What Tanjiro’s Kindness means in Demon Slayer

  • So I've been watching Demon Slayer since last season, and the most notable thing about the series aside from its amazing production is the amount of kindness weaved into its story through its protagonist, Tanjiro. At first, I took his kindness for granted, but once I was introduced to his dynamic with Inosuke and Zenitsu, the rest was history.

i mean to be fair u cant really use the "killings is bad" thing in the demon slayer universe cuz he demons are literally threats to humanity and cant control themselves. nezuko is shown to be an anomaly and the only reason yushiro is chill is cuz tamayo knew how to control and ease him into being one. so not killing a demon is not an option. in other stories usually there are other ways to stop the villains without needing to kill them and these villains end up being humans who do horrible shit but are still human so killing them with no mercy is kinda really dark for me personally. but if there is no way to stop villains but to kill them then that should be the option or else it will cause more death in the future.
like u said, i really like that tanjiro says he knows his duty and will kill demons with no hesitation but he will offer them prayer and kindness to those who are hurting and repent their actions. also i realized recently that almost none of these demons remembered their human lives clearly. i dont wanna give any more examples cuz idk if you've read the manga but it basically just proves tanjiro's line that demons are pitiful tragic creatures

      @snicksss 4 года назад +132

I agree. Using the argument that "killing is bad" is just averting your eyes from the reality of things. People who commit these crimes won't learn anything from receiving mercy in that way. I believe what Tanjiro is doing is the right way to go about it. Punish them for their crimes, and then give them a gentle release when they are fading away because in the end they were just a person in pain that received no help.

In this case, it’s just as much a “mercy killing” if anything, as he’s freeing these ppl from suffering that not even decapitation can end.
Besides, the fact that he kills quickly, and with the sole purpose of ending further suffering (both for the demons’ victims AND for the demons themselves) makes this more of a “cruelty is bad, killing is a necessary evil (& Quicks deaths are a mercy)” situation.

1:54-2:08 *hears "Man of Constant Sorrow" on my playlist running*
Honestly, how a guy like Tanjirou can go through all these troubles without breaking down before other people is a challenge in and of itself. Yet he goes a step further in putting that aside when someone else who's also going through suffering is in need of consolation. I agree with OniMaru in this analysis: this takes strength and diligence to accomplish. His overview on Tanjirou's nature was a clean cut for me. (He is my vote for best-boy in this series for that reason.)
But I do have to disagree partially with his first comment on Nezuko for the first 15 seconds into the video. Not in that she's a plot device (we can all confess that as truth), but in that her fighting nature on screen for half of her time there and her lack of a conscious mind resulting in a careless mood during her other half of time on screen only reserves her to a background character. But then again, the show is mostly in the 1st person perspective, as for a majority of the first half of the series (especially episodes 1-5,) we've only really delved into Tanjirou's P.O.V.
Though that is true at a first look (and with what we have with this first season only covering merely 1/4 of the manga so far), looking in retrospect she's very similar to her big brother Tanjirou. If you remember her at the beginning of the episode, you could see that she cares for her younger siblings as much as Tanjirou does. The only difference is now that their father passed away, Tanjirou and Nezuko had to slowly take the father-mother roles despite still being kids; Tanjirou was the working father going into town selling charcoal, and Nezuko was the nurturing mother having to watch over the kids in her mother's stead. On that fact alone, I argue that Nezuko love based on tactile skills and interaction with others is a bit more clear than Tanjirou's. Throughout their lifetime Tanjirou still is on top. But from the time their father, Tanjuro, passed away; Nezuko had to support the family interactively while Tanirou supported the family financially. Therefore, Nezuko was the one that had the more developed sibling skills for that time period.
But putting that aside, she still relies on her older brother for a lot of her needs to be met. She is his biggest role-model as a sibling. His good example as a caretaker and provider bled through into Nezuko as she started to take up that same job. And she cherishes her beloved brother for that and wants nothing less than the best for him as a token of her gratitude, appreciation, and admiration.
And both of those factors mentioned start to play out when Nezuko turned into an oni. OniMaru already stated how stricken Tanjirou must have felt when he came home to see his family slaughtered. But Nezuko? She was there. She's a strong and independent young woman as a human, but compared to Muzan (the Devil incarnate in this series) she had no chance of saving anyone yet alone manage to survive herself. We saw how she was thrown out the door with Rokuta in her arms. Based on that knowledge from Chapter/Episode 1 and her flashback in Chapter 82 of the manga, we can see that she witnessed her family massacred first hand, and that she was powerless in saving them. I believe that is the reason why she cried when she saw Tanjirou the next day; She felt she had failed her family and her big brother as the big sister, for she was overshadowed with guilt of surviving and not being able to be a factor in her family's survival. Exactly like Tanjirou. And like Tanjirou, her resolve was to at least protect the only thing she has linked to her humanity and love left, Tanjirou. When Giyuu knocked out Tanjirou after he attempted to charge at him, she retaliated and went at Giyuu as a way to ward off what she knew was a threat to the one part of her family she had left.
She then went on to play her role as big sister in a new transformed way: An older sister for the human race. Once again, this is a direct parallel to Tanjirou; Only Nezuko's motive out of defending the human race is out of justice instead of sympathy. While Tanjirou also fights for justice, Nezuko's fighting style is more emphasized in that motive for battle. She recognizes the human race as something to be protected and that oni are to be kept ways away from them at all costs. She will never forgive an oni that dares harm or consume another person. And once she's identified one of those oni, she's not turning back on that decision. She'll raise hell and eat cornbread without a second thought. Because she is not going to let any of Muzan's kind repeat what happened to the Kamado family again. Not while she's around.
[Commenter] But Vince, she's still lacking conscience. She's not as independent as she once was.
True. She's more on the reliant side of the spectrum. Especially since (as of now) she has to completely rely on Tanjirou for protection 'gainst the sun. But like how Tanjirou relies on Nezuko to push on in his mission, Nezuko relies on Tanjirou to push on in *her* mission. Her character development rest on her brother's foundation. This is brought to light in Episodes 22-23/Chapter 47 where she's tried and tempted by Sanemi at the Demon Slayer Hashira meeting. Tanjirou had to come in and verbally intervene. All he did was run to the edge of the platform and call out his sister's name. And that was enough for her to role back in time and remember why she has come so far: because she loves her family. And she still does today, in her big brother. And thanks to Urokodaki's hypnotic suggestion, she now has a duty to fulfill in defending the human race.
[Commenter] How is that like Tanjirou? This still makes her seem like a weak character if she relies on others. Not to mention her aggressive nature as a demon that kind of ruins your argument that Nezuko is an independent character not relying on others.
Well does Tanjirou not have characteristics of naivety and hesitation? He has those things holding him back as a demon slayer even to this day. And the only things that get him out of that bubble is his allies and his family. He relies on others to be his basis to fight as a demon slayer. Those things are true and honest-to-God reasons to fight. So does that make him a "weak character?" What doesn't hinder your performance or stays off to the sidelines must make you stronger.
And I'm not arguing that Nezuko's a fully independent character. No one in Kimetsu no Yaiba is truly independent. For just like in real life, all the characters in KnY rely on a motivational factor to be able to move forward. What I *am* saying is that she needs a motive to be able to fight. For what are you fighting for if you have all but a reason? You can be the strongest warrior that the world has ever known or the most frail of peasants, and still fight if you have a motive. Be it Money, Power or in the Kamado siblings' case: Love, Justice, Peace, and Salvation.
That's just my take in defense of Kamado Nezuko. I may be a little biased since I love her. But I love Tanjirou too. And you can't have one of them without the other. They are best-duo. They are what I believe siblings should be. And as an older brother in the same age group as Tanjirou, their example is something that I want to obtain. This show was one where I was finally able to find a wholesome, non-incest sibling relationship to base mine off of.
Plus, their both so adorable together! There's a reason why they're my profile picture.

He is not naive too. So many characters in shonen dont kill their enemies, resulting in horrible consequences and bullshit reformation. Demon Slayer doesnt do that. Tanjiro kills these demons, but takes a moment to extend his condolences. In death their sins have been paid, allowing kindness for them to justified. It’s more of their will, determination, and never backing down attitude. WHEREAS Tanjiro, he’s a beacon. His kindness was front and center to me from the very beginning and one of the reasons why this character resonated so much with me. He still has will, determination, resolve, etc but you can see that it’s not the driving point of his character. I've had a lot of conversations about Tanjiro and why he feels different, and what I've found is that a lot of protagonists are "kind in spite of the cost of strength", "kind in the face of danger". But Tanjiro is "strong because he is kind" he is a force not of vengeance or "need to be the greatest", but in a dramatic shift away from a lot of shonen protagonists, Tanjiro is a force of mercy. He sees the pain that demons go through but still does not hesitate to fight and kill them, he doesnt struggle to do so because to him he is bringing mercy to them, not death or hatred. That's what makes him different in my opinion.

I'll tell you why Tanjiro is so kind
    1. He knows that demons can't change the way they are it's not like all of them wanted it. They were humans who also had it hard, who had something to do or protect like Nezuko who tried to protect her little brother.
    2. He puts himself in other people's shoes like a empath would that can feel other people's emotions
    3. He doesn't ever judge anyone by their looks it's like the saying don't judge a book by its cover, but I like to add until you read the story meaning he won't ever judge you until he gets to know you as well as relate, and show the emotion that you always needed. Like comfort, love and knowing

this is exactly what makes Tanjiro one of my favourite characters. I find it so interesting that before he trained with Urokodaki, he was called weak and slow and that his sympathy for the demons is considered a weakness, but we then get to see him get stronger and learn the skills necessary to become an efficient demon slayer without losing that part of him. My heart reaches out to those demons he treats with kindness in their last moments - it's so refreshing and I honestly cry every time it happens because he still has the capacity to offer them kindness and respect, during and even after their deaths (e.g. yelling at Giyu after the battle with Rui).

I feel like this video explained it really well. Tanjiro’s kindness

I feel like people who initially don't like or understand Tanjiro as a character might have expected a different sort of shonen protagonist. He is very similar to traditional shonen protagonists in that he's brave, has strong morals and loudly speaks up, while he also has a noticeable soft and gentle side. And too often we interpret gentleness and kindness as "bland" and "weak". So I absolutely agree with you that the beauty of Demon Slayer is that it shows how this kindness is actually the biggest sign of strength- being angry and mean is much easier than retaining one's compassion, even for the enemy.

    • @riripari2042

Those are just the people who like edgy and more layered characters. Some people favor characters who aren't that morally righteous and light sided. They want a main protagonist who can show the different shades of grey. It's why characters with a trash personality like Bakugou from My Hero gets so popular. They see main characters like that and want to follow their story to see how they ultimately turn out. Honestly I myself love simple kind characters like Tanjiro who can prove that their kindness makes them far from weak.

Even if your not an older sibling u can still show people kindness weather it’s your older sibling parents grandparents, or even just a random little kid at school. Even if u suffered try to be positive and help others do they do not have to suffer as you did. It was the fact that he was nice within reason that got me really hooked on this show. Usually when you get characters as kind as Tanjiro, they want everyone to live 😑, no matter how much wrong they've done. I like that he accepts those sins and deals with it but also shows sympathizes with the other demons.
”i gotta kill you. You've kinda had it coming and it's my job to do so, but I feels for you man. R. I. P.”
I also didn't think his background was going to be that harsh. I mean... I'm not gonna lie, I started watching this because Nezuko was mad cute getting into that basket and I thought ” I have to watch this whole anime”, but it was surprisingly upsetting for me cause I got attached to his little family so quickly and then...well...y’all know.
And there was just the impression that the art left on me that just made the storyline that much better to me.
I've never been a stickler for those types of things because it ruins anime for people, but the art in Demon Slayer just spoke to my mind differently.

I remember when this series first came out, in manga form, the many international fans that read manga were so against a shounen character like Tanjirou and that he didn't deserve to be a part of the Shounen Jump franchise due to him not fitting the "standard shounen they knew or grew up with". The few of us who stood with the series until the anime announcement came was so happy that Shounen Jump picked up this series and did not drop it as it became so popular in Japan that an anime was possible. As the anime began reaching a bigger audience overseas Tanjirou became so much loved internationally as well as the series as a whole. I fell in love with this series because of Tanjirou. He's so relatable in many ways - being an eldest myself of many siblings I had to sacrifice some things in life too while growing up and even now. I don't know how long the series will go on for but I do know for sure that it's now being loved worldwide which makes me happy about it because it deserves it.

I feel like there aren’t enough “kind” main characters in media. Most cliche protagonists are determined, confident people striving to get to their goal, and while Tanjiro *is* like that, he portrays it much more realistically. He’s patient, kind, slow to speak, and simple. He’s not prideful or overly hyper, he’s simply a young man working diligently towards his goal. And, he forgives! Gosh, it means the world to me how forgiveness is a common theme throughout this show. It’s about showing compassion to those that were lead astray onto the wrong path (demons). He impacts all of the characters he meets in every way, meaning he subconsciously “kills them with kindness”. In the later arcs, they do all look up to and respect tanjiro for his compassion and he serves as inspiration in the Hashira’s final battles. Praise Tanjibro 👏

What sets Tanjirou apart from other "kind shonen protagonists" is that he's kind even compared to other good morale characters. Most "protagonists whose main personality is being nice" is only kind compared to their asshole environment, they are only seems nice because everyone else is much worse than them (coughcough haremprotagonists).
But Tanjirou is the kind of people you would genuinely look up to irl.

This analysis is very well said and also makes me reflect on my role as the oldest sibling. Sometimes it's hard to be kind and not expect anything in return because it feels like you're not acknowledged and you feel unappreciated for what you do, but I've always been willing to to sacrifice my ambitions in order for my younger ones to flourish more than myself.
1:13 is so relateable, especially with younger brothers, I'll give them their favourite pieces from my dish or just let them have some of my food, it just makes me feel happy seeing them happy.

in all that constant long history of pure hate and demons and humans killing each other, tanjiro was the only one to do and show something different. He was the only one that could cut off the hate and rage and killing, and remind them to the demons who they were, and save them by showing them that kindness and compassion andgave them that warmth, and like that, their souls go to a better place, feeling much better and getting back what they needed.
He just makes everything so much better for everyone,he shows so much comfort and support is crazy. He really is such a big brother figure and good example for every one of them, and everyone can see it
he is that little sunshine that everyone needs

    • @MaylenZayas-e7o
      @MaylenZayas-e7o 5 месяцев назад +1

And IMAGINE how pure you have to be to have suffered so much by your own,and still be SO selfless and still keep that warmth and kind in your heart, and the amount of mental strenght you must have. Many characters after they got awfully traumatized, their whole essence and personality changes, they get colder or rougher and meaner and much much more selfish, while tanjiro is still the same person as the day he was born. No matter how much he would have got hurt, his spark was incredible invencible. He's just as shiny and warm as the son,he's something impossible to not feel touched by eventually.
he means so so so much and he's,again, the perfect definition of what actual kindness means, and how strong he is. He means everything in this world and deserves so so so much,he's such a comfort for everyone that felt touched by him and love him as much as i do.
As an older sister,i feel pretty touched and in a kinda connection with him. Our need to just be there for em,show em the best of everything, show em that we're here for them cause that's what we do. That's what we try to do everyday. And i really wish i could be much more like him. He's everything i want for myself, and also want to be for the people around me.

I think understanding some cultural context in important to fully enjoy this show. I enjoyed it from the start because of the cultural and religious references that it had, but if you've ever been to the inaka of Japan, such as the town where Tanjiro is from, you see that his kindness reflects real Japanese-style hospitality. As opposed to the "nice" protagonists of other shows, he shows a real self-sacrificing kindness and generosity in small and big ways, and the way he does it is deeply rooted in the conflict-avoidant, social-duty-feeling hospitality of traditional Japanese culture.

tanjiro really is like the older brother i never had. my brother is great and i love him but we fight all the time and we cant go one day without insulting each other. He would constantly complain whenever told to do something and i honestly felt like we were the same age. (if not for me always getting blamed for our fights and the talent he had for always hurting me more during our physical fights) i just sometimes wish i could confide in my older brother more when i was upset, but we dont have that relationship. Its only just now becoming better.
