Well, I never thought that one day I would move on a sailboat to travel the world, let alone make a video about it! But here we are :)
In the last two years, we received tons of questions and messages from people wanting to do the same, so I thought I’d share everything I know with you!
PSA: this video is based on our own experience, it is obviously not THE only way to do it! :)
In this video, we go through how to become a full time liveaboard sailor when you haven’t even been on a sailboat, how you can learn how to sail, how you can build experience, my best boat buying tips, how to find friends in the sailing and cruising community (and why it is important).
We also (quickly) cover budgeting for a sailing adventure, how to make an income as well as a very underrated topic, which is how to manage emotions that come with changing lifestyle.

What a great episode. Our two favorite lines: "The boat doesn't get bigger," and "We may not be rich but we have a rich life." We're not ready to follow in your footsteps, but we do like the idea of crewing on others boats. Glad you're getting ready to be reunited with Polar Seal.

We are calling the realtor Monday to talk about selling our house. I'm so full of anxiety about this, so I'm glad I found your channel. It made me feel better about buying a boat. My husband was in the navy and I used to sail as a little girl, but this will be the first we'll be in charge of our own boat, so we're treating ourselves as complete newbies

Sailing ain't gonna happen for me; the wife thinks I'm crazy for watching sailing videos. Hey, I'm soaking in the human interest and cultures around the world. There are few people that speak as much wisdom in such an eloquent yet captivating manner. Your words "We may not be rich but we have a rich life." are the antidote to modern life, the cure, the missing piece of the puzzle.

I sailed the world for about 5 years on a muchhhh bigger boat but same concept. Its wonderful and as I get older I find myself missing the smell of the sea quite a bitt. I hope everyone in this comment section can get to experience that at least for a bit. Hope life is kind and you can find a way because nothing like being out in the middle of an ocean on a full moon. If anyone here gets a chance the most beutiful sunsets you will ever see are actually in the Persian Gulf. Go about 20-30 miles out sand makes a beautiful red/pink haze.

Funny how you found your French boat in Sweden - but I suppose I found my Swedish boat in the Netherlands; less that 3 years ago, I bought my Hallberg-Rassy 38, built in 1983 in NL.
I started from scratch too, having never sailed before and I agree with much of what you say other than a couple of things.
Firstly, I commissioned a specialist to help me find the right boat, working through where I would be sailing her. He used to be a delivery skipper and he knows his stuff. After realising I needed to sail outside the Mediterranean Sea, he steered me away from French, flat sterned, lightweight med boats (sorry, includes your's in that list) and towards something designed for the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. He coordinated things for me as I had no knowledge of which countries NOT to buy a boat in, who were the pirates - and who the good surveyors are. More than commissioning ono-on-one tuition on board (and single-handing at that), hiring this man was the wisest thing I did - money well spent!
Secondly, he also recommended not going bigger than about 40 feet, even for an Atlantic crossing, because it's about the right compromise between comfort and ease of handling as it was likely I would be either single-handed or short-handed. So I have a boat that's dry and as tough as a brick out-house.but that's both seaworthy in heavy weather but not too unwieldy for single-handing. Final hint from him is also don't even look at a boat that has no backstay - and some designs don't!
One thing I totally agree with you about is don't buy an ex-charter boat because, not only can they have a tough life, they are often built to a lower price and lighter than non-charter boat; the larger charter companies can negotiate build standards dow, if they want too, to save money. Some of these boats are so light that the hulls and decks can flex noticeably in harsh, closely spaced seas.
So I have a boat as tough as a brick out-house that I've handled comfortably in 8m seas and 40 knots of wind when I copped heavier-than-forecast conditions when single-handing across Biscay. My sailing has come a long way on this boat.

REAĹLY SOPHIE, this time YOU did it. This Video you made is an absolut MASTERPIECE! Highly interesting Themes about the past of you 2 with deep insights of your previous jobs. Your HUMOR kills me and how you were able to catch it on camera is astonishing. Your 5 Points go much further and again, all in a very funny yet true way. I could write on and on... I will leave Catalania in 14 days after I was cut in the last Corona Lockdown. Before the next one arrives, I must install my addittional 2 Solarpanels, find a way to secure my overhanging hardshell dinghy on the foredeck, buy provision and head out and run. I rather be free then locked in. But your Video is an excellent piece of work. I give you my compliments and I say that as a Sailor with 30 years of experience.

Where were you before I retired in 1995, I needed your knowledge so badly. I was driving up the florida keys road, trying to decide whether to get a boat or rv to live on. Saw a cool 30 foot trawler for sale. Stopped to see if my wife would go along with the idea of moving on a boat to live. Never dreaming in a million years that she would say yes to that idea. Well she fell in love with the trawler and said buy it and we can move on the trawler. And she was not kidding. So I have had to live since then knowing that I was responsible for us not living on a boat full time for a while. You did a super great job with your video. You will cause a lot of people to be braver than I was.

excellent video in content and delivery. just one observation about "difference between blue water and non-blue water sailboats".
Best blue water boats do not have bolted on keels or exposed spade rudders, they have integrated long fin keels or are full keels. They also have rudders protected by strong skeg or the keel itself. They also have higher angles of ultimate stability before they capsize. Also, because of the hull design and construction they tend to be a less jumpy motion in waves. There are probably other reasons like larger fuel and water tanks, etc.
For me, the key, rock bottom contition is no bolted on keels and no exposed spade rudders. The bolted-on keels constantly stress the ss bolts and also the narrow area of the hull where the keel is attached. The resuld are incresing catastrophic incidents where keel falls off, boat capsizes and people die. Of course, the failure does not tend to happen in calm waters or with low wind.
Bolted on keels are also more vulnerable in impacts with floating objects of if running aground.
Spade rudders are vulnerable to impacts with floating objects, whales and when running aground. Not to mention that orcas seem to have develop an interest in having some fun with spade rudders.
Just read about it. Personally I believe bolted on fin keels and spade rudders are an aberration in cruising boats because they are based on going fast and be roomy; not safety and stability.
Beneteau, Catalinas, Bavaria, etc., are roomy beautiful boats inside, the rest is not acceptable, to me, of course.
In some cases, older blue water boats are made with solid fiberglass hull and deck; in this way they do not have the water infiltration that often happenss in "sandwich" construction. Most boats today have solid hulls below the water line and, unfortunately, have sandwich construction above water line and decks. Practically any modern design boats end up with spongy decks.
It is true, older boats, tend to be slower and you need a larger older boat to have the same room of a newer boat. But the hulls are thicker, even if not of solid fiberglass. The fiberglass hulls have proven to be extremely age resistant; they have done some strength tests; they found fiberglass strength increases slightly with aging. The hull colours and finishes can be redone, you can also renew the engine, the fridge, the sails, can retrofit in-mast or in-boom furling, chance the rigging to dynema (better than ss steel), add a new bbq. a new generator, navigation instruments, autopilot and everything else.
For example, modernized CSY 44, a Kelly-Peterson 44 and other boats are far superior for bluewater than all the modern popular stuff; they sail better in bad weather and they are built better.
Again, great video. I never noticed before that the accent of Swedes speaking English sounds a bit like French speaking English.
    Cheers!

Super advice, unfortunately I can't get my wife out of the bay without her turning green let alone to sea but on the plus side I'm getting out of the car repair business and able to follow my dream and go back to full time fishing soon

Very cute clip. PS We had our own 33' Hunter for a few years but thought it might be worthwhile to take a 6 or 7 day ASA course sailing in the Sea of Cortez on a 45' Dufour with Nautilus Sailing school. We wanted to try out something more than local coastal day sails. We loved it and recommend it for any newbies. I believe they have several locations in the Med, Bahamas & Mexico.

What a great video well done Sophie!! Here I am sitting in the comfort of my home in sunny Australia ( that means a Pacific ocean crossing) and I haven’t even sailed around my own country. I’ve considered all you’ve talked about and believe that you should start your own fashion channel. I’m trying to think of a great name for Sophie‘s sailing fashions. Anyway, it’s always a joy to watch someone who is such a positive person with an electric personality. So much so, Sophie could power the grid of a small city.
In conclusion you’re sailing & life education will never wear out. However, fashion shoes and handbags will. With regard to your home that is the bricks and sticks you may wish to make a calculation of how much interest you paid on the loan, what are the running costs, the insurance, gas, water, electricity etc and work out how long it would take to break even so don’t feel too bad about getting out of the property. Best Peter

Really good video and some pretty good advice on the whole. The one thing I would argue with is on the boat size, from personal experience, I would say buy the smallest boat which you find comfortable. Also learn to fix things yourself. It's a good idea to crew on a couple of boats and skippers, you get to learn a few tricks as you go and find your own style of sailing. I lived for 5 years onboard cruising and it is life changing.

First off, Great Presentation! Next year we will be joining you. We fly in January to look at boats. I disagree with you on what a blue water boat is, and if you need one. From my research, a blue water boat is a boat of heavy displacement, with a full keel or skeg mounted rudder, and/or a wine glass shaped hull. I am not a expert, this is just what I have learned in my search for our boat. I asked why, and I was told that these things help with comfort at sea in heavy weather. That said, if you are going to just sail trade wind routes, I doubt you would need a "blue water" boat. Many production boats have proven that they can cross oceans. I doubt that you would want to take one to higher latitudes however. Our bucket list places are all in higher latitudes, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, Tierra Del Fuego, Antarctica, Alaska, Northwest Passage... I would need someone to prove that a modern BenJenCatHun boat is capable of sailing to these areas without modification, and major repairs afterward.

You just brought tears to my eyes. I am so ready to go!!! We are (fortunately or unfortunately) in the midst of the boat buying process at this time. It appears that our luck has held and COVID gave everyone else the idea to sail on our 2 year preplanned timeline and boats in our budget are more scarce right now (I too have a bit of designer taste on a workingman's budget!). Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing you on the line somewhere in the future.

Having tried different trading platform , my last experience with Mr Nicholas is the best ever, I traded with $1000 and within a week i made profit of $9,500 and to my greatest surprise no extra charge was paid for my withdrawal. So I recommend Mr Nicholas platform for effective trade to every one. He is recommended on Instagram @nicholas__fxtrade
