*Here's how to get the best visual quality out of this capture card, (ive spent a good few hours experimenting to find this out)*
Ok so I believe this capture card only outputs at a LIMITED REFERENCE RANGE (16-235), Which means on pc the image will be washed out, or darked out.
    *HOW I FIXED IT!:*
    - Put my xbox 360 "reference levels" display settings to STANDARD (limited)
    - Then in StreamLabs OBS, video capture device settings I set COLOUR RANGE= FULL
    - Then add colour correction filter to Video Capture device
    - Gamma= -0.07 / Contrast= +0.02 / Brightness= -0.01
Now the colour and brightness will be PERFECT! Now on your pc monitor the video capture card shows black=0 and white=255.
*No longer washed out 16-235 range. Now full 0-255 range.*
You can test if you wish by going to your in game video calibration settings for brightness, and take a screenshot and import to photoshop, the blacks = rgb 0, and the whites = rgb 255
here is the visual quality i get on Forza Motorsport (also stream is only at 3500kbps bit rate)
    www.twitch.tv/videos/712149036?t=00h02m08s
    *Update: just for a touch of extra brightness i now set the filter at:* - Gamma= -0.06 / Contrast= +0.01 / Brightness= -0.01

For the record, you can use multiple of these cards at once, however they have to each be on their own dedicated USB input (ie you can't put multiple on one USB 3.0 hub).
I was curious and they were only $27 so I thought why not? I was VERY excited to see that it works. I use two of them, with two Sony mirrorless cameras and an Elgato HD60 S+ for Resolume graphics, all going into OBS Studio.
There's no visable difference between the Elgato and the generic HDMI ones, and they all work at the same time. Simply fantastic.

I just bought it around $10, the updated version can support 4k input but outputs 1080p.
EDIT: found out that I bought it from a sale. :( the original price is $20
It can do 1080p60, 1080p30, 720p60 and 720p30... though the build quality is not that much to be expected for. But damn! The price really got me. The color, the sharpness the resolution.
EDIT: YES, it can input 4k BUT it can only output 1080p60 at maximum. At first, I can't use 1080p60 but restarting obs seems to work. I can now select 1080p60. Idkw..
EDIT: I just check it from amazon, but I can't find the exact item I bought. Maybe the price got a little bit higher since internet people knew about it.

I always wondered why the price of HDMI capture hasn't gone down after so many years. I mean HDMI is technically pretty old in the tech world and as we all know: The older something is, the easier and cheaper it is to produce. So I guess this was a long time coming.

      @wildwalkeruk 4 года назад +11

Several points I would like to raise here (please don't be offended, I am not trying to be a d!ck, just want to maybe bring your attention to a few things)
      1. HDMI has gone through many iterations, we are on HDMI 2.1, this supports HDR, 8K 120FPs etc etc.
      2. Every time you produce something, you pay a royalty. This gets expensive (this is partly why HP etc invented Display port, to avoid royalties)
      3. Yes, hardware costs come down, but the software that is developed costs way more, and this development cost has to be recuperated.
      4. CODEC support generally has associated licensing costs also, codec's are generally not free.
There are probably other reasons that i have not considered, but the HDMI element is a very small part of the product. Yes I would love an elgato style product for $30, but I think I might have to wait :)

    Great video.
I’m looking into this for live streaming over obs with my Sony a6000.
I have some questions I was hoping you could help me with
    1) do you have any suggestions on where’s best to get a cant link which has the low latency like ur version? Or it’s not really seller specific.
    2) our goal is to live stream our music concerts from home. I have a Sony a6000 and video lens. And I’m concerned with the mjpeg compression being that the can’t stream only streams in compress mjpeg, how much is that downgrading my cameras quality
would an iPhone X hooked up directly over usb to a pc, stream higher quality video, than a Sony a6000 with a good video lens, which is being downgraded to mjpeg through the can’t link?
Thanks again for your in depth videos. Awesome !

A heads-up regarding something never mentioned in all the reviews I've seen; all these cheap capture cards output at a fixed framerate, 30 or 60, whereas a Cam Link can sync with the input framerate. If you happen to want to capture 24 (23.976) or 25 fps, the output of the former will suffer from motion judder (and conversion back to 24/25fps in an editor will not correct it, in fact probably _worsen_ it ). For streamers and game-play capture it's moot, but if you're capturing (and editing) from a 24/25fps camera to create TV/broadcast compatible material you'll need the Elgato or something similar. Also, the cheap cards all output mono audio, the Elgato will pass-through PCM stereo (and likely keep it in sync within a frame or two, which makes life that bit easier for editing).

When you say: “with a raw access to the feed it can have even more of a preview latency”, what exactly do you mean?

    • @cryora
      @cryora 4 года назад

He actually said "to a more raw access to the feed it can an even lower preview latency".
Maybe he means OBS has some processing that it does to the feed before sending it to the preview. Things I can think of are color filtering, overlays, converting the resolution and FPS values, downscale filtering. Or maybe since OBS has all of these other features, it's running tasks alongside feeding the video, such as recording/streaming and audio mixing, that may contribute to increasing the latency in the preview. I don't know if any of this is true, as I don't know how OBS works precisely.
Perhaps a more raw feed would mean whatever signal you get from the capture card, you feed it straight to a monitor without doing anything to it. I don't know what programs can do this though.

@@FloppySwordGaming I've been using it to play my PS5 on my PC (I know silly but I just wanted to be able to be on discord and play it like it was a PC game) and for me it worked great. Gameplay is smooth and flawless and 0 latency that I could notice. I haven't tried playing online games, mainly single players, but so far it's the same experience as using a TV in terms of latency.
      Hope this helps!

You seem to have a generation 1 capture card, which is explained by the color bars with no input. What do you mean, "cannot connect to tv"? I've never seen that error from my switch and it's worked fine with all three generations of these capture cards. Can you specify a bit?

You said you managed to play through the preview only through OBS. I tried this and I have a ~500ms audio delay from the video (video has basically no delay like you mentioned, but audio comes late). The way to fix it for stream is to set a simple manual video delay, but then it becomes unplayable from preview and I'd need a hdmi splitter.
Did you have any audio/video delay? How did you fix it?

yes. I've run into a slightly different issue. I bought 4 of them and hooked up (or tried) 4 HDMI cameras to this thing. It didn't want to play above 2 - as in I could plug it in, OBS recognised it, but I couldn't get the feeds simultaneously. Best I could do was get max 2 streams in OBS at any one time and when I'd get the 3rd stream working, one of the other 2 would stop working. Was very frustrating. I've settled for 2 HDMI and some other video source for now. Also I'm not sure I'm even getting 30fps but it could be a bottleneck from running 2 of them via USB 3.0 - not sure.

I bought the same capture card. I'm using a 5yr old i3 laptop and Sony a5100. It worked but only for 720p 30 fps. Frames were dropped when using 1080p 30fps, video was downgraded to 10 fps, with significant latency. Unusable for OBS. I then bought another no-name capture card, around $60, but this was 4K and 3.0 USB. The 1080p 30fps worked with "forgivable" latency--I'm using this to make videos for the classes I teach during the pandemic, so I hope they wouldn't mind the slight delay.
