What is the Connection Between Rastafarians and Emperor Haile Sellassie

    Emperor Haile Selassie, who ruled Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, died in 1975, but he lives on through the romantic lyrics of the late Jamaican reggae star Bob Marley and Ethiopian pop star, Tewedros Kassahun, better known as Teddy Afro.
    Yet there is a wide range of views of the man whose full official title was: “His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, King of Kings and Elect of God.” Some remember him as a benevolent ruler who resisted Italian colonization. For others, he is a god, yet others view him as a tyrant.
    Marley’s portrayal of Selassie is strongly influenced by the Rastafarian belief that he is God incarnate, as allegedly “prophesied” by Marcus Garvey. On the other hand, Teddy Afro, an Ethiopian, is promoting his version of Ethiopianism (Ethiopiawinet).
    Watch this episode as Dr. Bunmi shared insight into the topic.

    My great great grandfather, Joseph Mathunye Kanyane Napo, founded the African Church in 1888 and teamed up with Mangena Mokone to establish the Ethiopian Church in 1892. Like the founders of the African Methodist Episcopal church in America about a century earlier, these men were also inspired by Psalm 68:31. I consider them as the fathers of Pan Africanism in South Africa and should be recognised as such. Their names appear in Minkah Makeleni's writings.

    Thanks for sharing and getting people familiar with the king of kings. A couple of corrections to keep the record straight. He was born Lidj Teferi mekwenen (makonen) which means the free born child, born without sin. Ras is a rank like a Regent or Duke. His full title at this stage was Inderasè Bale Siltan Ras Teferi . Which is Prince directly in line to the throne also Regent with full authority to handle all of Ethiopa's Affairs. Even Muslim revere his extraordinary birth, which also coincidences with Rev ch 12. The imperial symbol that you speak of is seen by many but truly understood by a few. This represents his Heraldry. It is also the coat of arms for Christian Ethiopia, the triple crown represents the Father Son and the Holy Spirit. Underneath is the Bible (opened ) , the three Ethiopian Fidels (letters ) means Alpha and Omega. The two archangels are Michael and Gabriel, this is also Ex ch 25 the throne of the most high on the Ark in the Tabernacle . At the bottom it says Conquering Lion of Judah, with the Lion carrying the Cross of Calvary representing Christ victory over Death. I look forward to see if you do a follow up episode with more of the unknown knowledge to corroborate about our history and help those who are searching to find truth. Would love to hear a episode about the Housa people and their family ties to ancient Ethiopia. Give thanks

    Rastafarians consider H. I. M. Selassie I to be a member of the Solomonic Dynasty from the Union of Solomon (wa) and the Queen of Sheba.
    Ethiopia is now considered by some authorities to be the first nation to adopt Christianity as an official religion in the early 3rd Century AD.
    H. I. M. is also admired by Rastafarians for his regal bearing and attire (both are praised in many reggae songs and his outfits are emulated for special occasions); for being a leader of an African Christian nation with a strong Judaic tradition (Rastafarianism is a mixture of both, and the official Ethiopian Orthodox Tawahedo church is the official church for many Rastas with branches in countries with a strong Rasta culture like Jamaican and Trinidad); for leading his troops into battle during the 2nd Italian Invasion in the mid 1930's and for his prophecy that European countries would soon suffer the same fate as Ethiopia due to the European nations' failure to resist the military aggressions of Fascist Italy, which came true;
    for his work in bringing the African continent together through being a driving force and foundation member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) formed in 1963 and headquartered in his capital Addis Ababa;
    for providing military training and assistance and refuge for several freedom movements in Africa especially Mandela's ANC.
    His visit to Jamaica the home of Rastafarianism was a source of great pride to the Rastas.
    H. I. M.'s titles (Lion of the Tribe of Judah etc) and royal symbols figure heavily in Rastafarian culture.
    His speech before the United Nations General Assembly on October 4 1963 about the proliferation of worldwide conflict and injustice was turned into a hit reggae song "War" by Jamaican Rastafarian reggae superstar Bob Marley and released on his hit 1976 album "Rastaman Vibrations".
    Many Jamaican reggae artistes sing about H. I. M. and or include his images, symbols in their record artwork etc.

You are already on a path that's why you ask the questions, your patience will be tested also and you must keep on with your desire to know, there is a man you might of heard of called jiddu krishnamurthi, he wrote a book called the ending of time with a man called david Bohm, it is about moving past time and thinking, because thinking implies time, whilst insight is instant, if you ever have the chance to read this book you should do so, it will greatly help you understand how spending a lifetime acquiring knowledge is no comparison to the insight of the universe, being able to simply know in an instant is the highest of human ability, like Robert Marley would say, "who feels it knows it more" its insight over thinking and when the universe opens this door you will know it and you will feel it opening, so keep on brother

    During the war against certain conquerors the Jamaicans refused to cut their hair until the battle of Ethiopia was won. Then Locs became a style.... then later a way of life and religion, rastafari.
    The Ethiopians and Sallasie defeated their battles and gave birth to the term. Conquering Lion!

    Rastafarians couldnot endure the racism in the West and moved to the only "free" country that participated the scramble of Afrika but unfortunately didn't know that was enslaving over 50 million none Amhara natives and were resettled in a land its owners were forcibly displaced

    Lenard Percival Howell is the first rasta and is a Garveyite. He traveled around Europe and got into Marxism, When he returns he sets up a community in the Hills. Marijuana use was influenced from the Hindu's in Jamaica as he was looking for a reincarnated God and ways to develop their 'livity' at this point, none of that community have dread locks. (So you dont need to have a lock to be a rasta).

    Thanks to Dr. Bunmi for her presentation, would like to add however our faith is not based on belief but in visions and dreams and in other instances where he talks to us just as He did with Samuel in the Bible. Christ when he was working great miracles among the people ask the twelve disciples, 'who do men say that I' am?, and they answered, ''some say you are Elias, some say John the Baptiste. He asked them, ''who do you say that I am?. Peter answered, the son o the living God. Christ answered, f''flesh and blood hath not revealed this to you, only my Father can reveal this to you. He ask them these questions because he knew even among the twelve there were doubters. People difficulty in seeing what we the Rastafarians declare is not surprising and is based on the false doctrine that God is a spirit, for God said he made man in his own image and likeness. That's why He taught us to pray,Our Father, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. HAILE SELASSIE I is the fulfillment of that prayer and is is suppportd by Psalms87, ''behold!, Philistia and Tyre with ETHIOPIA this MAN was born there. SELAH. HAILE SELASSIE I
