I unironically think this is their greatest record. More riffs per square inch than anything else they did, and I think Dime's best solos are on this album. Phil never sounded better. It's just perfect and suffers from people clowning on it because it doesn't match the later Pantera persona. It's a piece of art.

I live in Houston and one summer night in 1989 my friend and I walked into Backstage off I-59 not knowing what band was playing. We walked in right while Pantera was killing it and we had a brains melted. From that night to about 14 months later we saw them around 15 times between the two night stints they would play there every other month and going to Dallas a couple of times. This is all before Cowboys from Hell was released. What a great time this was. It shaped our lives. Live music and killer guitar playing is what I live for weather it’s metal, jazz, blues, classical whatever. Dime could have been at the top of music genre he had chosen. He went with badass metal and he ruled it. He difined music prodigy. What a senseless loss we all are stuck with. RIP my friend.

I have to admit, I have never been much of a Pantera fan... but the song DEATH TRAP (and that galloping opening riff from Hades... and that God-blessed SOLO!) just rips all kinds of late 1980s metal conventions to smithereens!!! "Queen of the Reich" meets Godzilla's testicles... on crack! Dime & Vinnie; we'll see you raising Hell in the afterlife, bros... and very, VERY nice remastering, slanderous! ;)

The song power metal is actually sort of Predicting what this band was about to do. Its one of the best early Pantera songs. That song mostly says exactly what they did for the next decade. They literally ran forever as long as they could.

Very Underrated Record, One of my favorite records of all time, Wasn't recognized much more it deserves to be, with the Help of Phil Anselmo they got more heavier and heavier because of his Heavy Metal Awra, I see this is the real Start where Pantera has Begun their Heavy Metal Sound before jumping into straight Groove Metal Trend. But hey its one of the classics that I've heard so far another masterpiece that I'II remember and some Speed/Heavy Metal/Glam Metal/and Thrash Metal here I guess Rock the World is straight Glam while the rest of the songs were Speed/Heavy Metal and Thrash Metal so great Hard Ride has a great solo as well amazing.

Anyone that thinks this is somehow not a top-notch, cutting edge, technical metal record for '88 needs to get their fucking ears cleaned!!! Fucking seriously!? Dime's guitar work here is like Downing and Tipton together on steroids!!! Yes, heavy Priest roots yet at the same time progressively light years beyond. His fretting is so spot-on - razor sharp - precision, it's inhumane! Dime was truly six string divinity.
    \
The band as a whole is so tight throughout they are like one singular machine with precision chugging groove down to the atomic level. Vin's drumming is masterfully on time like nuclear clockwork while Phil's voice is questionably the best metal vocals ever belted out in the entire universe, ever! Really listen how he picks up where Halford leaves off and takes it to the outer limits of what every other singer only wishes could ever come out of their little mouths!!! Phil is state-of-the-art here and I would dare anyone to say otherwise to his face. It would probably be the end of your own as you know it.
Get a fucking clue nay-saying people or just get the fuck outta here until you pull your heads out of your asses and clean all the shit out of your ear holes!!!

I love what Phil brought to the band, but I would've loved to hear him actually singing like this more. I don't know how, but if he could've found a way to incorporate the two styles it would've been amazing. But at any rate, Pantera was always amazing..early, middle and late.

      Formed 1981 ,
Metal magic (1983) , Project in the jungle (1984) , I am the night (1985), Power metal (1988)
People may being " wow " when CFH came out , but almost a decade of career , 4 albums and 5 nights a week .
Well you understand why , its their background .
That background that allowed to do the rest .
Though technically CFH is a 80's album too as it was on demo and mostly played live in 1988 .
Power metal was made in 1986 .
Pantera was signed on a Atco sub distribution , Gold moutain records ,
Phil came in , recorded his vocals , ready to be nationally released in 1987 .
But the label though the album was too heavy and then they finally waited for the end contract but benefitted of the distribution , and released Power metal again on their own metal magic records label in 1988
