  • Match and riot highlights. Celtic score a late winner, hoards of unwashed from both sides invade the pitch, leading to pitched battels between both sets of fans with the police struggling to cope ... the outcome ... an alcohol ban from matches in Scotland.

One set of fans invaded the pitch to celebrate the win (as was common in those days) and the other set invaded the pitch to attack them. It's not hard to see where the blame lay. But of course the Scottish media and football authorities blamed what they called "old firm fans". I've been following Scottish football for 60+ years and I've yet to meet an old firm fan.

George McCluskey was also underrated but that was what professionalism in Scottish football was like then, McGarvey, McGrain and McCluskey would be millionaires now as would be the two late greats Burns and Cooper. Strange old days and strange to think McGarvey is a carpenter and McCluskey a taxi driver now, just nuts to think about and wouldnae hear that now.

Celtic stitched player numbers on their shorts. The green fabric of the numbers would be almost invisible against the hoops. I think in the nineties, they put a white square on the back of the jersey so you could see their numbers. :)

I was at that game, 17 years old, it was a nightmare , fans at the top of the terracing chucking bottles and cans full of piss down below at the police and hitting folk lower down. Nutters running onto the park, grown men from my town fighting each other. Then back to Glasgow Central avoiding the extreme violence, dodging bottles and fists, knives and boots. The last thing was a brick though the train window going though Johnstone. That was the last game I ever went to in Glasgow.

Note the anti Celtic propaganda at 6:36 onwards from ITV / STV , where the camera is on loads of Celtic fans jumping up and down in party mode and joy at their team winning, while the biased commentator says ''look at these angry scenes on the terraces''
Wow, was it really hard for him to report what the cameras were actually showing. ''That Celtic fans were rightly celebrating with happiness and joy their team winning and that Rangers fans then rioted onto th pitch with rage, anger and jealousy as they were clearly bad losers , and hence the Rangers fans started the riot by attacking Celtic fans, to which Celtic fans responded back by trying to chase the Rangers fans back to their end. the bonus is, with the death of rangers, the sectarian aspect of our game is cut by 75%

With hte liquidation there won't be any Old Firm matches against each other for a while so the number of violent incidents will go down. This almost makes a good case for having any Old Firm cup final be at Ibrox or Parkhead, randomly drawn. Here the supporters are at equal strength and there is going to be a legitimate fight between two equal forces - at one of the clubs' stadia there would be an advantage and fights like this would be avoided.

Why aren't the Celtic players wearing numbers on their shirts?

reminds me of the 55 league title wins by rangers, and number 55 title was by over 100 points.
celtic lost their ten in a row and their ginger manager was fired.

Ah yes, when the rangers fans celebrated their first significant trophy/title by urinating and vomiting on all the statues in George square, fighting pitched battles with one another, throwing bottles and missiles at the police and generally creating mayhem in the centre of Glasgow in the middle of a pandemic.
Reminded me of their fans appearance on special edition of crime watch which was completely dedicated to the Manchester riots after ‘Rangers’ had lost to зенит санкт-петербург.

yes, im a celtic fan and im irish and a catholic too but that has nothing to do with football, i could easily be a rangers fan i have friends that are irish catholics and rangers fans who share the same political views as me, they are unrelated and i think that football and all sports should be a place where it is free from this, where people of different religions

Much as I can be biased towards Celtic, you know if there was no Old Firm, think of the talent that would increase the weight of Hearts, Hibs, Dundee Utd, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, Livingston, St Mirren, Dunfermline, Inverness. It would be more democratic. It's been laughable for 20 years now.

These days Archie tries to morally grandstand as an anti-Indy campaigner, frankly doesnae stand up. How does the moral grandstanding stack up now Archie? Eh? hats off to Celtic though. they earned the cup.
