I do love mine, but I have them in a wet palette and they tend to mold. I'm not sure if it's the specific brand or if all gouache brands mold. What do you think?
With regards to the teal colored acrylic paint, you bought, to save yourself a bit of money and get the exact same results you want, just mix white with a dash of cool blue and a dash of yellow, and maybe a bit more white and a dop of more blue to your liking................I use liquitex acryics in their introductory set from Blick or Jerrys Art-a Rama.
Opening art supplies is just the best unboxing videos! I remember when gouache painting was considered temporary and NOT a permanent medium! I worked on gouache pictures and after they were photographed they were tossed into the trash can! I will offer you unsolicited advice: every medium has questionable colors, the one thing that we can do as Artists is being sure that we mat and frame behind UV protective glass! Some call it museum glass. I even have had a professional grade watercolor painting suffer fade as the customer put on a wall facing a picture window and it was in full sun for hours a day! No color is that lightfast! I hope you do better with your affiliate links, I know some who add more links to products that they use on a regular basis not just in a given video. Best of luck to you.
Thank you so much! I just saw someone use some kind of wax sealer on a gouache painting to make it more stable and it blew my mind! That's going to be in my next art haul for sure!😊
@@winterwoodsstudio Dorland's Wax Medium. I have used it for my watercolor paintings and it is very good at stabilizing your paintings! I used it because I was sending my painting to Louisiana and I did not want to humidity to affect my painting! I can recommend UV glass, but I never ship glass anymore as It always breaks!
@@winterwoodsstudio I have used several different brands of wax but can only recommend Dorland’s it simply is the best one and I have learned my lesson that sometimes you have to use the best. It was not the most expensive either! So that is not always the best test! Best of luck!
I have that same palette for my gouache. I've put my Holbien Acryla gouache in it, and it is really very much looser than other gouache I have. I made the mistake of knocking mine off the table and it landed face down. It was locked, but a bunch made its way to the top of the silcone seal and when I pulled it off, a lot of unwanted color mixing took place. The moral of that story is to always keep your palette right side up! Good luck in your endeavors!
P.S. It’s always good idea to put all watercolor and gouache under a lot special glass that protects it from uv light….it’s called “museum quality glass”. It’s not that expensive and many truly great artists use it for their paintings. I’ve seen some of them use pigments that some people have made huge issues about on some RUclips channels (but, they are usually not members of any watercolor society’s associations, etc) and the painting should STILL not be placed in direct light…. There’s always a “workaround “ anything you paint and want to hang…. Sorry for rambling on…I know you are aware of this but just wanted to remind and reinforce… Love the pencils!! Can’t wait to see what you think of them!!! I’m thinking about trying gouache and heavy body acrylics. I’ve collected most of the acrylics (Liquitex?-artist quality) and have a few tubes of gouache. I’ve got tons of oil paints (too many)….. If I ever decide to destash I will contact you
Yes, I wish everyone knew about the UV glass! I definitely think it should be mandatory! I'm thinking about trying the heavy body acrylic too! I have the golden fluid acrylics and the Liquitex soft body acrylics, so they are both pretty watery. I'm wondering if the heavy body might be easier to use? If you try it, please let me know your thoughts! And thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment! I appreciate it!
I need those hardbords, too. I have something similar that is actually the bottom of my file cabinet that fell off when I moved. 😂 Yeah, I need to fix that.... I have a few of those clip boards in medium and large sizes, too, but I didn’t know about hardbord.
I really like the look of your art studio, it's in a disarray and obviously well used. Very real depiction of how art studios are in real life. Thank you for sharing!
Test the Winsor Newton gouache. The reds aren't lightfast.I'm not sure the Cadmium Free Red is lightfast either. But I still want that set. So lucky you ;-). Daniel Smith is the only company that sells all lightfast gouache. Himi is surprisingly not worse than the others. Their purples use fluorescent dies aren't light fast, but Holbein uses fluorescent pigment in some of their purples too.
I do know that in the past Winsor and newton's gauche was not light fast. I did reach out to the company before I bought the set and they said they made a lot of improvements and changes over the last decade and gave me a list of the ones that were light fast which I what I purchased, except for one of the reds, which was not. That being said, I don't completely trust any big company. I do think I might do some lightfastness testing myself! And thank you so much for all of your info! I really appreciate it!
I had trouble with acrylics when I started until I learned to mist them every once in awhile. Also, you can mist them and cover with Saran Wrap when you stop to eat or overnight and will keep for about 3 days with misting once a day.
I’ve been using acrylics for years and when they start to dry out I just mix in some water, you’re right it works. I just think acrylics take getting used to
What fun orders! I got a tin set of the Faber Castell coloured pencils for Christmas. I’ve never had such a nice set of pencils (it’s hard to spend that much money on a single supply lol). My family did the same and gave me gift cards for our local art store, looking forward to using them! Good luck growing your channel!
Only two of the polychromos pencils are less than fully lightfast. Both three and two stars are completely lightfast, three stars to 100 years, and two stars to 50 years. Fun haul, thanks for sharing.
Wow… I learned some things just watching this “box opening” video! I am ordering an air tight pallet for our next trailer trip which will be for 2 or 3 weeks!
Yes. Amazon and Jeff Bezos are horrible! I’m glad you mentioned it as you did. That’s rough being so far away from any stores. I think Dick Blick is great. My mom, who was an artist, would buy from them. I do too sometimes. So they dropped the Dick from their name. Well it’s still Dick Blick to me. 😊
Ha ha! Same! I always want to say Dick Blick! They are my favorite! And owned by a single family. They have great customer service and when I order from them, even with their free shipping, it only takes two days to get here!
Thank you for doing a video where you speak to the camera and show your supplies. The ones that are a view from the top that show their hands flipping around are really difficult to watch! New subscriber
Thank you so much! I love ALL the art supplies! It's a problem! 😂 But it's so much fun to play with them. And I find it really helpful when I'm feeling blocked to switch mediums! Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leave a comment!
I don't think the Himi ones are lightfast at all. They're student grade paints that were designed with art students in mind--hence the amount you get in each cup and why the set is fashioned the way it is for ease of accessibility.
I agree with you!❤ I think they're maybe a little chalky too compared to the Winsor and newton gouache? What do you think? Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I put the middle palette on my jelly gouache, then pop the whole tray into a snap lock bag, then click the top lid on… mine are still fairly juicy and not mouldy even 21+ months later, no glycerin or water used ‘cos the snap lock bag keeps it airtight
Loved this vid and subscribed because I liked your art on your insta-profile. Just a little hint: it would be a little more personal if you look in the camera instead of looking on the display of your camera the whole time.
Thank you! I'm still learning. And my camera stops filming after ten minutes so I'm constantly afraid that it will cut out and I won't notice... Maybe someday I can get a nicer camera! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! I really appreciate it!
Lightfast is whether or not a pigment will fade over time. The more light fast the pigment is, the longer it will stay bright. There are some reds, blue, and purples that will fade in just a year or two. Some pigments will lose their color completely and turn brown or gray. I try to only paint or use light fast mediums because I want my paintings to stay bright and pretty for a long time. Hope that helps!
