It is called depression glass because it was often included inside packages of Quaker Oats or other products during the depression of the 1930’s. Women got a free, pretty dish with each purchase and could build a nice set of dishes. These were usually pressed glass pieces in many shapes and colors. They were not meant to be fine dishware but much of it has lasted for nearly 90 years. This is because there was so much of it and because it went out of fashion, so people, like your mom, just stored it away and forgot it. I don’t think it is valuable but it is collectible. Some rare patterns or pieces may have value. If it is uranium glass, the kind that glows under black light, then it is highly collectible.
Some patterns and colors are still manufactured today. It is not all old. Read the article on Wikipedia.
Thanks for helping your mom. It’s wonderful to see you two sharing a task and laughing together.

I had some from my grandmother and just pieces of different colors. Took to an antique store and not worth much money. There was some with a tiny chip and I was told to put in garage sale for a couple of dollars. So you might go to an antique store and see what they will give you. People are always searching for pieces to make a set.

I was told they also gave a piece away at the movies. Don’t know if this was true or not, but my mom or grandma told me this.

Depending on the piece, they can be very valuable. My mother collects pink Depression glass and some of her pieces are upwards of $100-200 per piece due to their rarity.

It’s so easy to just keep everything. I m 68 and I recently went through a remodel of my home, I got new flooring so every room in the house was a touched. I sold about 80-100 items, give away about 6 bins of stuff and took stuff to a local donation center. It feels so good to have empty draws and cabinets

We did the same thing (total remodel) over five years ago. We got rid of so much and haven’t missed a thing. In fact, I’m still finding items to get rid of now. Decluttering is never-ending. It feels so good. I would guess we’ve had VietNam Vets pick up 5-6 + bags/boxes over 15 times.

Idea for your Mom's sea glass collection: maybe for her next birthday or Christmas, you could buy her a pair of matching side table lamps that have an empty glass cylinder for a base (some people fill them with seashells) and fill them with her sea glass collection. If they are too small, buy her four instead of two. Then she could get rid of some outdated lamps and replace them with pretty new seaglass lamps! 🟦🟢🟪🟡

That’s such a lovely idea. You see them every day then and they’re not hidden away. I had some beautiful pebbles I’d collected and I made a little water feature in my garden right by my window where I sit so I can see them. It’s much better they’re on display than hidden away.😊

Hello. I just found your channel this morning and really enjoyed this. How sweet of you to help your parents that way. I am at 77 year old grandmother from South Texas coast near Houston. I have been going through my house and decluttering for several years. When my mom passed away it was horrendous what we had to go through and also heartbreaking to get rid of The things she cherished but we could not keep. I want to spare my children this. On September 1 I started doing the five minute Declutter with clutter bug. This is so great. It’s so easy just to do five minutes and get rid of five things and it sure makes such a difference. I’m looking forward to watching your videos now that I have subscribed. Love in Christ

I watch videos like this before I go and tackle decluttering a similar area. Gets me in the right frame of mind, gives me an outline structure and also, it makes me feel I'm doing this in company. I'm recently widowed in a big 4-bedroom house that we owned for the last 26 years. It's just me and the cats here now so I'm intending to move within the next year or two and the sooner I get going on the clearing out the better. Every trash bag that leaves the house is a win!

I would love to buy some sea glass from her because I am wanting to start learning how to wire wrap some pieces into a necklace. My husband has cancer so I’m trying to find a new hobby or two to give me something to focus on in the next year. If she had special pieces, I’d be glad to make her something from it and send it to her. I also LOVE that you are doing this with YOUR MOTHER. What a blessing! My brother passed away in 2021, and as my sisters and I were emptying out his house, we laughed and cried over pieces and things we remembered, but there was so much we hadn’t seen before. We would have loved if he had been there to help with memories, or tell us new stories some of the pieces. Healing blessings to your Mom! She raised a wonderful daughter!

Yes, that clear glassware is depression glass and some of it can be worth quite a bit. You need to do some research and then determine if you want to try and sell it or just get rid of it or keep it. My sister-in-law had three different colors. She had cobalt blue set, the green set and the pink set when she passed away all three of her granddaughters took color. I think it’s extremely sweet of you helping your mom sometimes they can get so bad it’s just overwhelming. I start going through my stuff years ago, and I still have too much stuff, have fun make memories and your mom, and you reap the benefits

I do like to thrift . So if i get things I am always declutter things . we recently had to clean out my father n laws house when he had to go into hospice and there was so much stuff in his home and it was tiring. Only thing now people keep giving me stuff to put out so kinda becoming a thing...lol....and like you said, sometimes things are too cute to let go of so I gain some items as well. Catherine, I think this is the first video of yours I have ever watched, and I enjoyed it immensely. And the befores and afters are so inspiring! But the best part was the easy, loving rapport between you and your mom. Wow!

If your mom owns potted plants: put the seaglass on top of the dirt. Plants will not dry out so fast and the dirt will not spill over when watered. And its decorative. Love your video and will be now a new follower. Lovely greetings from Vienna (Austria), Sabine 😀

I have been decluttering for years. Everybody has always asked me to do their homes and I have now it’s like a thing. Well good for your mom because she never hesitated. She just went for your lucky my mother and she was alive. Wouldn’t get rid of everything and we were stuck doing it when she passed away, my rule is I go through all added dates in the fridge freezer etc. once a month just quickly in the pantry I go through like once a month and the medicine cabinet also. And if I haven’t worn something in a year it gets donated.
