      That's fair, but you're always in competition with yourself and for me, that's much worse than I expected it to be. Perspective is definitely big though, I do like that!

    As a new runner, I really admire people who are able to run marathons. And you finished yours despite feeling sick so be proud of yourself. A lot of people would have quit.

      We're all at different points in our journey. Just a year ago, I wasn't able to do a full marathon and completed a half. You will get there!

    finishing a marathon is an achievement in itself, especially if you were feeling a bit ill. Even then, 3:38 is a great time - although it wasn’t your goal, it was also your first marathon and you were sick! it’s okay to have an excuse once a while and this one was very valid!

      Yeah, definitely a lot of learning lessons and it being my first, I didn't have much of an idea of what to expect. I don't like excuses though haha but I appreciate you!

    One of the things I have learned is that no matter how great training goes, you never know how race day will go. 3:38 is a great time considering how you were feeling and that you just started using gels. Think of this marathon as setting your baseline. I am sure you will see the improvement on the next one you do. Good Luck.

      Yeah, I think it's a fairly easy baseline for sure as I assumed my baseline was going to be 3:30. It is true that you never know what's going to happen come race day. Thank you, you as well!

    I ran my first a few days ago and finished 8 min past my 3:40 goal. When experienced people warn you the marathon is no joke, believe them. Lesson, when people who have experience you don't, believe them and don't mistake yourself for superman, who is a fictional character.

    you killed it man! i wouldn’t run anything longer than 20 in practice… i think it will destroy your body too much and interfere with your training. when you are in shape and cruising through 7:20 miles … that marathon will be over before you know it. tbh they are always tough, there is no “getting used to”

      You couldn’t run sub 3 for the marathon if you ran 3.39. That is light years away. Not being bad, you are kidding yourself to even think that.

    You did awesome!! You will learn as you go. Really 20miles will be the longest run you should have during training..most plans show this... Recovery after long runs are important.. epsom salt baths! .

      The longest I’ve done in a training session was 16 miles and oof tough. Took me a day to recover!

    Lol I was trying to get 4:50 for my first and ended up getting 6:31. Talk about a bad first marathon experience? Talk about mine. You did very well man!

      @@TylerSinden Some things you just can't explain or rationalize man. All I know is at some point my body failed me and my pace just kept dropping with every 10K mark lol. I know the frustration. But I'm over it now. I'm also dropping a video about it tomorrow on my channel

    Ran My First UltraMarathon last weekend did a 50k Trail Ultra. I was hoping to finish under 6 1/2 hours and I missed it by 3 mins tough, but also lets me know that it's definitely possible for me maybe better fueling more water would've helped me get there. Also, my first time running over 15 miles, let alone getting to that 15 mile check point and having 16 more miles to go! That last 10 miles felt like an eternity but I just kept pushing; the last 5k I needed to walk most of it! You'll be good and bounce back very impressive goals for your first marathon!

      Aw man, 3 minutes off sucks with how close you were. Congrats on your first ultra! These failures only act as learning lessons for us to better prepare next time and come back stronger! Sounds like a tough finish though and I definitely will bounce back, thank you!

    Well done. Great effort for first marathon. The only advice I would give is to train as you are going to run. Don't try something new for the race. Practice using gels etc during training so no surprises during the race.

    Yeah. Nice work! Don't let it get you down. Your first marathon is prep for the rest you will do. You'll make so many stupid mistakes no matter how prepared you think you are. 3:30 is really ambitious and you got close. You're definitely on track. A practice marathon is definitely good. Don't let people scare you into not doing it. I would keep it at least 3 weeks out though maybe 4. Doing it too early in the training block isn't as useful. I'm shooting for 3:00 next year, so definitely not elite, but I've done maybe 25 marathons now.

      I appreciate all that man! I wouldn't do it close to an actual race day, might do it sometime during this Ironman training, but at the same time, wouldn't want to risk an injury. That's awesome man! Best of luck. I want to get there eventually and qualify for the Boston Marathon.

      thank you! Yeah, talking with people in the bike community, they barely train for stuff and are able to go out and perform because their endurance has been building for so long.

      100%. Learned a lot from this and I found a 16 week program to run sub 3:30 online and started it about 6 weeks in as I signed up for this about 2.5 months out. Thank you though!

    I just saw this. Sorry for the logistic issues that surely affected your race since sleep night before is always bad - and you had two of them (tho waking up on wrong day was a first 😂).

    Last summer I tore my Achilles at 37, this May I decided to go couch to marathon in 5 months and did the kc marathon last Saturday. It was all good until mile 19. The last 7 miles were pure hell but I finished it. Will definitely keep training for about a year before doing another. It wasn’t enough time to run a good race

      Love that you just threw yourself in it and got the job done! I almost did that recently with my second marathon, but decided not to due to my injury from this marathon still lingering.
      I would have just been doing it to do it and not running a good pace like you're aiming for with your next. Good luck with the training and your next marathon!

      your issue isn't with the distance but with fueling your body properly before and during the race if you're hitting a "wall"

      People also train for ultras and run +30 miles in training, so I would say go ahead you know your body and what it can handle.

    Interesting how relatively low your HR was during the whole race yet you felt like it was hard. Maybe your watch isn't tracking it properly? Watches aren't as accurate as chest or arm strap, but this seems way off. It seemed you were in easy zone the whole way?

      Nah, it never tracked for about 18ish miles and it really annoyed me. I would guess that I was around the 150-160 heart rate zone.

    Man I did 4:57. I would have loved to have your time. I get it though. I missed my target by 27 minutes. For a first time I just wanted to survive and I did.

      Yeah, we're all at different levels. I was also trying to just survive as well haha I wanted to make sure my heart wasn't too elevated but my watch wasn't tracking which annoyed me. That's really awesome to hear though! Congrats on finishing your first and hopefully more to come! 🚀

    2:28 for first with a 1:12 closing half. Handicap race ran from backmark to take win. No social media, no you tube documentary just run based triathlon training around a labouring job.
    Ran 45km 4 weeks prior as an accident as just did 3hr run.
    Back up again two weeks later ran a 2:42 and then two weeks after that a 2:32.

    I just tripped over your video and was about to blast you for not knowing the proper date for your marathon but after a very respectable finish time ill change my angle 》 why have you not informed your audience of any of your training schedule? Have I missed something? Just curious how you achieved your time that is all.

      lmao blast me, I'm dumb for that 😂 Felt like an idiot when I was down there ready to run.
      I just started getting back into RUclips and posting. I'm currently training for an Ironman and trying to document the journey and thought the marathon would be a good addition. I can definitely do a video on that once I get back to full health!
      I believe one reason why I ran a half-decent time is because of my body and have always been in sports. Running has never really been that hard for me, I just never enjoyed it before.

    Training to run marathon on a low carb diet is like trying to drive across the country with no gas, proper diet will massively increase the benefits you get from training

      My goal wasn't to finish, I knew that I was able to finish. I wanted to hit my goal times and I get that, I'm just someone that's not a fan of excuses, and I'm hard on myself.

    Do NOT run a full marathon in training - that is long-held standard advice. You will be more prone to injury, you will need a long recovery time which will impact your training schedule for the next two weeks, and you will get burnt out. NO respect for you, training wrong and not even smart enough to get the correct day. Thumbs down. I have done 29 marathons and was always smart enough to show up on the correct day.

    Why on earth would you eat low carb while marathon training ? Carb is the main energy source your body taps in to. Get yourself more informed and it will be so much better

      If you done well on low carb you will do much better on carbs.
      You are no wizard or alien, it's science.
      That's why I said, get informed, look in to it. You will benefit tremendously
