A very nice game. At least for me it is easier to pick up and play than HoMM3. I've also found that I cannot do much better than the AI in combat so autobattles significantly speed up the gameplay. The composition of the army and the initial positioning are the key things.
How is the map randomizations and skirmish conditions? random loot, places, Keeps, characters? i'm not a campaign player anymore, i mostly sit down and play roguelikes and single skirmishes? Thanks in advance!
Map randomization follows certain "patterns" to choose from and generate random loot and places. The characters are fixed to their factions. There's also hand made maps, where the devs have a plenty available already AND there's community maps/campaigns as well. The campaign is very much more a extended tutorial with awesome story. They did a great job in slowly introducing the factions while telling their story. Usually I don't play story much anymore either, but this game has a very pleasant story mode.
From my (limited) experience with the early access builds map randomization works quite well. I feel it has some similarities to Heroes Hour if you played that game. I have found it works exceptionally well on my Steam Deck. I've been playing it before bed recently.
Everytime I tell myself I am not going to buy another game you drop a laid out tutorial that convinces me to update my steam library 😂
But this one is really something very special! =)

This was helpful in laying out what playing the game is like. I appreciate the flow.
