black mess of a film. It's 2022 and they still haven't fixed it in post for the home releases.

@@ThatZenoGuy The AVPR head was nowhere near as complex as the original Alien/s head. It lacked the transparent cranial arch and human scull shape underneath the front of the head. Also, budgetary constraints left the human performers head in the neck region unlike the original Alien and Aliens movie. Please note, I can only speak for what I was involved with in terms of what was different. Despite the 20 plus years difference between AVPR, the design considerations were twofold. The original puppeteer/actor had a VERY slim build and small head plus he was extremely tall. The rather average size guy in the AVPR suit didn’t allow for their head to go in the Alien head. The other main consideration was budget. While. I don’t know what the measly budget was, it paled in comparison to other canon. The head I worked on was only in that one scene. Yes, you read that right. It may seem like a waste but the entirety of the Alien needed to be seen from all sides in a struggle. Another thing to note is in the production of AVPR, fog and motion blur was used along with lower lighting, to compensate for lower detail of costumes. Sometimes we had to use lots of lights (counterintuitive I know) to allow for much faster frame rates. This allowed playback at slow motion frame rate when transferring film to digital.
