    At the age of 43 I decided to train for my first marathon. I wasn't a runner but I wanted to do something I didn't think I could do. I started training 5 months before the race. I had some ups and definitely some downs. I DID IT! I accomplished my goal. Probably the single most difficult task I have accomplished in my life. I documented the whole experience. I shared my story.
    After running this marathon in Dallas, I set out to try to get into the New York City Marathon. You have to either qualify or be picked for the lottery which is nearly impossible to get in. I was fortunate to gain a spot of a few lucky ones that will pledge to raise money for a charity.
    My spot is secured and I will train and document my next journey for this race. This will be an epic race and I am looking forward to being a part of it!
    Subscribe to follow the journey and keep me accountable along the way.

    This Monday I begin my climb to the summit with a Memorial Day 5K. I see this was made a couple of years ago. Today, the pandemic is subsiding and real races are back. I'm not sure if I will make it to the full marathon. Back in 2016, I ran a half marathon. I was so proud. 3 days later I pulled a muscle and quit running until 3 months ago. I'm 64 now, never married, no kids. The question is can I find enough compelling reasons to run a marathon. For me it is not that I don't think I can do it, it is finding the reason to do it. Wish me luck.

    Chris, this is a really nice video. I accomplished my first marathon (at 52) in April 2018 and while that was something that was not easy in the end I really enjoyed it. As you also stated in this video one of the toughest things about the marathon is the training part. I tried to follow the plan but sometimes I hated it. The thing that kept me going was the goal that was set, I entered the Rotterdam Marathon, I paid for it and told a lot of people. So there was more or less no way to back out.
    April 6, 2019, will be my second marathon but my final goal will be the NYC marathon, probably 2020.
    Good luck with the preparation for New York, if keep training like you did you will finish that one as well.
    Regards from the Netherlands,
    Martin

      The genuine best advice I can give... dont worry too much about trying to get everything right. Consistency trumps all. It's ok to take rest days or miss the odd day but the most important thing is to get out and and run. There will be many days you wont feel like running, Just put your shorts or shoes on, take that 1st step then you will be out the door. Keep doing this and you will end up going out running consistently and then magic things will happen

    Going from 0 running to running a marathon in 5 months is as brave as it is stupid.
    Actually it's much more stupid than brave.
    Be smart, train smart, build up your endurance and get adaptations required to handle high volume training with consistent running for at least 20-30 months and then you can start thinking about preparing a marathon.

    • @ChrisSwanzy
      @ChrisSwanzy  4 года назад +1

      I suppose you can call me stupid then. Trained 4 days a week and accomplished my goal. Ran at my pace. Trained and learned endurance. Finished the race at my pace and did it. Ran 3 marathons and 1 half now. Best thing I ever did!

    • @StephenJReid

    • @mbengaful
      @mbengaful 4 года назад

      @@ChrisSwanzy And I'm glad that it worked fine for you, but still it's pretty damn risky. Running a marathon, or any race for that matter for us hobby joggers, must not the goal but the motivation to go out and train. The goal is being healthier and more comfortable under your skin.

    • @mbengaful
      @mbengaful 4 года назад

      @@StephenJReid Allow me to disagree. You might finish it if you're tough enough but you won't be ready to do it safely.
      I'm just suggesting to set realistic goals and not rush things, we're in it, hopefully, for the long run.

    • @ChrisSwanzy
      @ChrisSwanzy  4 года назад +1

      I’m an all or nothing type. The only reason why I signed up for a marathon was for accountability. I knew I may not finish it but the goal was to get in shape. If I had a deadline I would stay consistent. Finishing was the icing on the cake. Then it got in my blood. I didn’t start the youtube videos to post about running to start. I did it for my own personal documenting. Then people started following and telling me that I was encouraging them to get out and do something. Many have changed their lives because of some of my videos and that is priceless. If at 5 months I was able to get 10 miles then I would have been just as satisfied. I think most know their own body and know why they can handle. At the beginning I thought there is no way. But I kept plugging along the right way. My first was nothing to boast about by any means. 5 hours 34 min. Slow as a turtle. But my last was under 4 1/2 hours. It’s been a process for sure.

    Awesome Chris - I am running a Trail marathon - 20 Km (12 miles) with elevation gain of 2100 feet. I've done it 3 times before but actually did some training for it this year. Two years ago I did it on my own - so that's the time to beat. I'm not normally a runner but with some commitment this year I have found I actually enjoy it and am dedicated to continuing running after the race. Cheers from Canada!

    Huge congrats Chris! What an achievement! I am currently preparing for my first marathon and just as you I give myself 5 month of training for it. I started the 1st of January and race day will be the 16th of May. Now that I am slowly building some fitness I start to believe that I will be able to somehow cross the finish line. I do wonder what I what a realistic, achievable finishing time would be for me though. Would you mind sharing yours as a reference?

    • @ChrisSwanzy
      @ChrisSwanzy  3 года назад +2

      Hello Cedric! Man I love reading these comments. Another great achievement is about to happen. You will finish. Don’t let your adrenaline speed up your pace. Let the first three miles get you in your groove. I finished my first in 5 hours and 34 min. Very slow but I finished! That was my goal. I didn’t know what to expect and my longest run before the marathon was 22 miles. Prep days ahead with your carb load. Replenish with gels every 45 to 60 min on your race. Don’t get behind on your fuel. Once you get behind, you won’t catch up. My second marathon was 4 hours and 45 min. The last marathon I ran in 4 hours 29 min. You will develop speed over time. I ran my first slow on purpose because I was afraid of hitting the wall before I finished. Take it easy and congrats! Please let me know how it goes. I’m here for any questions my friend! Take care. Stay healthy

The last pair of nose I had worked great. Maybe the first pair was just a fluke? Since then I bought the new AirPods and haven’t used the Bose since. I like the sound (not as good as Bose) but good enough. The trade off was the small case and battery life. I carry my AirPods in my pocket everyday and use them all the time. I recommend over the AirPods but Bose had some amazing sounds. Good luck. Let me know what you finally decide on and how well you like them. Take care!

      Hello Matt!!! These are my favorite comments to read. Great for you! Enjoy the journey man. The training will have more of a lasting impact than the race itself. The race is just the celebration of your hard work. There will be more harder days than easy ones. Keep your mental strong. You got this. Keep me posted on the journey. Warning. It can be addictive 😊

    Superb effort my friend. To achieve the seemingly unachievable is a sweet feeling indeed. Very well done. Many regards from England.
