Guess what? There's a kit for this formulation! Check it out at yellowbee.ca/collections/product-starter-kit/products/starter-kit-cold-process-shampoo-bar Get the core (non grocery store) ingredients for $23.52CAD (~$17.77USD) + add on any dyes, fragrances, or moulds you want (they're optional). My shampoo bars (including this) are often preserved with cosgard & phenoxyethanol & ethylxexylglycerine. I used new-to-me fragance, frangibani EO, which I adore! ❤

I love in Mississippi so I knew from the beginning it will take longer for my bars to cure. Just one question: Is the bar supposed to be grainy? If it is, then I'm doing it correctly. If not, more oil? or better mixing? Thanks! (My whole family loves the body butter!)

I made these, they are wonderful, my hair is so soft!!! Thank you. Is there anything I can add to make them more firm? Is there a way to make them cure quicker and not feel wet, I let them sit a week. Thank you for sharing
I'm so glad you're loving them, woohoo! Re: hardness... is there any chance you used SLSa from Amazon? So far, every single time someone has reported the bar stays soft, that's been the problem. You want to use LATHANOL® LAL SLSa (sold by DIY supply shops and linked in the free partner blog post).
Hello Marie, I absolutely love your channel and all that you do! Just one question. Can SCI noodles be added to this formulation without removing any of the SLSA? 😊
I followed your recipe minus coloring and fragrance. I ended up with a very dry crumbling product that I had difficulty putting into the molds. It was so hard, even though I pressed it into the mold it worked the shape of the silicone molds 😮
Is there any chance you used SLSa from Amazon, or used a different starch? That could throw off the wet/dry balance. Try incorporating a bit more water to get a workable dough :) Please read the free partner blog post for more info.
Hmm. I'd probably try swapping 0.25% of the rice flour for goat milk powder and see how that goes. My main concern here is spoilage; milk at room temperature is not known for its stability :)
Why you didn’t use SCI? And what’s the difference between SCI and SLSA? What type of coloring is best for this recipe?can I use geogard or germall plus instead?
I doubt you'd notice a massive difference since this is a wash-off product, but it's certainly an easy thing to experiment with :) I'd just recommend keeping things on the cheaper side since the oil will be going down the drain quite promptly. I recommend giving this awesome post on hair & oils a read: science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2013/06/oils-which-ones-soak-in-vs-coat-hair.html. Happy making!
Marie, I actually wound up changing the way that I make my solid shampoo bars because of you. With this new formula, how hard does the finished product become? The way that I’ve been doing it now for years is the cold process method, no heat involved for melting your SCI. They come out like bricks. This is the hardness that I need to achieve. Will this formula do that?
These bars are really hard, but I have learned through troubleshooting with a patron who used a cheaper Amazon SLSa that you can get a softer bar if you do that. I used LATHANOL® LAL POWDER from Stepan Company and that worked really well :) I'm so glad you're enjoying the cold process method for shampoo bars-I was 100% sold after trying it, too!
@@HumblebeeAndMe oh, yes, I will never go back to heating up and trying to melt the SCI noodles and get a big gloppy mess. No, thank you. OK, are usually get my powdered surfactants from reputable suppliers online, not from Amazon. Thank you for answering my question. I’m going to try this tomorrow.
Ugh. Another question...sorry. Can I dub essential oils for fragrance oils? I'm trying to make an Okra and Rosemary bar. I have my reasons lol. Thank you so much
Could I use coconut milk powder instead of the rice flour. Also could I try using vitamin e oil. Strawberry seed oil or Kukui (Candlenut) Nut Kernel Oil Organic. Is possible to combine two different oils

Nice video. I’ve tried all types of shampoo bars and they never work with my hair texture. They dry out my hair even the ones that are meant for dry hair, also I have thinning hair.
So I'm a baby diy . Lol I purchased slsa on Amazon and I was afraid to open the jar, expecting a tornado of dust and didn't even get a poof! Lol upon research I found out there is something called COURSE slsa powder. I followed your recipe but tweaked the water to a smaller quantity and the end product was perfect. I used a moon cake press to form the bars. Not sure if they're going to dry hard or not but I was wondering if u have any info or preferences for the slsa. I hope they dry hard. Its my first try. Thank you for all of your videos. They gave me the courage to fail at first but keep going❤
Welcome to the wonderful world of DIY 😄 ❤️ Brilliant work on tweaking the water amount to suit your larger grain SLSa-that's exactly what you needed to do in that situation :) I hope the Amazon SLSa behaves and your bars harden up beautifully for you! I believe most of the people who've had poor results with Amazon SLSa purchased a fine grain one (one person sent me a link and I bought some to check), so hopefully yours is different from the stuff that definitely doesn't work 🤞🏻 I usually use fine grain SLSa as it's much more widely available, and its smaller size makes it dissolve more readily, which is nice when formulating products like foaming bath salts, but coarse grain will definitely work in shampoo bars :) Happy making!

I made this bar on Sunday. I did exactly as it said, had all the same ingredients. It’s day 5 and my bar isn’t dry or much harder yet. I make everything from scratch at home. We use nothing from the store, but for something reason shampoo bars are my weak spot. Help?!
Hi Elizabeth! Did you, but any chance, use Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) from Amazon? That's been the culprit every time someone has made these bars and they haven't hardened up :/
Can someone tell me what the benefits of “sodium laurel sulfa acetate” are? All the information I get from my research says is bad for hair growth and can flog up pours on the scalp and face and skin (so all skin.) Please and thank you.
Excellent. 😊 Hi Marie. I was wondering is there a way to put additives on this formulation and how? Can i replace the rice powder lets say seaweed powder?
I love this simple formulation! But i do have a few questions. How do i add botanical herbs like hibiscus powder etc and other actives that can help with hair concerns like hair growth, dandruff etc ?
Hi! That ends up being an 'it depends' thing, depending on the particular ingredient, the format it takes, how much is required to be effective, etc. You'd generally be lowering the water, the rice flour, or the carrier oil to make room for it, but you may end up having to make other adjustments, and there are also considerations of compatibility. Hey Marie! I noticed in your blog post that you recommended we don’t substitute the rice flour I went to the store and they didn’t have rice flour so I grabbed coconut. Do you think with some modifications it will be okay to use the coconut flour?
Unfortunately no; coconut flour really isn't a flour. It's mostly protein and fat vs. mostly carby starchy stuff, and that will really mess with the formula :(
@@HumblebeeAndMe I did give it a try and your right. It did form but in the end just was really crumbly and grainy. The feeling in the hair wasn’t nice at all. The coconut flour did smell really good but since it’s strong scent it did take over the other added scent. It would definitely be nice in a face mask or a light exfoliating item
I did work on some versions of this formulation that used Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) instead, but found I preferred the Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) dough.
I've never made a shampoo (bar or otherwise) with SLS. I don't even own SLS! This formulation uses Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa), which is very different from SLS :)
I think you should be able to, but it will be hard to get it as fine as the stuff you can buy, and that change in particle size can definitely throw off the wet/dry balance of the dough. Be sure to pass it through a fine sieve to ensure you're getting rid of any big bits and do your best to get it as silky and fine as cornstarch :)
You could try replacing a small %, but I wouldn't replace all of it. Start with 0.5-1%; even less if the aloe powder is concentrated at all. Happy making!
How long do they stay hard and solid and not get/ before going all mushy after a while, I noticed that lush bars don't get too mushy but every time I have tried to make my own shampoo bars they turn into paste after a while! I am wondering if this is just par for the course?

What about a solid shampoo & conditioner bar for our fur babies? I have been searching for something for mine, but not much is out there.
There's no reason you couldn't use this on a dog; I'd just drop the fragrance :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe wonderful. Thank you 😊
Do you have a pourable shampoo bar recipe?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) - does this make scalp dry and itchy?
Thank you so much Marie! Is Essental Oil a go or no for scenting? Thanks!
You can use an EO :) There are some helpful links in the free partner blog post!
Quick question. Can you use silicone molds or does it have to be the vacuum mold like the kind you used in the video
Hey Marie! I noticed in your blog post that you recommended we don’t substitute the rice flour
I went to the store and they didn’t have rice flour so I grabbed coconut.
SLSa can be very irritating for one's scalp. I know, it is for me. Why not use SCI instead?
I did work on some versions of this formulation that used Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) instead, but found I preferred the Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) dough.
Do I need to add preservative to make the soap last longer?
This formulation includes a preservative for exactly that reason :)
Please tell us about surfactants and surfactant blend and a detailed formulation, by using those surfactants
Love the video! I have a question, do you have a recipe that does not use SLS? Thank you!
I've never made a shampoo (bar or otherwise) with SLS. I don't even own SLS! This formulation uses Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa), which is very different from SLS :)
How do you weigh .6 of a gram? What scale do you have
Where can I find the plastic mold and the respirator? The SLSA
I love your shampoo & conditioner bar recipes! Can I swap Kaolin clay or oatmeal for the rice starch? Thank you!
That'll be the same answer as discussed at 06:43 :) Happy making!
@@HumblebeeAndMe thank you.
Thank you for a great video as usual😊. . Question, can i blend my own rice as rice powder?
I think you should be able to, but it will be hard to get it as fine as the stuff you can buy, and that change in particle size can definitely throw off the wet/dry balance of the dough. Be sure to pass it through a fine sieve to ensure you're getting rid of any big bits and do your best to get it as silky and fine as cornstarch :)
@HumblebeeAndMe thank you so much for your quick response. I will try 😊
Is SCI more drying than SLSA?
Could we use another preservative like germall plus?
how long to dry before you can un mold?
What type of blue dye
Mary thanks very much for this recipy I just love it
My pleasure 😊 Thanks for watching!
Hello, what hair type is this formulation for?
Hi I love this recipe.
Please tell me should I replace sodium lauryl sulfocatate SLSA into SCI sodium isotheanate
Hi! This is answered in the "sub" section of the video, and is also addressed in the free partner blog post :)
Look like theres no curing time for this ?
Can I use germall plus
Can we replace rice flour with aloe vera powder or brahmi powder
You could try replacing a small %, but I wouldn't replace all of it. Start with 0.5-1%; even less if the aloe powder is concentrated at all. Happy making!
How long do they stay hard and solid and not get/ before going all mushy after a while, I noticed that lush bars don't get too mushy but every time I have tried to make my own shampoo bars they turn into paste after a while! I am wondering if this is just par for the course?
Is there anything to switch out the slsa? I have a hard time with petroleum products.
Hi how u!! Great formulation must say ..but can we use goat milk soap base instead of sls ..plz reply
No, you definitely cannot. Also, this isn't SLS! Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) is very different from SLS. Thanks for watching!
What is proper Active Surfactant Matter for a shampoo bar? Any input is appreciated. Thanks
Can I get the website to all the ingredients that you listed to make this shampoo
Hey! I link to all the ingredients I use directly in the free partner blog posts for formulations that use them, so that's where you should look first. If those links aren't applicable for your country, please check out my massive list of places to shop all over the world (humblebeeandme.com/resources).
Happy making!
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! ❤️
Hello Marie! I've learned so much from your website, videos, and book, thank you! I was wondering if it is OK for me to sell the things I create using your recipes at my Crafter's Market stand. Is there a trademark or copyright on this recipe, or others? Thanks!
Hello! If you do, I ask two things :)
1) As I freely share in the spirit of helping people like you learn how to make things, I ask that you credit me for the formulation on your packaging and website. If your potential customers want to make it for themselves-just like you did-they should be able to (they probably won't lol).
2) Please become a paying Patron. Since my business is helping your business exist + profit, please support my business ❤️

Can this be used as a regular soap bar?
Definitely :)
