  • Did you know dementia begins in the brain decades before symptoms start showing up? We can see changes in brain scans 30 or 40 years before forgetfulness and other disconcerting symptoms creep in. But I’ve seen so many patients overcome symptoms of brain dysfunction through the right diet and lifestyle changes. If our actions can have that much power to reverse some forms of brain illness, why aren’t we talking more about using them for prevention? I’ve seen people with genetic predispositions avoid a diagnosis altogether by living a conscious life.
That’s exactly what my guest and good friend, Max Lugavere, and I get into on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Max lost his mom last year to a rare disease called Lewy body dementia, which comes along with the neurodegenerative and physical symptoms of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Max is a filmmaker, health, and science journalist and the author of the New York Times bestselling book Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life. He is also the host of the #1 iTunes health podcast The Genius Life. Max is excited to release his sophomore book, The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary, a lifestyle guide to living happily and healthily with proven, research-based lifestyle tactics, which we dig into more throughout this episode.

Mark - saturated fat is Not a bad food. That is an old paradigm. Healthy grass fed protein - meat - is the most nutritious food there is. Thank you Mark and Max.

This conversation reminds me of the Polar Bear Club, a group of middle-aged people who go swimming in winter off Coney Island. Also, I think of those northern Europeans to take a sauna and then jump into a cold lake. I never understood the health benefits these people were experiencing.

I have problems with insomnia and anxiety. I dont have problems falling asleep really but I will wake at 4 or 5 am shaking, with a burning sensation all over my upper body, and sometimes throwing up. Ive had blood tests and other kinds of tests over the two years ive had this problem and had no problems. I take magnesium glycinate which helps with the shaking somewhat. When its really bad I will throw up all day for weeks which has caused me to have to get an IV. Changing my thought processes has helped greatly but I still get these problems. I also take other vitamins and have been fixing my vitamin d deficiency. What do you recommend to help

Have you gotten your b12 checked? I had similar issues and it went away, but I was taking 12,000 mcg of b12 daily for about 4 months and everything cleared up per the recommendation of my doctor. Hope you feel better!

If hyman would just ask questions and let the guest answer. Instead he has to keep putting in all these contradictory goofy ststements. U can sense the guests frustration
