- Just nine miles west of Horseshoe Curve, Norfolk Southern reaches the summit of the Allegheny Mountains in the borough of Cresson, Pennsylvania. Sitting at an elevation of just over 2,000 feet above sea level, Cresson is home to a small rail park containing a Pennsylvania Railroad caboose, a shelter with picnic tables, a gazebo, and a viewing platform, making the rail park a fantastic place to watch the action on Norfolk Southern’s busy Pittsburgh Division. Besides watching trains from the rail park, railfans can watch live trains in Cresson around the clock on the RailStream webcam ( • RAILSTREAM LIVE! Cress... ) located at the Station Inn, just a few blocks from the rail park. In addition to the 60 or more Norfolk Southern freight trains that railfans can see each day in Cresson, Amtrak trains 42 and 43, The Pennsylvanian, pass Cresson during daylight hours each day. Additionally, the R.J. Corman Railroad interchanges with Norfolk Southern at Cresson right in front of the rail park. In this drone video, we explore the mainline section of track that passes the rail park in Cresson, along with the small Norfolk Southern servicing facility right across from the rail park. We also take a peek at some of the railroad equipment being stored behind the servicing facility.
This video was recorded using a DJI Mavic Pro drone, and the audio was recorded separately at ground level using a GoPro HERO Session.

Great video. I grew up in Cresson; many fond memories. Watched the steamers pull that grade when I was a kid
Very nice video, David! Good overall presentation, too. My son and I just spent a week at the Station Inn back in September. We visited the Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, the Juniata shops, and even took a day trip to Strasburg and the museum there. Had a great time!
I just purchased a UAS and your impressive aerial views have inspired me to also give this aspect of railfanning a try. Thanks for a great video!
Happy flying!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane @David Lauback. I grew up in Loretto, PA, the home of Saint Francis University. Was born there in 1956, and have been familiar with the sounds & sights of area trains throughout my lifetime. I now live in Freeport, PA, and have no choice but to have become an amerature Railroad & Train enthusiast since my property borders an old railroad depot and also has several trains running within 100 yards daily.
Nice video! I'm coming to Horseshoe Flag Day week. Thanks for the video!
I’ll be in Cumberland in a couple of weeks! Travelling on the Mallet, as I’m from Great Britain, Cresson will be on our TO DO LIST as we shall be continuing onto Reading for another steam trip with 2102
Good job. This is Tom Lieb commenting and most of my 40 years worked on the railroad - Penn Central/ConRail/Norfolk Southern - track department was spent at this headquarters here in Cresson. Nice to see it 'from the air'! Lots of memories stirred! Thanks, David Lauback.
I can almost see my moms childhood home at 8:10 The church is on her street.Powell Ave.My aunt still lives in the house. She just turned 101 yrs.old.
Very well done video David.Other RUclips videographers should learn from your post. Incredible aerial coverage, information put forth in a concise manner without the all-too-frequent presence of someone who likes to hear themselves speck. Very commendable.
Great Drone Footage and good explanations..!!
Nice went there once went thru the car tunnel
and missed the fueling yard entirely
after driving 2+ hrs out of my route
Nice to finally see
Thanks for dubbing the video with train sounds rather than elevator music, something others have done with their drone videos.
Wonderful video David...Cresson and Cassandra are two of my favorite photo stops, but not before stopping at Sheetz for 2 chili dogs,or Shop 'n Save for a wonderful sub...sure enjoy your videos.
Cool thanks mate
Don't forget that Cresson Steel place.
Good video.Looking forward to my trip up there for the N scale show in Altoona this fall
Cresson PA is my home town where I grew up. Love this video and makes me miss Cresson! I use to live in the apartment building right beside the tracks.
Great video!
Excellent! I've been railfanning in Cresson since 1974. If only drones had been around then.
I have often thought about how cool it would be if I could go back in time and film some of the old railroad days with a drone!
Went to college in Cresson. Could see my old place from your drone. Great town, hopefully you got somw Vitos while you were there!
Excellent video! And thank you for not playing some obnoxious music.
Many thanks for your video! I learned a lot about how and particularly where, much is done on the summit of the Pittsburgh division.
That Was Really COOL. I could watch trains like this all day. Amazing Drone work Sir
Nicely done!
Very interesting and informative! Great job 👍
Terrific catches/power/races/meets! Hopefully I can go there for a railfan trip in the future! Amazing narration!
Excellent video , great airmanship! THANKS
Good morning and THANK YOU for this post. When I go out that way during my annual summer day trip, this is one of my stops.
Nice one, great drone work.
Hi Dave. Kenny from Albuquerque New Mexico. Been there many times and stay with Tom at the Station Inn. You did a great job thank you. Both my Grandfathers worked for the PRR in Harrisburg PA and Enola PA. Our house was right next to the tracks at the Over View Bridge in Enola. This was 1943 to 1950. If you ever have a opportunity I'd love to see a drone view of Enola and Harrisburg. Thanks Kenny.
Thank you very much for uploading this David! NS is one of my favorite railroads out there, and seeing units like the big SD70ACUs operating is great!
Very nice video and what beautiful scenery in the surrounding area.
I stayed in Cresson last September. At the inn. I had many questions and you answered them. Great vid.
Great video
I would enjoy seeing where those other tracks go great video
Great job. Your informative video made me a subscriber. 👍👍👍👍
👇Great video..thank you ! 👍

Awesome video rail fan the curve on you tube all time
Awesome drone footage 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Great Video, Thanks for sharing. I never realized the trains switched tracks in the area you showed.
That’s why there are switches there.🧐
Beautiful Drone Video
🚂🚂🇮🇳
I spent a lot of time on the ground here, but never saw it the way you presented it. Very interesting. Thank you for a great video
Sir David !! THANKS as DRONE VIDEO is awesome !!! Don't know if its still there ,,but there was a Cresson Ridge restaurant on US22 that had a painting on the wall next to the ceiling of Horseshoe curve !!! Been many years since been up there since the completion on I-99 !! ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!
K B- Sadly the Cresson Ridge restaurant is just a vacant building as of two years ago.My aunt lives in Cresson and when I was a kid back in the early 1970's when PENN CENTRAL was still around,my dad would take us to that restaurant for a hamburger and a big glass of chocolate milk when we would visit from Michigan.Boy,I really miss those times.
@@zigman8550 Yepper !!! Days gone by !!! Thanks for your update !!!
What it beautiful layout! I love the way you do your videos because it’s hard to believe that these are not real full size trains - you are an amazing videographer 😁
Take a good look at the engine house that services the helpers; it will be shut down next weekend.
Very nice but...Cresson isn't the summit. Nearby Galltzin/Tunnel Hill is the actual summit.
Gallitzin is actually the summit of the mountains
Really nice video David. I shared this on facebook. hope you don't mind.
Not at all! Share away!
Great video just one thing the Pittsburgh line doesn't go all the way to Conway it stops at Pittsburgh and the Fort Wayne line goes to Conway and beyond
Yes I went to the Conway yard a couple times and saw some trains meets and a triple train race
David. Nice to see just what is around Cresson . But can I ask why you never ventured down the track past the Station Hotel, just for a look see ?.
Good question! I never thought to go check out what was down past the Station Inn. I'll have to do that next time!
Was there right before they closed MO tower
where I live, we call anything that short (2,000 feet) a hill.
You'll have to forgive me because I'm originally from Northwest Ohio where everything is completely flat! 😂
How many trains goes thru thre area? There’s not action in the fuel service area?
How many cars are on these trains ?
Looks like they really fix up the train watching area since i last visited
Kenny, I've only lived in the area for a couple of years, so I never got a chance to see what the park used to look like. When did you last visit? What did the park used to look like?
@@DavidLauback last time was 2011 I could be wrong , it looks different but that was 9 years ago
Why no Horse you Curve video?
Hi David. What is the grade at Horseshoe Curve I am curious?
Great question! I'm not exactly sure, but I believe that NS lists the overall grade of the Curve as 1.34% in their timetables. If anyone on here knows for sure, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
To be more specific, in the tunnels.
Other than that, amazing videography, And production quality.
How long has it been waiting for train there is it hours of waiting.
I would say that on average 2 or 3 trains come through per hour, although it varies. Sometimes it's busier and sometimes it's quieter.
@@DavidLauback ok thanks for the information.
Nor folk?
4 Al Gore's rhythm
thanks
Trains suck
Great video!
