Dark Types in Competitive Pokemon.

- Competitive Singles has seen many different Dark types throughout the years.
Dark had a strong start in Gen 2 with it's strong immunity to Psychic and powerful move Pursuit.
In Gen 6 when Knock Off was significantly buffed, and Steel types lost their Dark resistance, the power and prevalence of Dark types skyrocketed.
This is sane. Let's explore Dark types throughout the years.

I'm glad Magcargo got into the Horse Council before this biased and prejudiced decision against High Horsepower was enacted.
Spectrier is a fraud, he does not even know HHP!
I wonder if its removed retrospectively or if the decision applies only going forward.
I know, to me this ban seems to be targeted towards gliscor
I believe Krookodile has a fair claim at joining the horse council, due to its long snout and once standing on all 4 of its legs.
arguments for krookodile claim:
-has a long snout
-once walked on all 4s
arguments against krookodile claim:
-other animals also have long snouts and walk on all 4s, like crocodiles
-his name is literally crocodile with k
@@Matheuslinspicollo source on third and forth claims?
@@Matheuslinspicollo his french name is crocorible which starts with a c like "cheval" which is "horse" in french. The horse society doesn't have an official language yet but since linoone being an ally of the mudcargo alliance could mean french could take that place which would support krookodile's case as a horse
So that would give Sandile a claim to being a horse. And if Sandile is a horse and Krookodile is a horse, that opens the path to "once a , always a ". Does this mean that mean that all birds are dinosaurs and thus deserve dragon status? I wonder if such a situation could cause turmoil if multiple councils decide on different rules or conditions. Perhaps a new Pokemon war may be on the brink of happening and this is just the beginning
It is (likely) a cold blooded reptile which also hurts their chances.
Despite the risk of inviting a Diomedes, I think a decent working definition would be a quadruped that learns high horse power.
Can’t wait for the Alolan Muk section
I used a Minimize/curse/Knock off/Gunk shot Muk w/Black sludge back in the day during sun and moon to fantastic success on the ladder!
If High-Horsepower isn't enough to verify as a horse, then what is? This is a slippery slope for the Council.
why? having horse power does not make one a horse and that is because horse power is a unit of power. having 1 horsepower means you produce power equivalent to that of a single horse; so having high horsepower doesn't make you a horse it just means you generate an enormous amount of power, for example we can use Magcargo. in the Pokédex entry from Pokémon sapphire it is stated that Magcargo has a body temperature of 18000 degrees Fahrenheit this converts to 9982.2222 degrees Celsius. in the same entry it states that water is vaporized on contact and that raindrops turn to steam in an instant, a single raindrop has a weight of 0.034 grams and an instant is an infinitesimally small amount of time, the shortest time measured is 397x10^21; water at 25 degrees celsius has a specific heat capacity of 4.182 j/gC, the difference in temperature between the water and Magcargo is 9957 degrees celsius. using the equation Wdot=c*m*DeltaT/deltat where c is specific heat, Wdot is work/time, deltaT is Temperature change and m is the mass of the object and deltat is the change in time. putting everything together we find that the amount of watts used in that interaction is 3.57*10^21 which when converted to horse power we get 4.7815*10^18 horse power which by all definitions is high horsepower however that is still only the work done and it tells us nothing about whether he is or is not a horse.
be smarter don't fall for the obvious scam Magcargo has employed to sneak his way into the horse council. and don't just trust the council I believe Magcargo is working with horse to topple the horse council in an effort to create chaos in society.

Gen 1 was truly a dark time for dark types.
Turning off the light while I'm still using it... Truly these are dark times...
Psychics hidden as darktype. As they were able to take your pokemon lights out. Truly a devil - PSYCHopaths.
I sure do hope Iron Mugulis doesn't take advantage of this whole horse situation somehow
Don’t give him ideas.
It's using the horse council as a diversion from its nefarious schemes.

Krookodile is clearly just trying to claim horse beneighfits.
can't wait for the stellar types in competitive pokémon
I'm LOVING the debacle about the distribution of high horsepower, which is one of gen 8's decision that got me really confused
It’s so funny, I’ve been playing this browser roguelite called Pokerogue and they gave high horsepower to zigzagoon as an egg move. I have no actual clue if linoone naturally gets that move in mainline games, but I like to think the devs included it as a Jimothy nod of acceptance, welcoming Linoone to the Council.
My favorite dark type Pokémon is Pursuit and Knock off
Unaware vs Mold Breaker is just
"I negate your stat boosts!"
"I negate your negating!"
The best gen of dark types are definitely gen 1
Not a single dark type below OU. Gen 1 peak frfr
They were so good against the amazing Psychic types and fighting types are bad, truly an amazing type.
My favorite Gen 1 dark type is . Great design, great stats, interesting movepool, what more can you ask for folks.
@@georgewalter6576 There's also not a single one in OU or Ubers. They were so good they got banned out of the generation
Fellow enjoyers of the Jimothy Coolothy channel, let it be known that Stakataka is on his way to claim a spot on the horse council. He is just moving extremely slowly due to his base speed.
You ever think about how Gen 9 gave Tinted Lens to Lokix, a physical attacker with Dark STAB and Knock Off, which are already two of the easiest to spam moves and types in the entire franchise, and there's half a dozen other Dark types introduced in that same generation who are even better than it?

1 hour video of my favorite type. Thank you Jimothy Gaming & God Bless this ADV.
Hi Jim! Thanks for showcasing my family with this one :)
love your informative vids, they always make my mornings. This is insane.
I find it really funny that despite a lot of dark types having their stats dumped into attack, dark type was a special type prior to gen 3.
Making Dark Type deal Physical dmg would have made Ghost obsolete, they intentionally made it Special to avoid that. Of course the most obvious solution would be changing Ghost to Special so Dark can freely be Physical but for some reason (presumably compatibility with gen 1?) they couldn't do that
Every dark move in Gen 3 became a physical move in Gen 4. There's literally no reason it was special. They should have just flipped Ghost and Dark
@@user-sw8gb3fz8xit also kept the Eeveelutions all being special types consistent.
@@Begeru true although I doubt that was intentional, it was more of a coincidence. Umbreon was originally meant to be a poison type after all
@@user-sw8gb3fz8x ah I remember reading that. personally I have a theory that Poison was sometimes used as the placeholder for a Dark type because it’s like the original “evil”/villain type.
Why did the Alakazam stay in and use Psychic again against the Houndoom, is he stupid?
Obviously, Dark is weak to Psychic but Psychic missed twice
If this is a serious comment- probably a turn made specifically to show the immunity in the video
Missed the upload by an hour but we locking in for this one like always ❤
I would love to see a Series where we go through the History of an Attack Type and how it changed and formed itself throughout the Generations. I‘m specifically talking about the moves of said typing and not the Type itself. The reason is because we would give certain moves a spotlight that are very niche, such as the move „Powder“. Did it ever get used effectively? Would really love to see that sort of Series
I really enjoy your videos.

I finish every one of your videos I start, and that really means something in my book. Anyways, I think you're the greatest, and I hope you know it. Much love brother!
The Umbreon section was really interesting. You often talk about seemingly bad Pokémon being viable due to metagame factors, but here we have the converse.
The jugulis tirade is my fav thing to make the channel, wonderful
an entire video on the horse council would go hard
Glad to see that Iron Jugulis July is starting off strong!
I love how most of the high damage dark types moves can do are always caused by a gimmick or dependent on things outside of their control. You can tell they are the tricky type, also love how they don't have immunities and few resistances to their moves.
Umbreon in gen3ou set is overlooked. It has a lot of potential.
I loved using Grimmsnarl on gen 8 with Twave, SP, Taunt and Power Swap + Roseli berry. They never saw it coming.
I had no idea that iron jugulis was so perfect. What a hidden masterpiece.
Should we call it iron throat now to spread the word of its perfection?
Some of the most fun in early Gen 6 was running Mandibuzz because so many newer players didn't know how Foul Play worked (or that Mandibuzz ran it) and just got obliterated after setting up their SD on Scizor/Pinsir/Metagross/Charizard. Good times, good times.

Brute Bonnet is my favorite Dark Type Pokemon.
Dark truly is one of the best types, being good against imo the best type in ghost type both offensively and defensively is incredible.
Hey Jim, just wanted to let you know that your background music selection is top notch as always. If you happen to have a playlist, I'd love to give it a listen.
Jimothy tries to upload his videos at a reasonable hour challenge [IMPOSSIBLE]
The fact that ting-lu has higher base attack than Samurott-Hisui is mind boggling from a power creep pov
GF realized defensive mons with no offensive presence were bad
And yet wo chien exists
I love the dark type but the thing keeping it from being one of my favorite types is the lack of widely learned moves with 80 base power or more. Yes crunch and knock off are generally good, but they don't get spread around to just any mons, they need teeth and some kind of limb capable of smacking respectively. Dark pulse is a very accessible special option, but because dark and ghost are so similar offensively any non dark type would rather have shadow ball's special defense drop and neutrality on fighting types. Dark has the potential to be the third best type in the game after fairy and steel, and if a particularly strong dark move is given to a good amount of mons like pursuit, once was, I think that would do it
Lokix, my beloved
Excadrill has vowed to secure a spot on the horse council seeing as it learns High Horsepower
Drapion propably had either SD or whirlwind to actually beat Reunicles.
bc of the speed calculation in Gen 6 Mega Sableye even had Priority on its first turn from its baseform so i didnt need protect as it could priority Will-O or Calm Mind depending on the foe and still get the Magic Bounce up in time for any hazards or status moves.
Finally, no more horsing around
Really interesting video
I just missed ttar in gen 4 ubers, because it is a really common pokemon there
And also gen 8 ubers yveltal
Duck has been one of the strongest Pokemon types
I find cool that poison/dark makes you immune to psyshock which can be bad if u only have good spdef like amuk
I didn't know crits ignore defense boosts. Nice
to give a bit more insight about Roaring Moon; it fell to UU before the second DLC and was a bit weaker because it didnt have Knock Off back then.
Magcargo is kind of a dark type in the sense that no one seems to be able to see it exists
The thumbnail didn't load properly at first, which I thought was intentional haha, just a dark grey box, I was mildly amused.
jim, thank you for mentioning crawdaunt, it reminded me of my favourite tournament game ever (freezai vs Eo 2022 wcop) with the most legendary crawdaunt of all time. i've watched that damn game like 6 times and i still can't help getting hyped. also i will very happily talk about my hatred for kingambit, not only is it a braindead design, it basically takes the concept of priority and cranks the power level up so far beyond what was originally intended that it totally breaks the game, with the only counterplay being to use hard counters (that easily get f*cked by tera) or win coin flip style mindgames. raging bolt is similar i loathe that thing, those two are only balanced thanks to the broken checks broken shenanigans going on in the tier. im glad people are liking it now but it's too fundamentally flawed for me to enjoy it at all
Diamond and Pearl TRUELY made the Dark type good (finally). The Physical Sp. split and all of the new awesome moves and reworking of movesets, evolutions and abilities in Gen 4 was truely needed.
Iron Draco would’ve been such a fitting name for the new Hydreigon monstrosity
But it’s not a dragon
@@GravityIsFalling Ahh yes because that was so critical to their naming process, such as iron thorns the electric/rock type or iron moth the fire/poison type

1:11 "New Horse" Island = Mumbo's Mountain from Banjo Kazooie
Not sure if this would provide enough material, let alone be interesting enough, but I always thought it might be interesting for you to make a video about the physical/special split from Gen 4 onwards. While the advantages of the split are more apparent I feel like it also hurt the game in some aspects, especially the concept of mixed attackers and strictly physically/specially bulky pokemon.
At this point I click videos just for Horse council lore lol
Weaviles more of a revenge killer than a wall breaker
I will forever be confused why prior to the physical special split they made Ghost physical and Dark special when most Ghost types were special attackers and Dark types were physical attackers
I'm pretty sure that ghost was physical in gen 1 as it was meant to be an answer to psychic types, pokemon which are typically frail on physical defense (especially since special was a combined stat back in gen 1), and if you look at the concept art for pokemon that didn't make the cut it looks like there were supposed to be more ghost types. Then we move onto generation 2, there's already more physical types than special types so with introducing Steel and Dark type they probably wanted only one to be physical at most and even if you set aside moves like bite and crunch, steel logically makes sense to be 'physically' based while this new 'Evil' type is more special conceptually. From there it was probably just an unwillingness to change what was established until the physical/special split, because why change things for just one or two types when plenty of types have moves that should be physical or special.
@@shanoc5902 sure but then ghosts are designed to be special attackers, what’s the deal with that??

I think the Krook deserves to be an honorary horse 💪🐴👌
39:00 The wacky thing about Greninja-A is that it technically has more attack than Kyogre.
I’d wager that Krookodile is going to team up with Horsea to eliminate all non-horses from the horse council
Its weird that dark type is considered strong despite the complete lack of STAB nukes (no attack have more than 90 Base power except Hyperspace fury ). Utility over power I guess.
Tbf knock can be considered a STAB nuke, just not consistently due to the 1.5x multiplier only applying if the oppjent has a knockable item.
The iffensive presence if it is also great, with it having a great neutral matchup, lack of immunities, and most dark types having dangerous secondary stabs (see Gren, Weav, Gambit/Bisharp)
i think Pursuit is an Outstanding move in comp Pokemon, isnt?

Inspired by the comment section, I put forward, before the horse council, the claim that Iron Mugulis shall be considered a horse
No Darkrai in the Gen 9 section? This is outrageous.
Clearly the new rule was pushed through by Spectrier, looking to solidify their place in the council and prevent those who rightfully belong from claiming benefits.

Not much realated with the vid, but why urshifu single is banned but rapid strike isn't?
Dark fighting is just absurd, with Wicked Blow being incredibly spammable, and access to Poison Jab to hit the fairies. Rapid Strike is a bit more exploitable due to the multi hit nature of Surging Strikes, making it vulnerable to contact punishing abilities/items (i.e. Flame Body, Static, Rocky Helmet, Rough Skin) along with Water Fighting not being as absurd, especially when Pex was popular and stuff like Rillaboom/Dondozo stuffing it or water immunities lkke Ogerpon-W
