That's the HP of 1 unit in your stack. Basically when it runs down, one of the guys in the stack will die. Especially useful for high HP stacks to know when to retreat them and such.
It's easy to argue that they're early/mid-game units, or units that you keep around if you're going for a Faey-heavy army. Their bonuses don't usually make up for their comparatively mediocre essence generation and average everything else, especially later game when you can produce knights. But everyone has their own strategies...
